Nine Sols has the best 1st and final boss in any Metroidvanias I can remember. Both of them grab you and tell a message: 1st boss: Hey, you better learn how to parry and use your Qi attack. Final boss: Hey, do you feel powerful? Now show me perfection. Outstanding game. For me, in the top tier with Blasphemous 2 and Hollow Knight.
The only issue I have with Nine Sols is that the difficulty seemed really back loaded. Nothing in the game compares to the stomping the final boss delivers. Everything before her, you could get by with using dash and double jumps. I just wish the pacing in the middle in terms of challenge was better. Still a phenomenal game.
Heresy! The music in Mummy Demastered is so good! The biggest challenge in the game is getting past the title screen cause the music is so good, you dont wanna push start!
I'm happy that you have reconsidered placement for Guacamelee. I haven't played the second one, but I have fond memories of the first one. I really enjoyed the Viewtiful Joe like combat on this one.
My thing is their is a thing as sub genra. Games can have metroidvania elements but their main genre is something else. Like as an example Metroid Dread is more action adventure, but it has Metroidvania elements.

What I like about your list is your B tier is controversial to the general public view/ score but actually in line with what a view a B tier Metrodvania is, for example, both Ori 1 and 2 and Metroid Dread, which are both critically acclaimed games. To me , both of them deserves a B tier only , either due to lack of combat depth/ variety or meh collectables/ upgrades/ map. But i do have to argue Blasphemous 2 is better than Blasphemous 1 in every ways though. Blasphemous 1 traversals tools are just terrible for a Metrodvania game, and instant death pitfall is such a lazy and tedious design. I gotta try Biomorph then , first time seeing ppl putting it on high tier.
Definitely try Biomorph. It’s very good. One day I’ll reassess the Blasphemous games. For me, B2 is superior in Combat and Abilities/Platforming, while B1 is superior in all other categories.

The main thing I think makes B1 stand out is that it’s not an MV on its critical path; however, if you play the game while thinking out of the box, it becomes an MV with hidden layers. I appreciate your well thought-out criticisms, as it's clear that you really play these games and give this a lot of real consideration. I generally find myself enjoying games and rating them similarly, except for one- Ender Lilies. I bought it really just from your high praise, but I just don't get what's really special about it. I'm even a daddy to a little girl, but it just hasn't connected with me at all. It's slow, enemies take a lot of hits, attack animations feel sluggish and stiff, and the visuals feel pretty drab with a lot of detail being obscured by darkness. The generic glowing orbs for power-ups and movement make it feel like random Unity engine game #5384. The map even stinks with boxes and lines. I haven't finished it yet, and I sure hope it gets better, but for the life of me I don't get the hype at all so far.
Yeah, that map is 100% trash 😆 Here’s the answer to making the game better: Don’t use the Umbral Knight. Use Gerrod. Gerrod makes every enemy and most bosses a joke. He’s slow, but his hits are both devastating and satisfying. If that doesn’t work, then the game might not be for you. And that’s okay. I do hope you end up enjoying it.
I always get so hype for a few seconds when I see Rabi Ribi at the bottom of the day's list before remembering how you're memeing it. It's my fav all-time metroidvania and even though I'm not sure if you're memeing it out of love or hate, I'm style soooooooo hyped for when you do get around to it in one of these videos, no matter how hard you go on it. And I can't get behind Dread either. I'd even go as far as to put it in high D tier. It'd be low B without the Emmis. When you said "this is the greatest travesty" and hovered over Tevi for a second I'll admit I got a bit excited. With my love for Rabi Ribi you know what direction I wanted that to move.
I love your videos, just a little suggestion. Let people know if the game you are talking about or every one really is on all consoles and if it has a physical release or not. I’m a huge physical enthusiast and knowing which game is physically or not makes me wanna try it or not. But just a simple suggestion. I'm one of those fans of Aertena Noctis... I loved it. Love the challenge of the platforming and the bosses.. so much exploration. One of my all time fave MV's.. I'm really looking forward to the sequel coming soon.
Yeah just watched another reviewer putting 9 Souls in their C tier equivalent, just because it was too Narrative focused. They basically said a lot of what was established by dialogue could be established without it. Same guy praised the corpse running mechanic in 9 souls, because it made the game challenging. That most Metroidvania's are too easy, were you just go back and just pick up your currency or XP, and their was no challenge to that. Now personally I agree with your take, over his, but its interesting how people can have two different takes from the same game.
I don't get the love for the Shantae games. That might just be preferences and taste, but as metroidvanias, they're not that great imo. Especially Pirate's Curse with the divided islands. It doesn't have that interconnected map, but more a kind of Zelda dungeons you never return to once you finish them.
I plan of replaying and reassessing every Shantae game soon. Now that my MV palate is more refined, I’d like to see how they withstand the test of time

