Really nice video! I haven't painted in over ten years but i used to collect ultramarines back on the day! I managed to build up two companies of marines! I painted the second and third companies and I remember the shoulder tri
@Mancinta lol ok. Probably the fantastic light a photo box creates.. dunno. You don't see video of the model after the matte coat and that's really what makes the model FINISHED. Smooth as butter!
@pierrespringuel I don't have GW paint anymore. But when I did I put them all in reaper dropper bottles to get accurate measurements. Now I use all Vallejo Paints.
I am in paint training season and the theme is Space Marines. I plan in the future to hit all races but for now all you will see in SM. have 90 ish models that were donated so ALL will be painted to the 90+ chapters requested. I might need a break from them so you never know what I may thow in :)
@ragiskel I assume you mean the right shoulder insignia. On tactical squads it's usually the standard but every chapter and squad have various markings to show what type they belong to.
Nice, getting a pair ASAP! Thanks. I must admit, I haven't watched for a while now, when did you change the format - the videos are excellent quality ... and your views have sky-rocketed! Congratulations ...
@RubbishInRubbishOut Thanks Viv! I actually look over the camera with a jewelers visor that magnifies 2.5x. Helps a lot since the camera is in the way :)
@EnteruserIDhere1 Thanks! The chapter symbol is a decal. You don't have to like the technique but I'm glad you like the overall finish. It's really about what you like and how you get it done. BTW I read you other comments about not knowing what wash was, then making comments about the negatives of washes (costs etc.) so I'm confused. Using washes is just a technique and many painters in 40k use it since it was introduced by GW.
Do you find that the visors distort your depth perception? It doesn't seem so, that brush control is incredible! I've found that happens to me when using various styles of lenses.
I personally use "Brush Shaper/Restoration from "Mona Lisa Art Products". It comes in a small jar and you just coat the brush in it wipe it on a paper towel and shape it back to a point while wiping it works great!
@steadyeddie235 I didn't have a lot of money when I started the channel so I asked people from a forum I went to all the time if they were interested in donating minis for some tutorials that I would send back to them when done. I have plenty of devotion, considering it takes about 4 hours to make each video I put up.
outstanding video my brother! You are truly talented and inspiring to us fellow painters or hobbyists. Disregard the idiots with the stupid comments or dumb questions. Your videos and instructions are straight forward and simple. Any chance of a Grey Knight tutorial? Or perhaps a turorial on how you do non metal metallic? Keep up the good work!
@RubbishInRubbishOut No distortion because you have a lens for each eye. Single lens will do that to you. I went to the visor because my eyes would ache after about 6 hours. I would go smoke and focusing my eyes on anything more than 12 inches in front of me wasn't happening. It's a nice tool to have to get brush control down and save your eyes at the same time.
Have the model designs changed in the past 7 years? I rememper I have to cut off the handles on the guns just to glue them onto the hands of my marines. Looks like they made inserts on the arms for hands already holding weapons.
great work dude! two questions though what primer do you use and what did you use to hold the bolter up when you painted it. It looked like a stick glued to it but that can't be right.
holy shit Les .. i'm fucking amazed man! totally ... this was SOOOO awesome to watch. At first, I though .. oh great - more Ultramarines ... but this was incredible. Mad, mad skills Les ... that brush control is intense! ... do you paint through a lens?
Yes it will, you just have to be consistent with practice. If you can get your hands on the paint on some either broken or messed up space marines for practice. Then move onto normal models and just keep practicing; but you have to be serious about it, you won't get to be this good by just trying it once.
What type of glue are you using to secure it to the minis to those? I assume something decently quick setting and for temporary use, or at least isn't a pain when removing, but that's something I don't personally have. Or is it just a super/krazy glue? How do you remove the residue after wards?
How was the weather like when you painted this figure? i need to know as the difference in thermal pressure and moisture in the air would make alot of difference in the flow of the paint and posterior drying of the it
the 3rd tactical squadron of the ultramarines 2nd company. the company colour is yellow and is used for the sboulder pad edging.if you don't belive me please
What brushes do you use? Probably a common question. My brushes suck so everything I do is drybrush because I can't highlight or blend with what I use.
@Toxicrafa it will not look as good if you just do white, it's a tricky colour to paint so you have to built up, so from black you would use, codex grey, maybe even a layer of fortress grey just so when you put the white on it goes on better.
@PePethegamesmaker NO. lol it's not my job. These videos only exist because I wanted to vblog my paint training season. Why don't YOU paint tyranids or eldar? We would all appreciate it :)
Yeah I remember in concept art UM's have yellow trim, but when it comes to mini painting people use gold, dunno why. Maybe its because yellow is a difficult colour to paint with in mini painting, the undercoat has to be perfect.
I'm confused the paints are listed as vallejo game colors at the end of the video but in part one it says regal blue was used which is not the name of any vallejo blue
seriously though--- what kind of models are you using? i've been having to glue each and every individual part together and the only ones i've ever seen where they're already pre-assembled is for the Dark Angels (shoulders have raised surfaces in the form of the Dark Angels chapter symbol) and I've only been able to find those used on ebay, which isn't preferable.. great job on the paint though, i'm learning a lot from your vids!
Can somebody please advise about the mixing ratio stats given in this tut?. If 1 to 1 means one part paint and one part water and i done that it seems my paint would be watery as hell?. I am new to this and use most straight from the pot?.
Gah I have to redo my Blood Ravens like that... All I used was a basecoat and then went over that... I painted all the details but no techniques like washes or highlighting... They look FINE but when you compare them to my Guardsmen (who I wash, highlight, painted freehand camo onto...) they look baaad.
I thought the trims of the ultramarines where yellow not gold. In the insignium astartes they say the collor is yellow still wondering why people paint it gold?

