I agreed with your points. It’s outrageously expensive. The models is a bland. The distribution is downright scummy. The rules aren’t chaotically fun and lacks uniqueness. What’s a war without randomness and uniqueness . No war in history lacked randomness and uniqueness.
Gonna be wild to still hear Eldar players say their models are ancient next year after they get another refresh that'll likely end up updating most of the oldest models. Dark Eldar players listening to Craftworld players whine about old models when half their range doesn't even exist anymore
They did you got Eldar guardians, striking Scorpions, dark reapers, autarch, and Maugan Ra. Eldar players just can't let go that they get new stuff and act like they are still starving.
I have a huntch that GW is getting the "Big Corpo" syndrome where they get too big and the old guard who gave a solitary shit get replaced by suits who failed upwards with business degrees.
I love the GW universes but we REALLY need a viable competitor, if only cuz it will force them to get their shit together a little bit. Like an AEW to their WWE.
@@zubjabbajujuthe parent company pretty much bought lot of their competitors if I recall. Best we can do now is voice our concerns and try find other games. Cause the thought of losing consumers to other games not owned by them isn’t a welcome one especially if successful.
The blood angels specifically are a dick move because they released the new AOS prosecutors right around the same time. Like we know they can do amazing angels in golden armor and then just ... didn't.
Comparing the Sanguinor to Tornus the Redeemed is insane. I know some people don't like the design of Tornus but you have to admit the effort that went into this mid tier important Stormcast character (which also can be built to be a generic hero) is crazy
Bringing back the Primarchs, in general, was a mistake. Not only do they tend to be black holes for attention, but they also put the entire IP on the road to getting its own End Times event and subsequent AoS-style "sequel". 40k is a setting, not a narrative.
To be fair that's literally every big named character's problem. It's just happening to imperium Sub-factions now. They don't really do anything as a result of 40k never wanting to move forward.
@@spnked9516there should be a narrative that introduces new stuff, Vashtorr could become a Chaos God and that could be a good thing (If done right) and there would/should be a Long narrative about him becoming one
@@Jakov-or7fp the Horus Heresy is supposed to be that introductory narrative, but it suffers from some of its books being too jargon heavy and the absolutely massive scope it's success spawned. There are other things outside of HH that serve as good entry points - the Cain series or books like the Infinite and the Divine come to mind -, but generally speaking, I would agree that GW has largely dropped the ball on fluff accessibility - something that's largely been shouldered by TH-camrs. As a sidenote and personal rant, Vashtor should have never been added to 40k in the way he was. Seeing as GW reintroduced squats (Votann) back into the setting and teased the idea of corrupted Votann supercomputers, it would have been a great time to bring Hashut into 40k and simply make Vashtor one of his named greater daemons. Unlike the Great Horned Rat in AoS, making Hashut the 5th chaos god isn't redundant or a pigeon holing of the god. Hashut is a god of industry, so he's right at home in 40k. Moreover, he offers a chance to flesh out both the Votann and the Dark Mech at the same time
Being brutally honest anyone who still has the stones to take a Raid: Shadow Legends sponsorship in this day and age almost immediately loses respect. You know it's a shitty gatcha game with predatory microtransactions that plays like ass. Don't piss on me and try to tell me its raining...
41:05 “It feels almost conspiratorial” My brother in Empreror, you sweet summer child, this is literally what this is. As someone who worked in sales, this is literally what you are describing. GW employ the most predatory and thd most disgusting sales tactics and have been for a very very long time.
so back in 2020 I actually did some regressions on a several of GW's financial reports. One of the biggest things learned was that Hasbro (the copyright, trademark, & patent trolls that they are) is the largest minority shareholder of Games Workshop to the tune of 47% - Hasbro are the definition of soulless money seeking suits and GW hired at least one of said suits in an executive capacity. Also found during that regression - GW could drop the price of all of their kits by an easy 50% and still make up to a 30%-40% profit on every one of their kits vs their manufacturing, storage, shipping, and storefront costs. Their returns are frankly obscene and well beyond the "healthy" range of 20-30% rate of return for what they manufacture with most kits coming in at well past the 70% return on cost point.
Agreed, GW sells what people are willing to buy unfortunately. The reason GW can get away with such absurd prices is because people allow it and also because people are not aware of cheap alternatives like 3d printing, recast, or simple proxying.
@@Titleknown Sadly no, old HDD that regression was on didn't survive to 2024 and youtube history only goes back 3 years. No easy grab & copy-paste the results from video comments. That said, GW's publicly traded and legally required to post yearly reports (One for taxes, one for investors.) Look for "investor at games-workshop" and it'll pop up in your search. You'll be looking for their annual & half yearly reports and tax filing.
One of my biggest grudges with the primaris line is , the absence of squad flexibility. I see them more like beefy, less competent eldar shrines, you have the: storm monkeys, guardian monkeys, rocket monkeys, flamer monkeys, fusion "rifle" monkeys, sniper monkeys, edgy spooky monkeys, heavy no mele monkeys, so many single role monkey shrines : r
Yep. As an Eldar fan, reading the Primaris unit list felt... VERY familiar. Like oh you also have flying troops with long range precision guns? Wow, ambush shock troop, and they also have shouty skull masks? Hmm, where have I seen those aspects before.
And then there's loss of mechanical support/representation for melee weapons. Or, at least for non imperial factions. Maybe some imperial factions too. Dark eldar don't have poisoned swords and flesh gauntlets and excruciators and whatever, they have a single (squad leader) melee weapon entry, represent weapons that on the model range from a whip, to a sword, to a gauntlet. All the neat weapons on the model become a generic 'special' weapon for the leader, who doesn't even get a separate stat from the rest of the squad. Most squad leaders don't even have higher leadership than the rest of the squad, and only might get more attacks by having a higher attack number with the single weapon they get. Wargear has been pruned ridiculously, especially with melee. But even the relatively new first primaris models I think lost somme of their options. Intercessors now have a single bolt rifle, no variant with longer range and or precision to represent the rifle build that uses the scope. Put scopes on your bolt rifles? Didn't? Who cares, they all fire the same now.
