Great lessons here. Do what needs to be done when you can do it. It is painful to cut down beautiful plants, but it may be necessary. Nice demonstration of winter prep for your Dahlias.
I love your videos and will just have to catch up on some of the previous ones from the past eight years while you have your break. Enjoy! Don’t forget to come back strong in the Spring 😀

❤ Winter’s first snow is falling right now and I’m glad I put the gardens plus planters to bed weeks ago. I actually pulled another 10 lbs of carrots this week with more still in one raised bed. Please post even a short when the yard looks particularly beautiful or if you harvest anything. 😊
What a lovely garden you have and thank you for all your efforts to share with us. Wishing you both well and hope you enjoy your very well earned rest xx
Hi Eli & Kate, thats a great tip on how to care for Dahlias in winter months. I've grown from seed, never grown dahlias before and they were all lovely. So, im going to cut them back & mulch and see if they survive. Lovely planted flowers 💐 lovely video too. Its really cold here too. Enjoy your well earned break. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Aww I'm going to miss you & Kate 😢 but totally understand you need a break. I'll definitely look forward to when you do get to do the odd video. Enjoy the rest & relaxation. Loved the whole video by the way but then I always do. Sending big hugs and saying a big thank you Tina (Dublin, Ireland ☘️🥰)
Beautiful colors in that raised bed! Winter’s, as well, about to take what little I have in my beds here in Alabama USA. Take care of your back. Enjoy your rest. Thanks for sharing your garden. Hope to see it again in the Spring!
I love primrose & polyanthas and violets together but always think of them as spring plants so was surprised to hear they are winter ones. As children my sister and I used to go picking them and sell to neighbours in bunches. We lived in a council house so none of us were wealthy but we always sold them. I look back and think how generous our neighbours were because they could be collected along the railway embankment and down the local lanes. Thanks for triggering a lovely memory from 70 years ago. Enjoy the respite from regular video. Rug up it looks cold there.
The colour in your garden is fantastic! You have converted me from being afraid (yes afraid) of attempting to grow Dahlia's to being excited about growing them for the first time in 2025. Thank you! Enjoy your well deserved ease of popping out YT videos.
Wow! Incredible! I can’t believe it still alive! The same thing has happened here. I tossed perfectly good stuff. It is what it is. It looks really beautiful! Time off is good! See you when you return! Enjoy your holidays!
I don't want to miss a thing so I've clicked that little bell on my subscribe now ! Like the garden, rest periods are good so enjoy and I can't wait to see what blooms next season 🙌
I moved my two little holly trees to my front door yesterday, they live there for the winter. I love that the berries have started to appear. It's such a joy to see your lovely garden. I wish you both a well earned rest! 🐱🌲xx
Enjoy your much-earned rest. The garden centres here only have winter greens for the holidays, and then they close until late March. I have to grow winter flowers from seed, and I always forget. I can't even get pansies. I love your primulas.
On the way home from the garden centre, We were chatting about how I could grow all that stuff from seed but it would mean I couldn’t grow my tomatoes and peppers because I’d have to give up the space for the seed sowing and growing So we decided nah…. We can buy plants if needed 🤣🤣🤣
Enjoy your time off Eli and I hope your back gets better soon, I thought at first your announcement was you had hurt your back 🥴. Your beds look lovely with the primroses. Take care
Hope your back is better soon and enjoy your well deserved rest. Looking forward to when you do produce any videos and I will be there when you return xx
I love this video thank you for posting this. I love the fact that you know this is the part that people don’t talk about and I love how you do that I always called the ugly side of things you know it’s not really ugly, but you know it’s the dark side where we have to dig up our beautiful things and I do that too. I live in Texas and there’s a lot of things are winters are so wet here that a lot of things don’t winter over in the ground and so I remove a lot as well and it’s so hard to do, but I’ve gotten to where I just cut the flowers and put them in. Enjoy them inside or give them to my mom or my friends And I have roots to grow next year and I grow a lot of plants that are not perennials that do not come back and I don’t wanna get rid of them so I dig them up and cut them off to the pot bring them in and they struggle along until I put them back out and then they grow all over again, so I keep them from year after year, but I have to dig them up out of the ground to do so and I love the fact that you talk about the stuff that most people don’t wanna talk about. It’s reality of being a gardener for this thank you I love your videos
I've cut down several beautiful flowers, it was painful. Still holding on to a few calendulas, but frost and snow is near, so it's the last few days. My coriander froze tonight, but OK to harvest and use in a hummus. I don't have dahlias and don't bring anything in for overwintering, but I'm sheltering the pots outside because I had so much wet soil last spring. Of course I'm subscribed, won't miss a thing! I will watch your videos when they come and enjoy your garden instead of the all white scenery here. You deserve to relax a bit over winter. There are other things in life besides gardening too. 😉
Thanks , nice end to the season, -5c in N. Lanarkshire this morning, my hydrangea heads have instantly turned from pink to brown overnight. Winter cabbages looking good, onion seeds have germinated and looking strong, broccoli spears still cropping , leeks lifted and now in the freezer .oh and garlic planted in time for these first frosts. The odd short video with reminders and links to your old stuff now and then would be great. Enjoy all the fun in the next few weeks ….through at Livingston this morning and it was bursting!
