  • 4:15 pm June 16, 2015: Just trying to legally cross the street, if only the walk light would let me! Street light is 2 min 30 sec long, yet I'm only allowed 15 seconds to legally cross the street.
Longfellow Ave. & Sepulveda Blvd., border of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.

if you would have walked when it said to walk, you wouldn’t need to continue to push it. it’s already gone through that cycle so it’s not going to work a second time. It just needs to reprogrammed to stay on walk as long as the light is green.

You do not take into account the pedestrian who arrives at the crosswalk 30 seconds after the light turns green. You expect them to wait two minutes when it’s perfectly safe to cross? I made the video to show Caltrans the issue. FYI Caltrans fixed the beg button so that when pushed, crosswalk signal reverts to green hand and remains so for +/-20 seconds before light turns red.

@@Panarech most likely it’s programmed to only work once per cycle so if you arrived 30sec after a green and pushed it, it would turn to walk, granted there was enough time remaining in the cycle for crossing the street.

@@matthewgroza If you watch the video, arriving 34 seconds later and pushing the button does not turn it to walk. At 1:10 mark, I tried pushing again...does not change it to walk. That's the whole point of the video, the beg button wasn't programmed correctly. Let's say you walk out the adjacent building and arrive at the crosswalk two minutes into the cycle. How do you know how far along the cycle is? Do you chance crossing the street hoping there is still time to cross? Technically crossing the street when the hand is solid red is a ticket. At any rate, Caltrans fixed this for me. Thanks for your interest.