The reason about the abundence of 3 men squads is that GW can charge the same with less amount of models in the box. Current dollar per point ratio is straight out absurd. An indivigual sanguinary guard mini is worth 20 fucking dollars, and GW models are not that big either so you are paying essentially between %500-%1000 the value of the expenses and material that is required to make them. Skulpts are not bad but damn, it does not justify that much money, getting a 3d printer is actually more cost effective now if you wanna start an army from scratch because every unit is so expensive.
They probably thought it would be easier to balance 6 man elite squads with 2 optional weapons than 10 man squads with multiple options. The 3 man squads are often elites of an army or have a strong ability or weapons, often run at 140+ for a full squad of 6. Think of the bladeguard or the eliminators/eradicators and other infiltrators like supresors and leapers. Granted this is a very positive outlook on this giving them the benefit of the doubt, the more cynical part of me knows this was something related to money more than anything.
Which gets even more ridiculous when you remember that material in a sprue makes up for not a lot of the cost of a model kit. The CNC machines making the moulds aren’t gonna cost much more for working a bit longer and plastic is so cheap that they are already upselling the shit out of it to us before
this video was AMAZING!!!! perfect synopsis of 10th edition. I wish I played more in 7th edition (when 40k was in its slump) to know what went wrong back then so I could compare it to now. 10th feels... ok? like the game plays fine, but it's missing the fun.
It's the Primaris problem, they look good, but we're kinda bland, the old marines proportions were weird, but you understood the Chapter theme...now every one looks the same
Yeah the firstborn DESIGNS are good, the firstborn miniatures are bad. Primaris minis are technically good, but the design just lacks any and all sauce.
I personally believe this was an effort from GW to roll back everything to generic-land so every marine player can potentially benefit from every release and we don't get shelves filled up with boxes that only one player wanted - still have strong memories of walking into a brick&mortar store and an entire shelf was Wolf Guard Termies because they overestimated demand. Just wait though, I'm sure the flenderization will be in full swing by 11th and we get horned Minotaurs marines who ride cyber bulls into battle and hit people with their minohammers. None of the above is based on history, no sir.
Speaking of Orks, Look at at what they did to my boy. Slowly taking away all the fun dumb stuff from them. Such as stormboyz having a random chance of suffering mortal wounds when they fly.
Honestly, as someone who got into the game in 8th edition (so right when "new 40k" started), I pretty much agree with all of your points, and even have other criticisms of my own as a major lore enjoyer. Firstly, the models. Besides the obvious Coteaz and Sanguinary Guard downgrades, there are other major disappointments like the Eightbound (more on those guys later) who somehow look less possessed than the regular possessed marines. Secondly, and a much more serious problem in my opinion, is the rampant purging of models that a lot of people, including myself, really enjoyed to force people to play the stuff the corporation wants to be the face of each army in 40k. Want to play Space Marines and honour the old lore by not using a single Primaris marine? Too bad, we're getting rid of all the firstborn and forcing you to use our corporatised, lore-breaking new additions to the point that we're essentially copy-pasting the old stuff but making it lame and Primaris. Want to use Heresy-era tanks and dreadnoughts in your Chaos armies so that you don't have to use just daemon engines and the same old helbrute? Screw you, all the Heresy stuff's gone to legends where we can gaslight you into not using them and you can only use helbrutes in legions that they wouldn't be appropriate in. And then there's the removal of all subfaction flavour in favour of detachments. As a lore guy, I want to play Word Bearers, not a generic "pactbound zealots" detachments that could apply to anyone. And lastly it's the half-assed releases of major factions like the World Eaters. A traitor legion codex shouldn't only have 5-6 new units and miss key units like Red Butchers, HQs that can lead terminators and even Juggernaut cavalry to go with the 2 cavalry Chaos lords? ...Whew, that took a while to type. Hopefully these gripes resonate with someone here.
28:33 YESSSS. I DESPISE THE NEW HELMETS. IT IS THE MAIN REASON I DISLIKE THE MODELS THESE DAYS. I really love the iconic frowny helmets so much that if I ever put a set together, it's 100% getting kitbashed.
Holy shit I talked about this on a discord server once and was starting to think I was going insane because they were arguing that the mark 10 helms and new sanguinary guard are better because they're "more reasonable" This whole video and comment section is so vindicating, the old mark 7 aquila helm is so much cooler than the primaris helms, primaris just lacks that sheer, unbridled contempt that the 7 had
The MkIV was my favorite helmet. Now it's EVERYWHERE, and I just want the frowny faces back. Like good goddamn not even a single firstborn keep their helmets or something? We had to wait until The Fall- I mean Risen to get some??
The helmets looks so thin. The Mark 7 helmet had a profile of square, this new Mark 10 tacticus helmet has the profile of a tall rectangle. The design language is tall, not wide so it feels kind of disporportionate. Phobos and Gravis helmets are fine, Phobos has their own frowny helmets and Gravis helmets with their wider profile looks more substantial.
It boggles my mind they got rid of the darth vader helmets. I guarantee the primaris wouldn't have been as poorly received if they kept the old helmets, only adding in some bits and bobs
I personally despise the direction GW kits are going where everything becomes cardgame-ified, where a unit is supposed to do exactly one thing and one thing only, with as little customization as possible. For a while now I've wanted to get into Admech, which seemed like a super fun project since i love to kitbash and the Adeptus Mechanicus as a faction just isnt very standardized and unified in the lore, they have lots of wacky eccentricities from forgeworld to forgeworld. But looking at the rules its just... nothing. You'd think the Admech was the most rigidly standardized army in the setting with zero diviance between different forgeworlds in how their equip their units. So there is not really a lot of room to customize and kitbash using different kits. And the army is so god damn expensive too for no reason because GW only knows how to do buffs by doing points cuts. The rules also just plain suck ass for representing their lore, like why is the tech priest side of the army so underdeveloped? Why is the Legio Cybernetica represented by one (1) unit? Why does this army have no artillery units? Where is its command squad style unit? Where's the centrepiece models? Why is the Ordo Reductor represented by zero (0) units? Why is there no special rule for souping in knights? To cap it off the models just... kinda look like ass and also do not fit the lore like at all? We have had decades of descriptions of Skitarii as these weird and disgusting cybernetic monstrosities bristling with ancient and unknowable weaponry. Or how they deploy hordes of shambling tech thrall. Even recent lore tells us that Skitarii augmentations are fucking horrifying, their god damn eyelids are surgically removed so they can never close their eyes! So how is this look and feel captured in the model range? Oh you get the big eyed cute lil guy in the robe! Oh look at these wacky davinci-esque steampunk machines! Wowe! Oh wow here comes the funny stilt guy!
