  • REMINISCENCE OF HAINAN
We have often heard from our grandparents and older generations that overseas Chinese people migrated to Thailand “penniless, with only a mat and a pillow”. At that time, they were pure Chinese…but after getting married to Thai people, their mixed-blood descendants have grown up in a Thai environment which makes them “fluent in the Thai language and very much accustomed to Thai culture”. In just a few generations, they have become “authentic Thais”. Having migrated “without a penny to their names”, they have worked hard from the first day of settlement to gain wealth and possessions. Nowadays, they have become “successful Chinese Thais” who own businesses…all over Thailand.
About 5 million of the Thai population have Chinese roots, which is “the largest overseas Chinese community in the world”. The majority is the Han Chinese who migrated from Guangdong, China.
The sound of firecrackers during the Lunar New Year and the smell of incense on Yaowarat Road are “clear evidence” of our “very close relationship” with Chinese culture. Wherever Chinese people move to, “they never forget the place…they are from”. When they get a chance, they don’t hesitate to go back… like Mr. Wiroj Rojanasinghsawas who has “come back…to his hometown”