Also after learning how you assess we have to point out that if you love a game but it is still raited how then do not forget that this is just an opinion you like/love what you want. I actually have a similar sentiment towards "Mummy Demastered" as you do, specifics aside anyway. Like, I did enjoy my time with it and I do consider it a well put together game, yet I don't feel that strongly about it. Not enough to consider it among my favorite 2D Action-Platformers even. Or heck, I barely even recall most of what happens in the game some months after playing it now. As you said, I do wonder if part of that came from the expectations going into it. I only tried the game out cause I heard that it was very good, so my expectations were probably set much higher than those of people who went into thinking it was a movie tie-in slop. Oh well, it's still something I'd gladly recommend to others if they are interested.
I just finished BLAST Brigade (vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread) and it has been, indeed, a blast! It's a high B for me. I didn't see it on your picker list, so maybe you'll get time to check this one out. Finished it on GoG, but it's also on Steam. Keep up the videos, thank you for them! You are correct on Dread, it doesn’t hook me and exploration is poor. Vigil is AMAZING- “A” tier for me. Noctis is HUGE and very similar to Afterimage imo. And hidden gem of gems that took me three times to pick it up and finally play it through…….Outbuddies DX. Just get through the first 3 to 5 hours and you’ll see what I mean, I couldn’t put it down! Amazing.
I kind of agree with you about corpse running but it's also "teaches" the player and makes the stakes way higher. If I stand to lose nothing when I die then where's the tension? Sure, different strokes for different folks but I have to agree about nine sols only because the difficulty is so ramped up and they want you to play in their style. Q

