  • Yes, another kit amp arrives the bay at the good ship D-Lab. Unfortunately full of build errors. My plan, gut it and start over. Yes, this will take time & expense. The owner understands. My message to all of you. If you buy a kit with good intensions, but then think, well I might not be up to this, send it to me. I will build it properly, give you a plug & go amp, save you time & money. I'm sure there are many unbuilt or failed projects out there. D-Lab accepts the danger. Contact me if you are in need. D-Lab-Out...

    In the old Heathkit days, if a customer got stumped assembling a product, they could either work with a tech oveer the phone, or send the product back to the factory and have a tech repair or finish the kit. I imagine that service model would be prohibitively expensive today. Their motto was, "Never allow the customer to fail."

    great kit. I have been fortunate to build several MojoTone Kits including a Princeton reverb. i do want to add that an amp with 7 tubes, reverb, trem and then modifications it's not the easiest in the world. Especially if it is a first build attempt. If you are new to building slow down! One thing i did starting out was use a highlighter and mark each wire/component one at a time as I soldered them in. Just my .02 cents maybe that will help someone. D-lab will get it straightened out!

      Using a permanent marker to draw lines along the lenght of wires, you can get more color codes than the typical rainbow wire kit. Yellow/black stripe, red/black stripe, etc.

  • @JasonTHutchinson
    @JasonTHutchinson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These kit amps can be a real headache to troubleshoot because you can't assume anything on them is right. The Mojotone instructions say to use a ground tab for the high voltage center tap, but I would recommend soldering the center taps directly to the chassis. They probably assume that most people are not going to have a high wattage iron. Over time, that tab can become loose.

  • @jutukka
    @jutukka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well, whoever did that mess, should practice building low voltage battery powered equipment first, preferably for many years.
    Connecting the plate and grid of the same triode of 12AT7 together surely gives quite a mojo to the tone but only when the amp is both fully working and fully cranked up first, before connecting that plate voltage to grid, and that mojo sound can last less than a second so be sure that your mother-in-law is near the loudspeaker at the very moment.

    The builder here decided to follow a schematic that he/she didn't understand. Don't make things before you have a conceptual idea of what goes where. This is not a math test where you just "remember the formula". If you don't understand it, this will fry you.

  • @tad5920
    @tad5920 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It seems like building a kit like this for a novice may be a bit much, but regardless, if the build is approached as a learning experience, and taken slowly and carefully it could be a great learning opportunity. Or you could die. Hopefully the former will apply, not the latter.

    I generally like your channel but you need to back off on ppl who make mistakes. Seriously, you only learn if you step outside your comfort zone and that’s where you’re most likely to make mistakes. Turning around to tell ppl don’t undertake this if your not qualified when they’ll never reach that point if they don’t try is dumb. I think the same thing about your “cobbler” skits. Explain why it’s a mistake. Explain why it won’t work. But stop kicking down on folks who’re clearly less experienced than you. They’ll never get to your level if you keep it up. You’d prefer there be someone capable and interested in this when you’re gone right? Maybe that guy won’t try electronics in the future bc he failed here and you shamed him about it. This could have been the tip of his proverbial iceberg that lead to a whole new passion after he’d learned from his mistakes. He knows already he made mistakes that’s why he sent it to you what he doesn’t need is a lecture on not biting off more than you can chew. My 2 cents. Cash it where it suits you.

      Lighten up. Terry is making learning electronics fun with the cobbler skits. As noted in another comment, tube amps have enough voltage and current available that a simple mistake can be fatal. Point is if you are making simple mistake as shown here, it is very likely that this person does not understand electronics well and how to safely work in a live chassis...A Very Dangerous situation. This is not a knock on anyone it's just reality. Sure there were many Kits back in the day from Heathkit etc. and it was dangerous then...just like how there was a time before seatbelts and little awareness of the dangers of smoking cigarettes. I believe Terry is a good guy and doing a great job at providing entertaining teachings of electronics.

    • @arsenicjones9125
      @arsenicjones9125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnathandavis3693 have you priced non-functional tube gear lately? $700 is not a price point that should keep ppl from trying something new. Especially since it comes w way more instruction than learning by repairing/modding. If you wanted to take up welding as a hobby price a new mig welder for me. Or you wanna take up woodworking price a set of chisels and a plane for me. New hobbies cost either way so the implication that $700 is just too much and should be causing ppl to not step into this is patently ridiculous.
      Advising ppl to be cautious is different than advising ppl not try unless they’re 100% they can do it w/o any mistakes.
      I honestly don’t want to argue this out cuz that’s not going to help you or me. I already see your perspective, that you’re not intentionally discouraging ppl, now I’d like it if you could attempt to see my perspective that your approach might be discouraging ppl unintentionally. I’m not implying someone’s “bad” or that I’m “right” and by extension you’re “wrong” but attempting to elucidate a different perspective.