Thx lester, you helped me improve my painting so much in the past year. Continu your ''awsome'' work.
@Mancinta lol ok. Probably the fantastic light a photo box creates.. dunno. You don't see video of the model after the matte coat and that's really what makes the model FINISHED. Smooth as butter!
It's amazing how well tooth picks fit into the holes in the back backs!
@Draper1 Mini dowels I got from a Michaels store. They are basically toothpicks that haven't been sharpened yet.
@pierrespringuel I don't have GW paint anymore. But when I did I put them all in reaper dropper bottles to get accurate measurements. Now I use all Vallejo Paints.

Thanks! Dark Angels are next. Gonna show how to do cloth and scars on the face in that one. Gonna be fun. Should have the first part up tonight.
@ragiskel I assume you mean the right shoulder insignia. On tactical squads it's usually the standard but every chapter and squad have various markings to show what type they belong to.
very nice tutorial there Les, thanks for the effort to put them all up
Nice, getting a pair ASAP! Thanks. I must admit, I haven't watched for a while now, when did you change the format - the videos are excellent quality ... and your views have sky-rocketed! Congratulations ...

Thanks! Primer= Color Place Flat White. Sticks= Mini dowels from Michaels Arts and Crafts, Basically toothpicks just without the sharpened ends.
Do you find that the visors distort your depth perception? It doesn't seem so, that brush control is incredible! I've found that happens to me when using various styles of lenses.
Well i dont know about anyone else but, that was an AWSOME PAINT JOB!
SWeet I love that scope effect thing you did!
Thanks for making this. It's really helpful and inspiring. Good job.
@redzor812 It was generated using Sony Cinescore software which sadly isn't around any more. You wouldn't be able to get the song anywhere else.
I personally use "Brush Shaper/Restoration from "Mona Lisa Art Products". It comes in a small jar and you just coat the brush in it wipe it on a paper towel and shape it back to a point while wiping it works great!
im just getting into warhammer 40k and this tutorial helped me alot thanks
you have such a steady hand
is on the list so keep an eye out!
@masterkiller49 it's not on the list but there's other chapters that will cover half and quartered schemes.
@awesomepaintjob Toothbrush is quite cool, and double use
I love the base of that miniature. How may I do to make my miniature bases look like that?
OMFG you are the best painter ever
@steadyeddie235 I didn't have a lot of money when I started the channel so I asked people from a forum I went to all the time if they were interested in donating minis for some tutorials that I would send back to them when done. I love the look of this figure!
But did the UltraMarine not have red bolters?
outstanding video my brother! You are truly talented and inspiring to us fellow painters or hobbyists. Disregard the idiots with the stupid comments or dumb questions. @nothung2145 got the vallejo from thewarstore and the brush from there in the Reaper section and on dickblick.
APJ I love your work!
@kahanejosh brushes used are always listed at the end of the video in the credits.
Finally a good tutorial! Thanks man!
oh yeah! Makes the models smooth :)
That is werry nice job !!! can u try the moro desert colour ???
this is so cool!
I'm going to try this for myself
why do you water down all the paints?
what kind of brush do you use?
Will you make a "How to paint Celestian Lions"? its my favourite Chapter, and the colour of my space marines 8D
that is definitely an awesome paint job. thanks for the vid

