    How do you determine how many METs someone is using based off of what exercise they are doing? For a overweight person doing a “brisk” walk on a treadmill, how would you determine the METs being used for that?

      Treadmills typically have a MET tracker on the screen

      A bit late, but you can look up a chart of walking speed (2 miles per hour is about 2 METs 3 is about 3 and so on) then multiply their weight in kilograms in the above equation then work out the time factors in minutes, using the result.
      So, if they weigh in a 280, it would look a bit like this while walking 4 miles per hour:
      Equation is (METS X 3.5 X BW KG)/ 200
      (4X3.5X127)/200 = 8.89 Calories burned per minute.
      Say they walk at that pace for an hour:
      60X8.89= 533.4 calories burned total.
      So that, until someone corrects my high school level math ability. :)

    Matt, why is it that we need to divide 200? Where does the figure come from? Thanks!

      That is the conversion factor of Oxygen consumption to calorie burn. 1L of oxygen consumed = 5 calories. 1/5 = 0.2 in this case it’s 200 because it’s mL

    How accurate is this, really? That formula says I'm burning 1000 kcal/hr at a MET 7. Is that combining active metabolic rate and RMR, or is it saying the 1000 kcal is on top of RMR values. That number doesn't seem to match real world experience. It's not even close.

      I would check your math. Are you around 300lbs? If so you actually would probably burn close to 1000 calories from an hour at 7 METS. You could also just be working at closer to 5 METS on average because averaging 7 METS for an hour is more intense than you may think.

      @@TheMovementSystem I am. That chart used backpacking as an example. Been on lots of backpacking trips where my weight before and after just doesn't add up, as I'm not eating anywhere near those kinds of numbers. I'm definitely in a caloric deficit, however. I would say effort wise, a lot of my trip I'm going harder than 7, depending on the trail. I'm just having a holy shit moment. According to this, I'm 5-6000 kcals under what I should be eating per day. Im just not seeing that kind of weight loss on these trips.

      @@Chris-pw7ov Yea there is a margin of error. Also backpacking may be closer to 5 METs it's hard to say without being able to actually directly measure oxygen consumption.
