I really like the look of this trainer. I would be interested in using something like this as a training tool and think your mixed weapon combat sounds great. Sabre, broadsword, or spadroon against this would be fun.
My bayonet training was a bit different being with an M-16. Unfortunately, my Army has decided that bayonet training is no longer important in basic training. I really disagree with this as the aggression training and ability to hit each other with simulators (pugil sticks) to get people starting to understand what it is like to receive a blow is important. Now the Marine Corps is the only US Military branch that extensively trains anyone in bayonet fighting. The bayonet assault course was a useful training environment to get people moving with live steel while striking targets on the move.
Currently, the Marines use two types of trainers: pugil sticks and a roughed out wooden rifle with a rubber blunt on the end. While practicing the techniques the Marines (and the Army when we did it) just used our assigned rifles with the magazine wells empty and no ammo anywhere near. Here are two links to what those trainers most currently in use with the Marines look like.
The first is the pugil stick with the gear that allows Marines to go all out with relative safety - www.mcrdsd.marines.mil/News/Photos.aspx?igphoto=2001347259
The second is an excerpt from MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) and shows a picture of the wooden trainer with rubber blunt. Also one person's experience with the "Last of the Mohicans" course - www.americassgtmaj.com/but-they-fought-with-expert-timing/
Sorry that the second image isn't the best.
I'll look forward to more videos where you are doing more technique work and/or sparring with this simulator.

Yep, over time I'm gonna pair it with infantry sabre, cavalry sabre, spadroon, basket hilt, and smallsword.
Since we're in lockdown again, I probably won't be able to get any filming done until early 2022. Meh.
      That sounds cool!
Yeah, the M16 and Brown Bess are pretty much opposites when it comes to length hehe. Very different that must be.
Those wooden trainers are pretty much exactly what the Japanese use in Jūkendō. I have no experience with those but some HEMA people used to use them before the Blackfencer came out. They are usually in a similar price range as the Blackfencer but not as accurate. And believe it or not, these wooden trainers are pretty hard to come by in Europe and importing them is expensive.

I prefer a Mokuju. Jukendo has a well thought out curriculum.

I'd poke someone with one of those. They kinda seem like a must have if you want to do the full Roworth manual.

Yep, I agree! Sword vs bayonet skills are an interesting part of the system and also a fun change of pace at the club.

I've thought about these, but how would they fair against steel swords? Alternatively, I'd use a toy cap gun or wooden nerf gun and mount a bayonet made from a fencing dagger blade or modded epee blade.

They are not suitable for use against steel swords in my view. The nylon material will get sharp dents and will get damaged in general.

It worked fine against smallswords, Sabre, would damage them i recon.

Without watching it yet: to light!
The problem most trainers have 😉

Oh absolutely, they are about half the weight of an original. It's certainly something to be aware of but I think it also has an upside: safety and ease of use.

    • @OliverJanseps
      @OliverJanseps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@historyandsabre true and true you have to be aware of.
But unfortunately the weight is an important point even more if you fence against sabers etc. It is the gamechanger.
Btw Die Freifechter experimented with plates of metal on both sides to bring it not to realistic but usable weight 👍

@@OliverJanseps The idea with the weighted plates sounds like a solution worth trying out sooner or later. But considering that nodoy else really makes a trainer like this for the same period and with the correct dimensions, I can live with the weight problem :)

Too light, could stand to be twice their current weight.

Yes, I did talk about that in the video.