Sadly, Admech in 40k tabletop is mostly not Admech. It is Codex Skitaari with a couple Admech units thrown in. IIRC there were originally plans to move a lot of heresy Mechanicum stuff to 40k, but that seems to have been dropped, and it has been decided that admech is just not getting those units (which sucks, because heresy mechanicum is what you would expect admech to look like+play) If you look at Horus Heresy, Mechanicum there is, well, Admech. Legio Cybernetica, a great mix of various Ordos and so on. - HQs and some elites are tech priests - that get psyker like powers such as cybertheurgy Then you have automata, which are various large robots, some even being what I would call centerpiece-ish, that get buffed by tech priests And in the middle, cyborg abominations that look less sleek than skitaari. Army is lead by an Archmagos prime on a leviating platform that picks your ordo + legio/cohort, which changes a LOT of how your army + tech priests work. Heresy admech also has a lot more vehicles + centerpiece stuff. Shame nobody near me plays Heresy + forgeworld is so expensivee
Yup, that’s the a big reason I didn’t move onto 10e from 9e. Check out 9th edition Admech. Most forge worlds had unique abilities, and allowed for a wide variety of armies. You could even take 2 detachments to have different parts of your army have different forge world buffs. Full actual support for bringing in Imperial Knights (something that used to be unique to them, not something anyone could do in the imperium). Forge worlds allowed you to bring melee armies, skitaari hordes, centerpiece armies being buffed the hell out by tech priests. Defensive armies, aggressive flankers, hyper damage skirmishing. All sorts of stuff. They got left behind balance wise (they’re not bad or anything), but the versatility is still there. Skitaari have a TON of weapon options. The tech priests themselves are pretty strong, but they’re really centered around support buffing. They were also customizable to a large degree. Skitaari and tech priests used to have their own Doctrine buff things, that were much more complicated than they are now. 10e Admech is pathetic in comparison
If you can find out what GW used to transfer unit rules from edition to edition, you could homebrew the 30k Admech stuff to just work properly. it would be pretty hard to find a game for that in my area as it's mostly dominated by Matched play, but I personally would love to fight like a rogue warp traveled Admech army with hyper advanced tech. Could even use the crusade rules with it if you craft a cool narrative to it. Don't let gw or sweats hold back your fun.
I enjoy the Skitarri a great deal, more than the priesthood. That being said, why the fuck are none of the various AdMech colleges/doctrine NOT represented in the models as kit options? Every priest looks way too similar to another.
If I had anything to add about the video, it can be summed up in one word: Valid. I stopped playing competitive 20 years ago and never went back. Do I still buy and paint miniatures? Yes Is my pile of shame taking up several drawers and shelves? Also yes. Just love the minis and lore. As for new space marines, I ❤️ the Primaris. I had been making terrible attempts at truescale marines and this was the scratch I always needed.
The sisters of battle launch box wasnt a maliciius decision, it was genuine incompetence as it was clearly meant to be released during 7th edition where the squads made sense as in 8th ed they changed so many things it just didnt
I am kinda sad over how Psykers and Chaplains work in 10th edition. Frankly I miss the level of customizability in 9th edition. I miss being able to create cool combos with Warlord Traits and Relics. I loved how I could turn a Sword Brother into a mini HQ with the Hero of the Feast stratagem. I loved how Chaplains had lists of litanies I could choose from. Now that I play Grey Knights. They feel nothing different from my Black Templars even though they should be polar opposites. Without a psyker phase, every power and litany is just another aura or ranged weapon.
Couldn't agree more. I never played a space Marine captain before 10th because my Chaplain's and Librarians were so much fun to play and offered a unique experience in gameplay.
11th ed, set up armies on the board, roll d6, opponent rolls d6, winner wins. Balanced tournament play pack written, done. Regular rules released for casual fun players with actual stat profiles and rules.
People are quick to blame the competitive scene for the lack of flavorful rules, without realizing that a large reason why the rules are so bland was because of GW also catering to casual players trying to make easy and simple rules. Its funny seeing casuals blame the competitive scene, and the competitive scene blame the casuals.
@@aqz7603 I think it's more because less rules makes it easier to balance the game for competitive players, so yeah, it's more on the competitive scene. Sure, it will benefit beginners to get into the game, but the non-beginner casual players tend to be into cool narrative scenarios rather than obsessing about actual balance or easier rules. Balance, without resorting to cheese vs cheese play, is unachievable anyway, it's not 40k's strength. I personally prefer 3rd, 4th and 5th editions for this reason.
@@Gridash No, GW very specifically simplified the rules and removed many complexities and flavorful interactions to attract a new casual playerbase. Easier and simplified rules actually hurts the competitive scene by lowering the skill ceiling.
@@jacktalks5008 There is a reason you see the same 10 characters in every patch note in that game. Not to mention how we have instances where Riot simply doesn't know their own game. Such as the time they tried to nerf Galio by increasing his damage scaling, which increased his winrate instead.
Related to current 40k but not 10th specifically but it was a lot easier to know what each marine did what with the 3 squad types: Tactical Assault and Devastator. Now i gotta do a lot of digging just to learn what the Rectal Prolapser squad uses for weapons and if i have to attach a Chief Rectologis Primaris or a Chief Rectolgis Primaris _in Gravis armor_
if i were in charge of the model releases, i'd probably expand on the existing squads instead of this Gravis/Phobos shit. Terminators already do what Gravis does, and same for Scouts vs. Phobos. i would bring back Sniper Scouts instead of Eliminators, buff the Reivers because admittedly they do look cool, and make a Terminator squad with tons of big guns. then either make some faction-specific models or just work on a different army. and if GW says i have to add 50,000 different bolt rifles or armor variants to keep selling marines, i'll put them in the Horus Heresy instead of 40k.
