      Don’t mind me saying, but Lynyrd Skynyrd performance at Knebworth in 1976 is even BETTER than this (if you could believe that), it is on TH-cam. Allen Collins performance is INSANE on lead guitar.

      I could argue, but it's definitely a top 5 solo.

    These guys were drilled for 3 or 4 years by the lead singer in a sweltering shack in a north Florida swamp, sun up to sun down, and all that sweat and dedication manifested itself in performances like this right up until October 20, 1977.

    Most people don't know this but Billy Powell was a classical trained pianist

    • @tuesdaysgone6736
      @tuesdaysgone6736 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He started with band being a roadie, and one night after the gig, while it was raining, they waited for the rain to pass, so they could load equipment, there was a piano on site and he said ''this is how i would play Freebird.'' they fired him on the spot from the roadie gig.......... And the rest is history.

    • @2HRTS1LOVE
      @2HRTS1LOVE 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Gary said they had to break some of that training out of him, telling him to just bang on the keys, trying to get a more rock/blues sound, because Billy played so technically correct. It worked! Freebird is all about the guitars but it wouldn't be the same without that piano.

    Try Skynyrd at the Knebworth festival. The Stones had a tongue shaped ramp at the front of the stage and asked them not to go down it. During Free Bird Ronnie Van Zant sent the guitarists down the ramp for the solo portion. NOBODY told Skynyrd what to do.

      I grew up in South East London and moved 12 miles away to be within 1/2 mile from the edge of London and used to love this. I bitterly regret not joining my mates at The Knebworth Festival when these boys blew my English bands away and The Rolling Stones would not follow them for 4 hours afterwards until the energy generated died down. Normally I am 100% for all things English but have to admit THe Southern Boys came out well on top here. This audience was more expressive than the initially quieter Knebworth one until the boys really started rocking.Good Luck. It's 2.30am and I am off to bed ...lol

A bunch of morons claiming it as there own, when the flag comes from a background of American Revolution for completely different causes doesn't Automatically make it racist. Of all the musicians on the stage, only two are still alive today... Gary Rossington guitarist, and Artimus Pyle drummer. We recently also lost founding member, guitarist Ed King, who had left the band prior to this. One of the most talented, yet tragic bands in music history. They've made some of the most timeless music ever recorded, but they've also suffered so much loss and heartache. Surely, you know about the plane crash in October 1977, that claimed 4 lives, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, at age 29, guitarist Steve Gaines 28 and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines, age 29... as well as a member of their staff.

    That was kickass!! This is the music of my youth and whenever we would put Gold and Platinum on the turntable it was usually a long while before it got taken off again. Great to see Steve up there jammin' with the fellas, he and the rest are still sorely missed. Wonderful reaction Truant. Thanks!

    This is how good Skynyrd really was. They opened for the Stones in England at a similar outdoor concert. And when the Stone took the stage, they were unable to start because the crowd was still screaming at the top of their lungs for more Skynyrd. Now, how many bands have ever done that?

    Yes my friend those were some jamming concerts I was 16 years old at this time and had seen Skynyrd a year before. And yes those chicks were some good Lays

    Parents were at this concert . I've Seen Skynyrd 6x live 4 of them being in the early and mid 90's so I got to see at least half of the original band...they put on amazing concert. Half of the original band died in a plane crash , and his younger brother Johnny Vanzant is the lead vocals , the only original band member left is guitarist Gary Rossington.

    Hey brother, love your reactions. Looking for another oldie but goodie, check out Deep Purple's Child in Time. In my opinion it's just as epic as Free Bird, just not as long. Love ya brother and keep rockin'!!

    • @jtgoheels
      @jtgoheels 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's actually longer. the original Free Bird clocks in just over 9 minutes, and Child in Time is an 11 minute classic. Deep Purple has always been one of my favorite bands.

    The core of the band had been paying their dues in juke joints all over the southeastern US before Kooper approached them in Atlanta. Their stage sound was a function of hard, hard work- the real deal. That is why is still hits. Van Zant, Collins, Rossington et al paid the price in real coin. Free Bird was the way the sprinted into the finish- full on, balls out. Real deal.

    There is a great story of how Allen Collins (ending guitar soloist) became a member of the band. He was in his yard one afternoon when he saw Ronnie van Zant and Bob Burns heading toward his house in their car. Ronnie and Bob were well-known as the two worst badasses around Jacksonville at the time, and nobody wanted to get into it with them. Allen panicked thinking they were looking for a fight and headed off down the street running with Ronnie and Bob in hot pursuit yelling at Allen to stop. Allen grabbed a bike from a neighbour's house and made it a few doors farther down where he ditched the bike and started shinnying up a tree. Ronnie and Bob stopped, got out of the car and spent some time trying to "sweet-talk" Allen down out of the tree. Turns out they just came by to ask him to join the band.
