  • Steel offhand daggers can often cost as much as a sword, is Cold Steel's dirt cheap synthetic option a good compromise or starter weapon?

The parrying dagger can do decent damage if you infuse it with sharp, if you do that it will have a S scaling in Dex at +10

Does anyone else here find it funny that a company named "Cold Steel" makes a dagger that doesn't look like steel and is all black, but a company named "Black Fencer" makes a dagger that isn't all black and looks more like a steel dagger? :P

Funny you mention the CS daggers being black for (humorously) "tactical" or "ninja" reasons - that's pretty much how I've felt about various HEMA gear being mostly in black (looking at you, jackets and masks). Less for "ninja" reasons and more for "totally srs guise" reasons

The origins of our kit being black is simply because many years ago, before specific HEMA gear existed, we bought sport fencing coaches equipment, because it is much heavier duty, in fact the masks we use still are the same models, and sport coaching gear is black by default. So it wasn't so much a choice of colour, as the result of the available equipment, and it was just a natural progression to buy black HEMA gear when we transitioned from one to another.

I suppose it's to differentiate HEMA from Olympic fencing.
I'm pretty sure that hits are harder to see on a black jacket that on a white one, so it's rather unfortunate that HEMA went for black, because in tournaments it's more difficult for judges to see what's going on.

There was no desire for white in the first place, or any intention to differentiate it from anything, as I said, it was just standardising with coaches equipment as it was the best available.
It's plenty easy enough to see hits providing the blades aren't black, and tournaments aren't really the aim of HEMA for most, unlike Olympic fencing anyway.

I though I read somewhere that one reason to choose black was that one, I might be wrong.
The shadow of the blade, though, is an important clue to the eye to assess whether there is contact or not, and there's no doubt about that. Whether you realize it consciously or not, the shades are really important for the perception of relative depth and position. That's the reason why pictures taken with the flash light very close to the objective look flat: the shadows are masked by the perspective.

It's a good gateway drug for offhand daggers. If you happen to be fairly good at coordinating your offhand with your attacks, then it will give you a nice little taste of how awesome main gauche daggers are in rapier.

I'm surprised they didn't ball the end and make it softer, like they did the training rondel. My club has found it pretty much perfect for sparring. Perhaps because a main gauche takes so much more abuse. Hmm...

If I get one of those, or any dagger, I think I will get the rapier munchies very badly.

Is there a dagger that can be used like a woodland machete or is it too linear?

Some kind of offhand dagger that could be used like a machete? Certainly not common, because they aren't agile enough for the parry work.

I was looking for some real dagger sparring, not some numb nuts talking about something for 15 minutes.