You know shit is bad when even a fanboy like Valrak has something negative to say. As to why 10th, as always, it should have been obvious to everyone that paid attention the moment GW revealed the new gimicks of the edition, but as always, GW players tend to turn their brain off during the "hype season". (waning, this turned out to be a wall of text, but since this is a 1h video, I feel like it's appropriate). Let's racap what GW did with 10th: 1) Remove the Power Level system that was universally disliked... and make it now the only way to play the game. This meant making all the unit locked in size and all the gear free. Why did they do that? To "simplify the game". Did it archive its goal? Well it cut off elementary school level mathematic from the army building phase (adding the cost of each model in a unit + their gear to get the point cost of the unit was a daunting task apprently).... but in return it destroyed almost 40 years of lore and game balancing. You see, optional gear in 40k as always been about upgrade. A plasma pistol is almost ALWAYS better than a simple bolt pistol. A Power sword or Power fist is ALWAYS better than a simple chain sword. And you had to pay to get that power upgrade. Now that every gear is free, all that is out the window. This means that either all the gear are now, somehow sidegrade to eachothers with almost no real power difference, or they are just mendatory stuff you will always take because they are literally free. The end result of that change is: - In game: Every units roll around with at least 5 different weapon profile at all time, so you have to roll all these different weapons on every single units rather than just having your unit be a simple single loadout, with the occasional powerful ugrade thrown in there for some punctual spectacle. This grind the game to a painful and tedious grind. - During the army building phase, you can't really customize, specialize or pimp your guys in any ways. 37:00 Oh yeah, and there is also that "funny" little side effect now with every single big starter box full of monopose GW sell us while pretending its a discount: Since all these monopose kits don't have all the wargear options, it means they are literally "incomplete" units now. They are perfectly "legal" to play as, but you are just missing "free power boost" for no reason. And ofc since the "real" multipart kit doesn't have any spare, these units will FOREVER be incomplete. Did you like all thos "cheap gaunt" you got in Leviathan? Welp they are all missing the brand new couple of special weapon the real kit have. Could they have put these weapons on the monopose kit? Of course, it would have been the same for them, but they didn't. And while before that wouldn't have been that much of a big deal as you'd had to pay for tho upgrade weapon anyway, now it DO really matter. All that, just to save people the very difficult task of doing some very simple math, once, during the army creation process. 2) Deleting Psychic Phase. Yup, its gone and now every faction that ever had an affinity for the thing is just completely neuttered in term of flavor. 3) Rule stacking. I honestly have no idea how people can say with a straight face that 10th is "more simple and streamline" when now when you play every units have its own special rule, the added rule of their embed character (which are now the only defacto "paid gear option" present in the game), the faction rule and the detachement rule. Oh and let's not forget the stratagems too. I know you (and most people still playing 40k today) haven't know the era before 8th, but the game used to be way simpler. Your units have stats, their weapons have stats and... that's it. Some time there was basic generic rules bonus like bike, deepstrike and the like, but they were universal rules everyone had so the game was very simple to get. Now to play the game you have to know 5 different layers of special rules on top of the unit stats and weapons (which they have now always max loadout at all time). This is, unironically and without any hyperbole, the most bloated the game has ever been, which is quite a fit coming right after 9th which was the most bloated edition yet at the time. 4) The deletion of lore from the wargame. In a pathetic attempt to cater to the ultra minority of metasheep tournament players that jump from army to army to follow the flavor of the month, GW decided to remove any subfaction identity from the game, going as far as to give the divergent space marine chapters (the only surviving "subfaction" in the game that endured only for marketing reason) the same rules as the base marines + a bonus, because that way they would never be weaker than the base marine (obviously the sideboard effect that GW apparently didn't saw coming is the fact that as a result every divergent chapters is always better than the base marines at all time now). If you are someone that actually enjoy the lore and hobby aspect of the game (which is 99% of the playerbase) you just lost your subfaction identity and are now just supposed to "roleplay" it. "See guys, you can still play Valhalan, look there is a special detachment that is basically 100% what they used to be, but now everyone can take it and you can just switch to something else if the designers where too lazy to make it balanced and fun"... yay. It didn't make the game simpler, it just make it less committal for the people that would rather play the op thing of the weak than investing themselves into a lore and an army (yaknow, what wargame is supposed to be all about). 5) Detachment. Here's the truth here, the only reason this system was designed was to push more sales. Hear me out: In previous edition, when someone played an army, GW could kinda force sale on a specific unit by making it op, or by running to the ground the previous OP thing so people have to get a new one. With the new detachment rule, they can basically make you have to change 90% of your army with some simple nerf. "Oh you play that detachment that focus on that specific unit type ? Welp now that unit type is awful and so is the detachment, but look, this other detachment, that conveniently focus on a total different one! You are still playing your army! you just have to change 90% of the units in there, that's all!" Its an awful business decision, and it also completely dumb down the army building process (even more than the previous points have so far), turning every armies into a very limited set of super cookie cutter archetype with basically no wiggle room for you to express yourself. In the end, and I'm not saying that with any forme of hyperbole, this edition has been the worst 40k ever saw, and they have been releasing "the worst edition so far" since 6th in an unbroken chain of failure. Its just that since 8th GW is trying to turn 40k into a game its not (AoS) where before it was just suffering from very balancing problems.
I'd argue start of 8th with the indexes was the most balanced 40k has ever been, but it was very bland. And they slowly ruined it with bloat and power creep. Otherwise agree completely. I've played 5 editions of 40k and haven't even touched 10th for the reasons you mentioned.
Hi, owner of the Chainbreaker box here, the last Knight Christmas box. It held all of the knight options with the knight and armigers just fine but slightly bulged the box out if you didn't put it all back in right. So they're totally just ripping everyone off. As GW is known for.
Real talk, why is the “I can’t believe it’s not Karl Franz!” Celestant Prime from 2016 a better Sanguinor than the new Sanguinor? Were the 40K models actually tossed to the B-squad like people joke?
Get this the guys who made the nu-blood angels is the same sculptor who made the cities of sigmar and the Grombrindal celebration model. The issue is that they were give a more tighter guidelines to follow when it came down to the design team. So those models was designed on purpose and accepted by a corpo team rather than a design team
I fell out of the hobby for about a decade, from 2014ish until now, and it feels like I've emerged from centuries in a Fallout Vault. Obviously the game is basically unrecognisable mechanically, but also the modern 40k model range just seems very meh compared to the style of AoS minis released in the same period, so I'm glad it's not just me missing something with the new sculpts. But the biggest whiplash is that in less than a decade, the _bulk_ of the conversation I see about the 40k setting has shifted to being directly related to either the Heresy or the Primarchs. Imagine skipping forward to 2030 and finding everyone talking about the intricate life details and personalities of their favourite Old Ones, and speculating which one will get a model next, and you'd be about where I'm at. It's _wild._
It's so weird. HH was such a mistake. I got in back in 05 and man the discourse was somehow better. Not smarter. But more about the whole setting, not just one aspect that is honestly it's least interesting parts. I do NOT understand how anyone could get so into such a boring bit of the setting. Holy shit.
