Suddenly I'm thinking of OFMD as the best, most insane, pirated themed D&D campaign ever, and it is giving me life! Frenchie is indeed a classic bard, and I love him to death. Also, Spanish Jackie is that one Inkeeper who is sick to fucking death of parties of adventurers passing through her place and trashing it at least twice a week. She will mess your party up if you set a foot wrong. Best NPC ever. 😆
Its important to note that frenchies concern with ed in episode 5 is because of racism. They treated ed badly the moment he walked in because no matter how fancy he's dressed he is still seen as less than for being poc. (Not going into depth here but) Frenchie is an ex slave/servant to rich twats who knows what its like and he immediately shows concern when ed storms out upset. I think ed remembers this moment as 'atleast someone showed concern for me that wasn't stede' plus jim is also poc.
no that's an excellent point! the way this show deals with race is so so good especially for a historical comedy. it's not outright ignored, but it's not literally traumatising
I think it's kinda both, Ed does not belong, no education no rich birth everyone in their right mind knew this would not end well, but the choice of adding a layer of meaning with them being poc as well....
Also agree that Frenchie asking Ed if he was alright earned him the brownie points. I genuinely believe if there's ANYONE in that ship who would be able to crack the Kraken persona, it's unexpectedly gonna be Frenchie. While Lucius is our sassy "truth bomb" friend, Frenchie is all about asking questions, and listening.
I think the alternate explanation truly hits the mark - Ed is in break-up mode, he wants to split up any couples (and couplings) to avoid seeing happy friendships and relationships flourish. FrenchWee (TM, C, R) weren't (explicit) lovers, but very close still.
This was somehow one of the few shows where I wasn't constantly comparing everything to a D&D adventure. But not anymore! Although, I think every one of those checks were deception. As a proficiency in deception instead of persuasion turned one of my bards into a compulsive liar, it can make a difference.

So, Frenchie is a Bard with craft feat of tailor. His Roomie friend is a barbarian with the magic initiate feat because he loves fireballs. Nordic Angel Swede is a bard of eloquence with mobile feat or dark vision. Buttons is a Druid or Wizard because he can hex & enjoys moonbathing. Lucius is a wizard/cleric with keen mind feat. Pete is a fighter with the actor feat. Roach has the cook feat but is a death cleric or blood fighter. Jim is obviously a rogue with sharpshooter feat & disguise kit. Olu is the Paladin who pledged to Jim, an oath of bonds. Karl was Button’s familiar. Stede is probs a bard of eloquence; who I hope adds sharpshooter or swashbuckler as a feat. Ed is obviously a barbarian with keen mind & abnormally high wisdom. Izzy/Iggy is a warlock, a toxic follower who turns Ed into his patron.
So I know most of you guys don't know folk music and so arne't aware HOW MANY SONGS sort've run outta words and do a little yodel at the end like that one, but THEY DO and just, I never understood why before, and now I do. Cos a bloke's just strollin about, yea? And strumn liek, and can't be arsed to think up more words, so why not? Just do a nice lil yodel at the end. It's tidy and just right. It's grand.
I definitely agree that Frenchie and Wee John were also split up purposefully. Whether they’re a couple or friends isn’t clear but there’s definitely a bond.
Ngl, Frenchie's shenanigans in episode 5 reminded me of my bard assisting the warlock in playing conman when stealing a magic item from a big merchant. Long story short, merchant's employees hired us to do it because, while the magic item made the merchant very handsome, the newfound attention was also getting to his head, and they just wanted their old boss back. Bard posed as the warlock's assistant and gave him pointers on how to lie more effectively (expertise on Deception, baby). We were able to pose as Magic Item Experts and convinced him the item he equipped was cursed, and with some GOO warlock pact shenanigans the grift was VERY convincing, complete with the poor man temporarily turning into a eldritch horror.
My god Frenchie is such a gem he needs more love. And he is 100% a bard
