I totally agree, you suddenly remember its not just your plants who benefit from being protected from the weather. It's warm enough to enjoy that small level of protection before it's too cold to want to be out there. My hands get far to muddy to hold a mug of tea. I have planted some chard and lettuce in my own greenhouse. Although, my biggest winter success has to be curly parsley, which I grew outside under cover. It bushed out and I got 8 months of continual harvest, this is in Yorkshire, UK. I can only aspire to have a clean a greenhouse as yours.
I had heard repeatedly people saying they're planting perpetual spinach, couldn't figure out what it was. Thank you for mentioning it's a chard. I am trying just one crop over winter because I suck at cabbage and other brassicas. But, first shot at purple sprouting broccoli. I won't have any garden space in spring so all my perennials are going to be sold or given away. Trees included.
Fast becoming my favourite channel. I'm new to gardening. I used to avoid it unless I was working with the pond. Just bought a polycarbonate greenhouse 8 x 12ft, after having a couple of cheap polyurethane things. Not built it yet. Desperately waiting for my toms and chillies to ripen (sunny Manchester). Trying to plan staging and layout. I've bought a tool station/work bench, as an alternative potting bench. I have a worm composter that is buzzing along merrily. Built my own cheap irrigation system. Must be something to do with hitting my mid 50's, and impending retirement. Thanks for your fun, informative, engaging videos. Loving them.
you have recommended a good range of seeds for winter planting, If you haven't already tried it Grenoble Red is a fantastic tasting winter lettuce variety, its was one Steve's favs too!
The joy of being in a greenhouse on a rainy day.... unless it's a home made greenhouse with random leaks in the roof ;) Actually it's still nice because there are some nice spots and it's always a touch warmer than outside :D My peppers/capsicum are coming along nicely now so hopefully I can get a good crop this year :D I think I'm slowly getting better at sowing my seeds ahead of planting them out (ie getting a head start because of the benefit of the greenhouse, letting them grow strong then planting out).
I love the sound of rain in your greenhouse! We're in such a drought where I live in WV (US), I'd love to be listening to the rain! Excited to start a few seeds. 😊
I’m in Paphos, Cyprus and we got no rain at all from April to November, this year. Was such a rush when the rain finally returned! You don’t realize how much you miss it until you don’t have it!
Living in the extreme SE of UK, I can be fairly sure of a mild winter, often no minus numbers. Very different to Scotland and your growing conditions. My garden is still in full harvest mode, so initially I was a little taken a back at your emptiness! Agree on the winter sowing. I have lettuces, chicory and endive all ready to jump into the beds. Love winter spinach too. Great advice as always x.
Totally agree with the lovely sound of rain when I'm in my greenhouse...☺ I've started my winter lettuces and onions that will hopefully grow happily in the greenhouse this fall and winter. I started them kind of late last year. So I'm hoping by getting them sown in late August/1st wk of Sept (as you recommended 👍🏻), they'll have more time to grow before the cold temps descend upon us. Thanks for the ideas for other winter greens to try.
Love the sound of the rain in the background. Hoping we get some here soon, we are absolutely parched this season. Now I am really looking forward to sowing seeds and listening to the rain. Very relaxing, thanks.
Rain? What is that? None here in California since May 2nd, which is typical. Still too hot to sow my salad plants directly, but I'm sowing indoors to get them started. Love my spinach, lettuce, kale, etc. Thanks for the video, and as always, good information ❤
Such a lovely relaxing video .... just the video I needed ... as I want to sow some seeds for over Winter ....but never too sure what to sow .... I love being in my Greenhouse when it's raining ... a lovely sound of nature ❤️❤️❤️🍂🍂🍁🍁
Love the sound of rain on the greenhouse, it's the same if you are in a caravan, kinda comforting. I have to thank you for recommending King of the north peppers, stunning plants and one had 9 peppers on it. Well pleased. Where are the pepper seeds Steve available, please?