It’s times like these, I’m glad I obsessively follow lore and read the books, but don’t play and never have. I worked in a small gaming hut owned by a psycho tax evader who got shut down for lying on paper for over a decade, but while I was cashier I got to read every Warhammer book and I loved every second
@@apocako I don’t understand what you got from that at all 0.0 The guy was a raging alcoholic who would break things and he got shut down for tax evasion, not sure why you assumed I am some kinda bootlicker
@@apocakobuddy i dunno how else to say this but taxes are why roads exist in a functional state and how libraries are funded, they're literally the price we pay for living in a society.
I do agree with you on a lot of these points. They’re mostly the same thoughts I’ve had and a few of my friends who are in the hobby have as well. It’s why I’m kinda glad I’m way more into AoS tabletop than 40k. A lot of things in AoS feel flavorful to each faction, the core rules feel good as well. I know fantasy or AoS videos don’t do as well for you, but have you thought about looking at AoS 4.0 and seeing how it compares to 10th? I at least think that would be a fun comparison. Edit: Since you brought it up, Spearhead is fantastic. I’ve played it a few times, and it’s great.
GW doesn't balance for the casual player, but rather the small minority who play competitively, this is what led to what we have now. If you want fun, the better way to look is Horus Heresy
The 'just play Horus Heresy bro' argument doesn't work for people who don't like the Imperium or who don't like the Horus Heresy as a setting. I shouldn't have to choose between shit rules but setting I like versus good rules but setting I dislike.
@@Calvin_Coolagei was talking to a few people at my lgs and this topic actually came up and the point we all agreed on was this bevause its either Play with bland rules Play with only imperium stuff Or Convince people to allow the fan rules that people made for each faction whilst also making sure those rules were balanced
GW simplified the rules and shit for the casual player, hence the lack of flavor. GW also balanced for competitive players which compounded the problem. Despite these 2 drawbacks the positive outcome is obvious. 40k is the easiest to get into its ever been and its also the most balanced its ever been.
@@Calvin_Coolageplay an older version of 40k? Homebrew your own rules for other factions in Horus heresy. Play one page rules. Stop buying things from GW so you don’t contribute to the problem you are dealing with.
I think what absolutely warded me off from ever really playing tabletop is kinda just the disdain GW has for their very loyal fanbase and customers. I dont want to play a game that actually makes you build a physical model and then changes rules to make that mini illegal to play. Everything feels like give me $50 for every single little thing, everything is so expensive already and then they make you rebuy things and discontinue things you like and i have to think intentionally jack the new products price up. Why would i want to play a game that financially punishes me for being invested in the game?
Im starting a Tyranid army, mainly to collect and paint but i am planning to collect all the older codexes eventually, so if i do get into the occasional game can be able to play the older editions. Also you dont have to use 40K models only for 40K, you can use them in other games especially in miniature agnostic games. So if you do get some models dont feel like your models are only able to be used in the current 40K edition or 40k as a whole.
There is this common misconception that you are forced to buy official GW models, paint them, use only non-legends rules, etc. It is a game, you can play it with pieces of cardboard and homebrew rules whenever you want to. This is not a videogame where the rules are hardcoded into the experience. If you and your opponent want to change the rules, not paint your armies, or use heavy proxies, then go for it. The game itself is practically free, its everything else about the hobby which costs a lot. (Official GW stores and most tournaments will not allow this, but if you're a casual who cares)
@@gs4011 I used to manage a game shop, and I actively encouraged people to proxy in tourneys. As a game shop, we sell models regardless of what game they were intended for. So I wasnt going to be GW's gestapo and do their dirty work to prevent people from using the dollies that they like and bought and painted. As far as we were concerned, GW is just one more producer for our customers to buy, and nothing more. They are not "The Hobby".
I took one look at 10th and said nah, my friends agreed and we went back in time to the game as it was when we started playing. Bricky may hate 7th edition 40k, but we don't.
I'm sorry that happen to you bro. Same thing happen to me with GSC back in 9th. You should push check out One Page Rules, so you can play with the models you love without all the bad feels.
Entirely agree on all points, but a frothing mad raving agree on the pricing. I have a *mortgage,* dammit all. When even the bargain boxes offer terrible value, I'm just *out.* For the cost of a primaris LT and a squad of dudes, you can get a whole-ass game of Battletech for two people, rules included.
I can feel you on your army catching strays as I play unending swarm tyranids wich is now more so a ending swarm after we got nerfed with the replenishing stratagem and my flyrants ability to do free stratagems, plus then the newest nerf also got our detachment rule got nerf from surge moves being once a phase its rough
Thing that irks me most about primaris is the lack of customisability. Most of the models are great and the new mk 10 is cool, I even prefer the helmet to the mk 7 (hot take i know). However it feels so lame that these cool new marines all have to be fielded with the same type of armour in the same types of squads with the same types of weapons, completely distinct and separate from all the previous squad types. Like sure a squad of 10 intercessors looks uniform and consistent, but the fact that I can build a tactical squad with marines using ANY of the previous 8 marks of power armour and flourishes PLUS having the additional wargear options just adds so much opportunity for making them "your guys". I care _leagues_ more for the random veteran marine I would kitbash with mk4 legs, mk7 torso, a mk3 helmet and a mk8 backpack with a heresy era flamer and a melta bomb strapped to his hip than yet another tacticus marine, but oh look this one has a slightly different bolt rifle and helmet decoration. It sucks even more bc the most you can change in a primaris marine are the helmet and backpack which is still not enough to get rid of that samey silhouette they all have. Honestly marines feel more uniform and bland than guardsmen do in this edition. Thank Nurgle, I main death guard so I can still kitbash my horrid marines to be as weird and demented as possible.
The only real ways to make the primaris more chapter unique is to use the chapter customization upgrade pack (that is going to be hella expensive to do for all the guys) or to do heavy kitbashing/conversion which to a good amount of players isnt worth the trouble for it.