im amazed, BY YOUR AMAZING SKILLS
im jealous ;D
how can you do that with the white? with one coat over the codex grey? looks so bad on mine D:
@Tomdud1 Thanks! Crimson Fists in on the list and set to be done.. soon :)
Yes it will, you just have to be consistent with practice. If you can get your hands on the paint on some either broken or messed up space marines for practice. Then move onto normal models and just keep practicing; but you have to be serious about it, you won't get to be this good by just trying it once.
@felo790 Use whatever you are comfortable painting with.
would the same techniques used in this video, be equally as suitable for larger models such a dreadnoughts?
What type of glue are you using to secure it to the minis to those? I assume something decently quick setting and for temporary use, or at least isn't a pain when removing, but that's something I don't personally have. Or is it just a super/krazy glue? How do you remove the residue after wards?
Great tutorials Les....keep 'em coming! I have IG, ork and spacemarine minis. Let me know if you need any of them for a tutorial....M
How was the weather like when you painted this figure? i need to know as the difference in thermal pressure and moisture in the air would make alot of difference in the flow of the paint and posterior drying of the it
@awesomepaintjob How come you're not using modrian blue foundation paint?
@awesomepaintjob wy u didnt put the jet pack and the gun on first and then paint it?
Two questions big guy:
one - how do never make little mistakes??
Two - what you using to stick the backpack/gun to the stick?
pre-heresy AL is in the lineup so keep an eye out :)
what actual model is that?
oh and what are you using to hold the gun when you paint it? a toothpick? but how do you get it on? plz reply :)
What kinda of putty do you use to hold the models on the top of the old paint jar?
@Zamudiokid its just the set the mini came in. Assault on black reach, everything is pop in. Nothing has changed really ;)
the 3rd tactical squadron of the ultramarines 2nd company. the company colour is yellow and is used for the sboulder pad edging.if you don't belive me please

how do u paint so good

what is this matte coat you talk of, ive never heard of it...is it a specific product?
@Irpracer123
Not a jet pack btw, seeing as he's a tactical marine. Assault marines have the jet packs.
@PePethegamesmaker NO. lol it's not my job. These videos only exist because I wanted to vblog my paint training season. Why don't YOU paint tyranids or eldar? We would all appreciate it :)
@awesomepaintjob can you send me a link were i can get vallejo paints and the kolinsky 0 brush?
Hey apj can you guys make a guide for raven guard?
@TheGizmo3331
Diluted simply means watered out, and 2:1, if you take it in mililiter it would be, 2 ml of the colour and 1 ml of water
Yeah I remember in concept art UM's have yellow trim, but when it comes to mini painting people use gold, dunno why. Maybe its because yellow is a difficult colour to paint with in mini painting, the undercoat has to be perfect.
Yeah I feel the same way when I put new paint jobs next to old ones hehe.
Thanks ash!
Ultramarines 2nd Company has gold trims. It's in the painting guide.
When you say diluted 1:1, do you mean one drop of paint and one drop of water?
@BulletNyourhead Tactical Marine fro the AoBR box.
great tutorials
@Malfosify It's generated with Sony Cinescore software so I have no idea who the artist is :/
is there an arrow on every type of chapter like on black templars
I'm confused the paints are listed as vallejo game colors at the end of the video but in part one it says regal blue was used which is not the name of any vallejo blue
This dude is a beast. nuff said.
seriously though--- what kind of models are you using? i've been having to glue each and every individual part together and the only ones i've ever seen where they're already pre-assembled is for the Dark Angels (shoulders have raised surfaces in the form of the Dark Angels chapter symbol) and I've only been able to find those used on ebay, which isn't preferable..
great job on the paint though, i'm learning a lot from your vids!
These "pre assembled" UltraMarines can be bought in the starter paint sets :) you get like 5 Ultramarines and some paint plus brush
Hey! You know a cool second founding chapter from Ultramarines the Mortifactors
@pierrespringuel GOOGLE is your friend for finding tutorials and techniques :)
How do you exactly dilute and mix paints?
have an idea for you :P, make a tutorial on how to paint eagle warriors :D(half white, half blue :P)
@awesomepaintjob how do you attatc them to model though?
How does your brush stay so straight?
Where do you get your brushes?
In the insignium astartes they say the collor is yellow still wondering why people paint it gold?
all my colors are diluted. The old vids just don't say they are. Diluted paints give smooth finishes.
Are these custom models or no?
You should do luna wolves
@godofwarc93 matte varnish
@felo790 for quality brushes, I've used Raphael Martre Kolinsky brushes, I think theyre better than the games workshop brushes for sure
@ahhhh01 one- I do
two- super glue
Take a look at insignium astartes the uniforms & regelia if the space marines page 18 thank you for you commend.
indeed. i cant get my paint to look as smooth as he's doing
can i base coat it with tamiya metallic blue?
when i dilute myn they just run into the corners of the parts that you want to leave darkend!