Taking a break is good, as long as it's not for doing a lot more shopping. 😛 Kate may need to find a few bits of distraction action for both of you. Yes, videos don't magically appear, they're time consuming. I do hope you get your back healthy again, suggest an afternoon of massages, maybe a sauna, and a wee bit of Drambuie. See you two later! 🫂
Hi kate and eli glad you've now finished planting bulb, as always very informative I'm waiting to buy a helibore, Enjoy some video time off, see you when you do posts, thanks for all your videos we got plenty to revisit ❤👍
@eliandkate I remembered from a video last year you saying they were a favourite but I missed out on them at the garden centre I won't do that this year ❤️
🇨🇦 -20 to -30 degrees winter says yes, if I want the same Dahlia's next year they must be dug 😂 I treat them as annuals, because I also don't have a suitable storage space. I don't grow many.
I love your channel, so many tips for growers - thanx a bunch! In fact, You mentioned cosmos that is not cosmos which was a bit confusing for me. So, could you please clarify wether it would be possible to overwinter them or not. I know, it is not a perennial plant, but I perked up my ears, when you mentioned the idea that there was the possibility to store them. Thank you in advance for your answer! Enjoy your winter, and I look forward to your videos anytime.❤❤❤
Ah so that was Chocolate Cosmos. They are called cosmos but they are in fact a different plant. They have tuberous roots so can be stored like dahlia. They are perennials but again, not in my climate so I have to over winter them.
@eliandkate thank you for your answer. Now I see your point. I live in zone 6b/7, similar to yours, and I think that is why I was surprised that we can store the roots of cosmos. I love your flower bed arrangement for this year! It seems that you used candelabra primrose; I would also recommend rosebud primrose, ivy-leaved cyclamen, and hellebore-all hardy and providing a picturesque display. You mentioned chocolate cosmos-fantastic! They are scented flowers. I had no idea that cosmos could produce fragrance. I am over the moon; thank you!
What a lovely video fully of beautiful colour ....love your new trees ...fabulous .... take a well deserved break & wishing you both a very happy Christmas time & New year 😊😊❤❤🌲🌲
As an alternative, have you considered just covering your dahlias with some plastic to divert the rainwater? Not surrounded by the plastic like a mini greenhouse/coldframe where you need to monitor the temperature inside, but just a 'roof' to keep the rain from getting in? Then all you'd need to do is give a bit of water on warm days if the soil is too dry in order to keep the tubers from drying completely out over the winter, but you shouldn't need to dig them up. Might be a labor-saving solution..
Well, I’ve got some big announcements to garlic is sprouted. I’ve built a new bigger raised bed for a strawberry patch next year who says gardening season is over here although we’ve had several hard frost. Forgot to mention, got my first seat order can’t wait till I order my strawberries next spring.
and yous might survive fine. You only need to go to this effort if you have really wet ground over the winter and spring. Why go to the extra effort if you don't need to :D
Had a server frost last night in Gateshead and overnight my Dahlias foliage has turned black, so I'm now away out to dig up those tubers, I hate this time of year 😥😥😥
Please tell me where you got your greenhouse benches from. I have never seen folding tables like yours. Is there a weight limit on them I garden in zone 7b/8a in the pacific nw usa . I am new to your show and find you guys refreshingly honest and full of tips and info.
Enjoy your break! You deserve it :) I had a wee question when you get a sec to reply - how can I better insulate my overwintering plants while they're in the greenhouse? I've been growing christmas potatoes in a grow bag since August and even though I brought the bag into the greenhouse, the freeze last weekend killed off the leaves completely (my thermometer said it reached -4C in there!). For now the bag is wrapped in a blanket (a hilarious sight).
it's a case of wrapping them in fleece, or even wrapping the pots in bubble wrap, or even adding bubble wrap to the greenhouse. Obviously though all you can do is protect them against frost, without heating the greenhouse, you won't stop it getting cold if it's cold outside.

Great video once again! I grew some dahlias from seed this year, but only learned afterwards why growing from seed doesn't necessarily give you the flower it shows on the packet. Very informative video! Your garden still looks great. I'm in U.S. ,northeast. We've had our hard frost. My heart goes out to😢
our gardens will be very different through winter Jeanette, I imagine you get much harsher winters
Lashing with rain down here in Cornwall . I'm in the middle of sorting out my Dahlias too . Your garden looks FAB !
so many of us are on dahlia duty at the moment :D It's nice though, feels like we're all connected no matter where we are.
Beautiful winter garden. Here in Colorado, we get too cold to have any plants. Only evergreens for color, but lots of beautiful snow.
We don’t get the beautiful snow, if we get snow at all, it quickly becomes grey slush. I guess we have to rejoice in what we all have in our gardens 😁