Woooohooo that fab, I’m glad you had success with them. Afraid Steve seeds aren’t commercial seeds. They are saved seeds from what was originally a store bought pepper a few years ago. They’ve been named in remembrance of Steve at Green Side Up
Have fallen across your channel this week and am loving your content - great work! Currently working in my greenhouse in the Adelaide Hills and equally loving the green seed raising mix container you have on the bench - where did you get that?!
I got it from a UK gardening company but you can get them online from various folks. The company I got it from called it a greenhouse todo but I’ve seen them called potting trays too
Hi Eli, Another great video, thank you! I was watching a two or three year old video of yours on overwintering peppers and saw you used a lovely green watering can with a brass rose. Can you tell me where you got it from, and also your lovely flowerpot mug? There was a link to 'our gear' in the notes but the page isn't there. Thank you. Pauline
Hellooooo Ok yeah the website for the kit has gone now sorry So the watering can is from Haws, it was a Christmas present from Kate The mug was a gift from one of the viewers but you can get them on Amazon
i planted kale and swiss chard and tatsoi and pak choi so far swiss chard done brilliantly and kale only 1 of 25 came up and looks poorly and my tatsoi suppossed to be 20 only got 2 also growing some lettuces too. good to see we growing similar stuff, all in my newly made by me polytunnel greenhouse thing on decking lol
hmmm honestly Gemma, you can't "get rid of" the wildlife. You have to work with it, after all you are planting into their home. What you can do is try to reduce the amounts and manage the areas. Most commonly folk go out after dark with a torch and pick off any slugs they see and dispose of them. You'd be surprised how many slugs you'll find after dark. Another good way to manage things is to reduce the amount of areas that appeal to them, so keep the ground as clear as you can. Clean up old leaves and plant litter so there are no decaying materials to attract them, less for them to hide under. The reverse of this is that some folk will leave an old plank of wood sitting in a bed deliberately so that the slugs will crawl under it to hide, and then you can go pick them off and dispose of them. You can also use slug traps, saucer or buried jars with cheap lager in them, it attracts the slugs and they drown in it. It's pretty grose to have to empty it every day but it does work. You'll also hear a lot of UK folk talk about nematodes which can help drastically reduce numbers, it's expensive but a good solution if you are definitely on a mission to reduce their numbers.
@mtnlindama8146 no that’s the way the kitchen has been for about 8 years now. Took us a while to do it after we moved in but that meant we got it exactly as we liked 😁
Hard to say what wasn’t going well for you with not being able to see it all, but mine defo prefers the cool weather, hence sow it at this time of year. Good nutritious soil and plenty of water.
@@eliandkate I think w had a bit of a heatwave going on when I sowed it. Plus never had heard of it or knew what to do. Might try it again, plenty of seeds left in the packet.
@@eliandkate Me too but I keep a lot of seeds from places where I can't go. Some for over 20 years. Thanks for responding. Love you guys across the pond!
Not copying you - but interesting to watch anyway. Your summers might be somewhat similar to ours, but only dormant plants like strawberries and lovage survive the winter in my pots. Aren't you worried the soil in the greenstalk will freeze since the pockets are smaller and don't isolate as well as a larger bed?
I garden in Zone 3 and in my experience, red lettuces such as Red Sails hold up better in cold temps. That said, no year round gardening here except heated greenhouses! LOL Water that lettuce by putting it out in the rain?

I really want a greenhouse.
Me, too! Really miss my greenhouse
Great to see you active on a rainy day. You make a dreary day exciting as you continue with more seeds and plants.
Gotta make the best of dreary days when you live here 😜
Just watched and made note of the Marvel lettuce as been looking for winter greens for the daily salads :)
Marvel for the win!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it!
Working on my fall garden beds. I guess I have the gardening sickness bad because I can’t wait for winter seed starting.

I love the sound of the rain. We have a partly flat roof and sometimes it's so loud it sounds like thunder! Great, timely video, as always! 👍