Oh no, not the 3rd strike being balanced argument. Makoto and urien can one touch you. It’s a game that people are still innovating now, it’s by no means even, it’s just that it’s crazy and it increases your one chance potential at the high end if you get a good read on a parry. It rewards the player more so than the character…. Except 12… poor 12
Started up 30k and because I found 40k to be a drag. Found the community to be way more Have a Fun game then WAAC that 40k seems to be more of. Also the starter box is a massive amount of plastic models that was a surprise coming from 40k boxes.
@reginlief1 With some small tweaks to 7th rule i have seen games with orks work well. Only saw other tables trying it but they all said they had a good time on both sides.
The heresy is such a dull setting, there are so many interesting wars like the one against the machines or the false primarch or whatever but no marine vs marine Horrible
I don't play the tabletop but I have a friend who plays the tabletop and plays Mechanicus, and its constant losses with him and I wonder how the heck they've been consistently bad from when I first saw him play it in late 2022. Again I can't stress enough that I know next to nothing about the game, I tried playing a game and was overwhelmed by all the rules and stuff involved with just attacking.
Try One Page Rules- Grimdark Future. Its much lighter rules set, literally one page, and its quick and fun. And its made so you can play with any army you want
GW, much like many "modern" companies, lacks creativity while wanting to maximize profits. Erase 80% of your characters and factions' uniqueness inorder to force everyone to buy the same 5 kits multiple times. Close numerous model production lines and decrease your cost of operation. On the same hand you increase sales on basic and inexpensive model kits. For GW it is a win-win and this is even including the 3D printer models that folks will use. They've traded the heart of their game and loyalty of their players for a quick buck.
No one brings up the idea of people who just want to collect the figures and dont play. I'd love a lore accurate army display of the minis but thats like 1000$ when like half of it would the same base mold, but now there is also no variety in the accessories meaning no personal touches to your armies. I think its why kitbashing and homebrewing is popular cause you can create actual detail and flavor to the individual in the army.
If GW is not going to sell old models, they should sell the old models as like stls. Let those who want to run the old models 3d print them themselves. Also please please please GW I will sell you my first, second and third born children and my soul if you just do free online rules and make the codex books into lore/art/painting guide books. The rules change waaaaay too often now to justify buying a codex that is 50-75% datasheets and rules that are out of date as soon as they come out
This is why when I want to play a fluffy fun game I play a older edition(either 7th or 8th) and when I want to play a quick and simple game i just use my GW stuff in OPR(firefight mostly). I love the setting but dislike the way things have been going for a while.
For Genestealer Cults I find it kinda wild how they have so many character units yet literally none of them are a named character in lore. I get why there isn't but like still that's kinda nutty, especially since more recent lore with them have been focusing a bit more on how Cultists do sometimes escape Tyranid invasions and hop from planet to planet.
The thing with gw’s prices with miniatures, when you compare it to other miniatures for non gw products, the pricing difference is just insane. They are well sculpted and from a particular ip sure, that incentives a bit of a premium. but not a 500% premium. I can buy nice looking napoleonic or medieval miniatures in 28mm for like 40 US bucks for 40 human sized models. And thats not me cherrypicking for the cheapest off brand models either. Im talking perry minatures, which are considered almost name brand for their reputation, and thats 1 model for 1 dollar price. I could get 60 minis for 30 bucks EASY with less prestigious/sales price. You just cant justify GW’s prices in terms of production costs and amount of plastic. They charge this much because somehow people are willing to pay for it for the brand name.
i know its seen as a taboo, but just look at the prices of recast minis. a recast 3 man squad of eradicators is like half the cost of a recast 10 man box of intercessors because it uses less material. but gw prices it based on idk what and they are roughly the same price. you arent paying for plastic youre paying to win and paying for the brand. i have no idea how they decide some of these prices but the cost to manufacture plastic is not that much.
100% honestly, I feel like Arthur reached into my head specifically to make this video, unhealthy parasocial shit aside, I haven't even been keeping up with 40k even casually, I bailed when GW went after TTS/the 40k animation community and Ive been trying to psychologically manipulate my friends into getting into One Page Rules and Ive just generally been looking into any wargame thats not GW
I’ve never seen a franchise more at odds with their customer base. I read the lore a lot and consider every now and then starting a table top army but then my favorite lore channels (like this one) drop a hour or multi hour video trashing the state of it. Tisk Tisk games-workshop
I haven't purchased minis since 94 ~ 95. Are you telling me that they're no longer pewter! I kid... sort of. You are also very fortunate to be able to share this with your dad.
GWs biggest problem is the customer base. It's super unkind to say but it's absolutely true. We as a community accept the nonsense. I have seen people defending blatantly unethical actions and there in-lies the issue. All of these problems stem from acceptance. Especially the rules stuff.
100% That is not to say that we aren't also victims. But in a society that thinks being manipulated is actual informed consent (FOMO being merely one prime example), it is easy to point the blame at ourselves (and we do indeed share blame for just how utterly fucking stupid we are) when the real monster is the "business just doing capitalist things without any restrictions".
My biggest problem with 10nth edition is that GW sanded off all the flavor but there’s still a lot in game complexity. I can’t run my battlesuit commander anymore, I run a battlesuit commander. I can’t run my sept. I run a detachment. However I still have to calculate what roll to wound every time. I still have to keep track of how many objectives my opponent is holding or might hold so I can score enough to so they won’t get too far ahead. I still have measure to make sure deep strike units won’t hit my back line. It’s all of the work, but none of the fun.
24:10 thats the reason i stopped collecting knights back in 9th: my buddies that i played with regularly didnt have any good solutions to deal with them, and every game turned into a steamroll that wasnt fun for any party, so i swapped to playing different marine chapters to keep things interesting until i settled on a rg successor
I had the opposite issue with knights. No obsec made the game pointless. I could nearly wipe my opponent but I'd almost always lose because I couldn't fucking SCORE THE STUPID GODDAMN POINTS. Fuck obsec.
16:52 As a Kill Team player. These price hikes are also a major killer for the hobby and game. It's supposed to be a cheap way to get a team at $65-70 at most. $80 for the newer teams that were previously combo locked is beyond absurd! Keep the entry point around $60!
