- Dutch West Indies 1630-1975 Part I: The Dutch West India Company
Dutch trading posts and plantations in the Americas precede the much wider known colonisation activities of the Dutch in Asia. Whereas the first Dutch fort in Asia was built in 1600 (in present-day Indonesia), the first forts and settlements on the Essequibo river in Guyana and on the Amazon date from the 1590s. Actual colonization, with Dutch settling in the new lands, was not as common as with other European nations. Many of the Dutch settlements were lost or abandoned by the end of that century, but the Netherlands managed to retain possession of Suriname until it gained independence in 1975, as well as the former Netherlands Antilles, of which the islands remain within the Kingdom of the Netherlands today.

Fascinating documentary, especially since most early history in the USA is taught from the British standpoint. I have an ancestor from Niew Amsterday ca. 1640 named Andries Andriessen, who sailed up the Hudson River, NY to Albany (Fort Orange back then) trading with the two towns and the Indians. I especially appreciate you naming of the portraits - so many times you never know who all these people were. Thanks so much for posting this!

thanks for the great documentaries, but I agree with some watchers commenting on the "WHITE ON WHITE" subtitle/written narration problem. I hope you can change to a different colour or else place a black bar as a background for the subtitles---although this would cover much of the great images.
Very well produced video, but at 07:24 there's a little mistake: northeastern Brazil not northwestern...

Interesting story but jumps around too much. 1600's , 1800's , 1600's then 1700's. Also, white subtitles on white backgrounds is a bit dodgy.
How did the Dutch seize Suriname after the Treaty of Breda from the British when they were given it in exchange for Manhattan????
So, The Dutch Indie Company traded New Amsterdam (New York) to the British in exchange for Suriname in a peace treaty (they lost the war). Originally the company went south around Africa to collect/distribute spices and slaves before the big military powers pushed them out of land control. All they could do in Africa was raid for slaves and bring them to the American colonies so they did and claimed most of what is now the State of New York. Until they were pushed out by big military power, the British. So they gave up land claim and continued selling slaves to the colonies which they got from Africa and South America. They were then pushed out of South America by big military, the British, again. But they got some revenge by funding the Vanderbilt's and the American Revolution, paying for the commodore to ship soldiers up and down the Hudson Bay. All paid for by the slave trade. Very interesting times.

Ik heb heel veel moeite met geluid toevoegen bij de filmpjes die niet gedempt worden door TH-cam, ik dacht ik zet er wat mooie tribal music achter van Ghanesen, nu ben ik niet helemaal op de hoogte van alle stammen en hun geschiedenis. Wel weet ik doordat Roué Verveer op zoek was naar zijn bloedlijn, hij blijkbaar ook afstamt van de Ashanti ( zijn voorvader was door de eigen familie verkocht) De Ashanti hebben tegenwoordig een heel slecht aanzien wat die Ghanese vrouw vertelde.

Die Forten conflict tussen portugezen en nederlanders, speelt ook af in Ghana, Elmina Grote rol voor Suriname, Curacao, Jamaica ,Guyana, Trinidad Tobago etc

Nice documentary. Quite accurate. But the text being only white, no dark shadow is sometimes unreadable. It would be great if the maker of the documentary had an English speaking person read the text.

Ja Roue Verveer is daar een van! er zijn vele surinamers met ghanees bloed. Ashanti en fanti zijn de echte oorspronkelijke ghanese, , en de fanti's denken zo van wat jullie vroeger hebben gedaan met de handel in goud en slaven dat kan echt niet, door dat is het gekomen, bedoelt die vrouw zeker.