I know that. But people who are getting into Kill Team will probably not know that. Am I against printing? No. Your argument also can be used for people who play the base 40k system. Some stuff for 3rd party GSC is about $20 compared to GW's $60.
"But people who are getting into Kill Team will probably not know that." Which is why I said I hope people realize that they can get cheap killteams. I want knowledge of commissioned 3d printing to become very popular so even new players know about it "Your argument also can be used for people who play the base 40k system." Yeah, you can get a full custodes army for like sub 100$ from certain people its insane.
I keep getting jumpscared by the omori music. The voices never leave me (As a newcomer to tabletop, 10th was hard but understandable to get through. If I had to factor in wargear costs like on 9th I might explode but I can understand why 10th isn't everyone's cup of tea)
On the topic of street fighter, I remember hearing someone say once that it can be fun to have underpowered characters because "if your opponent beats you with Dan Hibiki you can't claim they were using an overpowered character, they beat you because they're just better than you."
When the kroot update destroyed the army I just spent one billion dollars on, and spent hours and hours building and painting, before I even got to play them...... I cried..... and I'm not joking lol
This is pretty much why I dropped GW and switched over to One Page Rules' "Grimdark Future". Good enough rules set that scratches the itch for pushing some dudes around the board and rolling some dice. They are also not trying to discontenue factions since it is miniature agnostic AND can have custom army books made with their army creator that lets you know if the units created are balanced.
You mentioned that high-end 3d printers are $700, but I would just like to note that my saturn 2 was $200 on ebay and is perfect for everything I do. It is less money to buy a high-end printer than to buy a combat patrol and a box of infantry. If you have a safe place to print, just get the printer.
I found a photon mono 2 refurbished on sale for under 100$. People are not caught up with 3d printer tech advancement, it is significantly cheaper and easier than people think.

It reminds me the saying of "would GW rather sell one kit for $100 or two kits for $60?"
Agreed, GW sells what people are willing to buy unfortunately. The reason GW can get away with such absurd prices is because people allow it and also because people are not aware of cheap alternatives like 3d printing, recast, or simple proxying.
...got a link to a writeup of your findings? If only so I can share it so people can get madder at it.

GW is the epitomy of "Who cares they'll buy it"
Nah, thats pokemon.
Valrak culture. Everything new is GlOriUs dont think just buy!!!!
Laughs in Lego
The reason about the abundence of 3 men squads is that GW can charge the same with less amount of models in the box. Current dollar per point ratio is straight out absurd. An indivigual sanguinary guard mini is worth 20 fucking dollars, and GW models are not that big either so you are paying essentially between %500-%1000 the value of the expenses and material that is required to make them. Skulpts are not bad but damn, it does not justify that much money, getting a 3d printer is actually more cost effective now if you wanna start an army from scratch because every unit is so expensive.
this also why theres so many single model infantry character models being released instead of a real worthwhile expansion of a faction's unit roster
The CNC machines making the moulds aren’t gonna cost much more for working a bit longer and plastic is so cheap that they are already upselling the shit out of it to us before
God bless my 3D printer
@@kutkuknightyou know what isn't cheap? Developing a new sprue. That stuff is by far the largest cost when making 40k kits

This is why ive switched to HH

Is it more expencive? ehh up to what you play
Is alot of the factions blocked behind forgeworld...yes
@@ExternalDialoguethis is the best way to explain, primaris are clearly better models. But lack soul. Which sums up GW perfectly

This. If I ever played the tabletop, all my Primaris would be getting helmets taken from upgrade sprews or Horus Heresy
Holy shit I talked about this on a discord server once and was starting to think I was going insane because they were arguing that the mark 10 helms and new sanguinary guard are better because they're "more reasonable"
This whole video and comment section is so vindicating, the old mark 7 aquila helm is so much cooler than the primaris helms, primaris just lacks that sheer, unbridled contempt that the 7 had
IIRC there were originally plans to move a lot of heresy Mechanicum stuff to 40k, but that seems to have been dropped, and it has been decided that admech is just not getting those units (which sucks, because heresy mechanicum is what you would expect admech to look like+play)
If you look at Horus Heresy, Mechanicum there is, well, Admech. Legio Cybernetica, a great mix of various Ordos and so on. -
HQs and some elites are tech priests - that get psyker like powers such as cybertheurgy
Then you have automata, which are various large robots, some even being what I would call centerpiece-ish, that get buffed by tech priests
And in the middle, cyborg abominations that look less sleek than skitaari.
@@kalotheprogram8034 Heresy rules sadly dont translate easily to 10ed. Especially as far as vehicles go
I enjoy the Skitarri a great deal, more than the priesthood. That being said, why the fuck are none of the various AdMech colleges/doctrine NOT represented in the models as kit options? Every priest looks way too similar to another.

Just love the minis and lore.
As for new space marines, I ❤️ the Primaris. I had been making terrible attempts at truescale marines and this was the scratch I always needed.

Not one bit.

They don’t. It’s rumored they often ignore their play testers.
The sisters of battle launch box wasnt a maliciius decision, it was genuine incompetence as it was clearly meant to be released during 7th edition where the squads made sense as in 8th ed they changed so many things it just didnt
10th edition would be 200x better if the Horus Heresy rules team gave some pointers.
wouldnt mind if the aos modeling team helped out a bit too
So basically role back a few editions then

The tournament scene is honestly one of the worst things to happen to this hobby.

Is a Proctologist Dreadnaught the centerpeice?
if i were in charge of the model releases, i'd probably expand on the existing squads instead of this Gravis/Phobos shit.
The new sanguinor just looks like saint celestine put on weight after a bad break-up
You know shit is bad when even a fanboy like Valrak has something negative to say.
Let's racap what GW did with 10th:
1) Remove the Power Level system that was universally disliked... and make it now the only way to play the game.
The end result of that change is:
- In game: Every units roll around with at least 5 different weapon profile at all time, so you have to roll all these different weapons on every single units rather than just having your unit be a simple single loadout, with the occasional powerful ugrade thrown in there for some punctual spectacle.
This grind the game to a painful and tedious grind.
- During the army building phase, you can't really customize, specialize or pimp your guys in any ways.
37:00 Oh yeah, and there is also that "funny" little side effect now with every single big starter box full of monopose GW sell us while pretending its a discount:
Since all these monopose kits don't have all the wargear options, it means they are literally "incomplete" units now.
You are still playing your army! you just have to change 90% of the units in there, that's all!"
Its an awful business decision, and it also completely dumb down the army building process (even more than the previous points have so far), turning every armies into a very limited set of super cookie cutter archetype with basically no wiggle room for you to express yourself.
I agree with every aspect of this video. "GET OUT OF MY MIND CHARLES!"
4:03 NO MR. BONES 40K DON'T ABBREVIATE COMBAT POINTS NOOOOOO
GW simplified the rules and shit for the casual player, hence the lack of flavor. GW also balanced for competitive players which compounded the problem.

For Genestealer Cults I find it kinda wild how they have so many character units yet literally none of them are a named character in lore.

I hope Mr Bones' friends let him play the pre-nerf version of his kroot
I’ve never seen a franchise more at odds with their customer base. I read the lore a lot and consider every now and then starting a table top army but then my favorite lore channels (like this one) drop a hour or multi hour video trashing the state of it. Tisk Tisk games-workshop
It’s still a fun game, it’s just not as fun as it used to be. And kills your wallet.
Simply 3d print and pirate the rules :3
@@mysteriousstranger5873 seems like a good idea
I haven't purchased minis since 94 ~ 95. Are you telling me that they're no longer pewter! I kid... sort of. You are also very fortunate to be able to share this with your dad.
me and my friends have just been playing 9th.
31:46 Guardians £37. 10 models, loads of options, extra weapons and heads etc.
Rangers £40. 5 models, no options, a few heads.
What?!
GWs biggest problem is the customer base. It's super unkind to say but it's absolutely true. We as a community accept the nonsense. I have seen people defending blatantly unethical actions and there in-lies the issue.
All of these problems stem from acceptance. Especially the rules stuff.
100%
That is not to say that we aren't also victims. But in a society that thinks being manipulated is actual informed consent (FOMO being merely one prime example), it is easy to point the blame at ourselves (and we do indeed share blame for just how utterly fucking stupid we are) when the real monster is the "business just doing capitalist things without any restrictions".
This video is very vindicating, especially the part about the mark 7 aquila helmets being more iconic than the mark 10

Oh boy, a meme in Portuguese
This video's gonna be peak
Fuck obsec.
42:18 Yeah, I think they've lost a lot of good faith when they gobbled up all the fan animators only to churn out middling animation slop on WH+.

As a Kill Team player. These price hikes are also a major killer for the hobby and game. It's supposed to be a cheap way to get a team at $65-70 at most. $80 for the newer teams that were previously combo locked is beyond absurd! Keep the entry point around $60!
I'm hoping all these people complaining about prices soon realize you can commission a printed kill team for like 10$
I know that. But people who are getting into Kill Team will probably not know that.
Am I against printing? No.
Your argument also can be used for people who play the base 40k system. Some stuff for 3rd party GSC is about $20 compared to GW's $60.
"But people who are getting into Kill Team will probably not know that."
Which is why I said I hope people realize that they can get cheap killteams. I want knowledge of commissioned 3d printing to become very popular so even new players know about it
"Your argument also can be used for people who play the base 40k system."
Yeah, you can get a full custodes army for like sub 100$ from certain people its insane.
this is why i collect minies not based on their game appeal but on how pretty they are and avoid the game completely
I keep getting jumpscared by the omori music. The voices never leave me
(As a newcomer to tabletop, 10th was hard but understandable to get through. If I had to factor in wargear costs like on 9th I might explode but I can understand why 10th isn't everyone's cup of tea)
I heardyou talking about that capitan free strat skill, and the "lone op-ish" strat and I was... oooh man. I can see where this is going.
On the topic of street fighter, I remember hearing someone say once that it can be fun to have underpowered characters because "if your opponent beats you with Dan Hibiki you can't claim they were using an overpowered character, they beat you because they're just better than you."
Same as with Ganondorf in smash. If you lose to the DORF, it's on you.
"what if they made Mega Guardians"
You mean the Primaris Marines? Guilliman stole all our Aspect Warriors.
I have returned from beyond the void to request once more a video on House Hawkshroud of the Imperial Knights
When the kroot update destroyed the army I just spent one billion dollars on, and spent hours and hours building and painting, before I even got to play them...... I cried..... and I'm not joking lol
Remember, GW wants product separation. Angelic wings now belong to AOS
GW: if you want wings on your primaris marines, buy the AOS kit that has them to kitbash!
If you have a safe place to print, just get the printer.
i really want to 3d print with resin but my place doesnt have a suitable place for it.
I found a photon mono 2 refurbished on sale for under 100$. People are not caught up with 3d printer tech advancement, it is significantly cheaper and easier than people think.
@@B1-997 I live in a small apartment and I got a grow tent and an inline fan. I can vent the toxic fumes outside of my apartment window. I recommend joining a wh40k 3d printing community to ask more questions and find out about how you can safely print in smaller areas.
I've been looking at the kroot for the longest time and I've only played 2 games of 9th in my life. Hearing your enjoyment at how they played before nerfs made me so excited and had me thinking of all I could do. Then the reveal utterly crushed my soul. That sucks so much...
28:16 through 28:28:
That’s what I’ve been thinking for years!
I blame the lawyers bc that's what happens when there incharge of a company
I jumped off GeeDubs wild ride when 9th came out. I mostly just play historicals now.
Same, I need to find some good 25mm historicals. Most of what I play are 15mm and I just don’t enjoy painting them as much.
@@Dram1984 look into bolt action. It’s the biggest WW2 game out there. My LGS is also working on a WW1 game I help test play sometimes, but it’s not finished yet. There’s also chain of command, along with at least a dozen other games.
One mention of Age of Sigmar.
Stormcast Eternals video requested.
Legit stormcast prosecutors are better sanguinery guard then the guard they released.
As a fantasy/AoS guy it’s been really funny watching the Stormcasts evolve from the sigmarines to space marines but better. You’re legit better off kitbashing your own Sanguinor and Sanguinery Guard from space marine and Stormcast pieces than you are buying the new models.
Congrats on your old man showing up for you. Please enjoy it for those of us who can’t. Great video well done on 100k keep it up brother🤘
I would like more casual/silly/fun rules to play.
They exist. In other games. Other games which you can use your 40k dollies in. Apparently other games is some huge secret.