In your Google Document is Teslagrad 1 & 2 missing. I have buyed Teslagrad 2 two weeks ago, thats why i noticed. I really love your Videos and Metroidvania's. Because of your Videos i did find MV i missed like Astalon or Deaths Gambit.
Dread gotta be higher, man.. The boss fights and the upgrades.. Plus, something Dread did so well was feed the Speedrunning community, and that's a huge part of MV's In my opinion it is at least A You should play it again and do a minimum pickup run. That's a fun 2 hrs.
I should play it again, honestly. I’m not a speedrunner, so I don’t take that into consideration when assessing MVs, but you’re right. People love running MVs. The upgrades/abilities are good, but the collectibles aren’t and the exploration is very curated and boring. That’s what hurts it. You wanna say it’s a 9/10 or 10/10 game, I’m here for it. This list only measures its MV-ness.
@MetroidvaniaGuru yes I agree,the collectables for the sightly better ends is lame. But with all of samus adventures getting all her stuff is what makes her god like. Yes, that means energy tanks and too many missileupgrades, but that is what makes metroid what it is.. We know all of her tricks and upgrades so it's hard to add to that I feel. Samus is locked in in her design. But you are right it's your list, and it is very entertaining. It gets me through my work day and makes me want to play the games you talk about. (Again) And that sir I thank you.
I absolutely love the metroid series and I loved metroid dread (specifically the actual dread I felt when facing the EMMI) so it hurts my soul to see it shifted down. However I have to admit that I found it very linear and when they finally gave me the freedom to backtrack, I kinda didnt want to anymore...
I had so much more fun with Gato than Mummy. I'll never forget after I beat a Mummy boss (all the bosses in this game are extremely tanky by the way) I was treated to pretty much the same next screen as the prior biome. That made me turn it off for good. Definitely so incredibly generic, many of the rooms just blend together. C Tier for sure.
So I took a peak at your picker wheel list out of curiosity and is there a reason the metroid prime games aren't listed? (Although I can certainly understand not wanting to put other M on there)
I don’t think Mummy Demastered is that overrated anymore, at least in some circles. It may even officially be underrated. You’re definitely correct about how much the initial low expectations artificially boosted its appeal early on. But today, no one who’s playing it for the first time even remembers the awful movie the game was based on. They only know it as the game that so many TH-camrs praised, and so end up setting their expectations too high going in.
I am not upset; I rarely get upset about anything really. But I am surprised. I played Prince of Persia and Nine Sols back to back in a relatively short period of time. I loved both and I consider them both as my top 5 MODERN MVs. I noticed you put heavy emphasis on how much of an MV a game is while you are rating them. While Nine Sols is an amazing game, I think it is on the weaker side as an MV. I believe Prince of Persia is a better MV in term of exploration, locations, movement and especially platforming and the puzzle, oh god the puzzles etc. Nine Sols is what Sekiro would be in 2D. They put most of their chips into parry base combat system which is god tier. But interms of an MV it is currently sitting in my top 5, below Hollow Knight, Ori Will of the Wisps, Prince of Persia and Blasphemous.
Interesting discussion. I agree that Nine Sols hasn't the best exploration but its combat and narration are the best I've played in an MV. We have the same Top 5 but I have yet to play Ender Lilies et Death Gambit.
I’m with you; both games are excellent. I’d say our disagreement is just in what we value in Exploration. I ultimately found Nine Sols’s Exploration to be more rewarding. Moment-to-moment, thrilling, edge-of-your-seat combat; treasure chests with great loot, shortcuts, hidden areas, mini-bosses; exceptional path to an exceptional true ending. And despite the game being largely linear at points, Nine Sols is actually more open than people actually realize. It’s just very great at guiding players, another feather in its hat.
@@MetroidvaniaGuru fair enough we all have different tastes and likes. I loved both of them, I just got addicted to Sargon’s god tier parkour skills and platforming puzzles. I’ve just played Ender Lilies the first time btw. I loved it, you were not exaggerating. Nine Sols, it seems, completely has levelled me up though. I’ve beaten more than a couple of Ender Lilies’ bosses 2-3 tries and one or two of them in my first try, crazy. I am not a skilled gamer or anything. But playing it closely after Nine Sols most likely changed the meant to be experience of boss fights of Ender Lilies for me. I am guessing I was supposed to struggle a bit, git gud, then beat them and so on. Nine Sols’ bosses rules. I am quite enjoying your content btw, as currently I am on a MV streak, probably will go on about for another month or so. I appreciate your work; the time and effort, clearly, you put into it. I was really enjoying aeterna noctis until I got the teleport ability and that ruined the game for me. It’s so hard and clunky to use and the platforming is brutal.
Hello! I have good news for you! I have ended this series as I now place MVs on the tier list after reviews, but I will be wrapping it up with 4 more monthly episodes, starting in September. Afterimage will be placed on the tier list in November. It’s a ways away, but it’ll get in there 😊
Aeterna Noctis is S or at least A tier, It is flawed and extreme in some way but is the most ambitious and corageous metroidvania out there, not afraid to throw in your face the most complex, difficult and incredible solutions. The controls are perfect, the challenge is very high but there are two levels of difficulty with a lot of differences in design, so one can choose the experience he wants. I think it is not for everyone but it surely has all that a great metroidvania should have, so it deserves at least an A.
@@Ratovx Exactly, also because Ender Lilies is more on the soulslike side than a metroidvania. If the "perfect" metroidvania is Hollow Knight, or at least the archetype of the metroidvania by definition, Aeterna Noctis is a lot more similar to it (controls, precision, variety, ambition, bosses, platforming, ecc), even superior and more original in some way (the arrow teleport) than that simply good soulsvania game which is Ender Lilies.
Aeterna noctis do not buy for ps4 crashes your console so you have to do a hard reboot, Game just does not work devs know this but did nothing to correct the issues
Aeterna Noctis is top 2 Metroidvanias along with Hollow Knight. Don't agree with your main cons. The size and difficulty are what made me love it. Definitely not for casual gamers. I do agree with the background being too busy, although I got used to that after a while.

I played Aterna Noc on so called easy-mode, got to the 7th trial (white arena) and just gave up, instant delete.

A lot of people agree with you on the tension. For me, I find it punishing enough to send me back to a previous save.

I’m not a speedrunner, so I don’t take that into consideration when assessing MVs, but you’re right. People love running MVs.
The upgrades/abilities are good, but the collectibles aren’t and the exploration is very curated and boring. That’s what hurts it.
You wanna say it’s a 9/10 or 10/10 game, I’m here for it. This list only measures its MV-ness.

But with all of samus adventures getting all her stuff is what makes her god like.
Yes, that means energy tanks and too many missileupgrades, but that is what makes metroid what it is..
We know all of her tricks and upgrades so it's hard to add to that I feel.
Samus is locked in in her design.
But you are right it's your list, and it is very entertaining. It gets me through my work day and makes me want to play the games you talk about. (Again)

I absolutely love the metroid series and I loved metroid dread (specifically the actual dread I felt when facing the EMMI) so it hurts my soul to see it shifted down.
However I have to admit that I found it very linear and when they finally gave me the freedom to backtrack, I kinda didnt want to anymore...

I had so much more fun with Gato than Mummy. I'll never forget after I beat a Mummy boss (all the bosses in this game are extremely tanky by the way) I was treated to pretty much the same next screen as the prior biome. That made me turn it off for good. Definitely so incredibly generic, many of the rooms just blend together. C Tier for sure.

I’ve played both. Each game has their strengths, but I prefer Nine Sols.
I don’t think Mummy Demastered is that overrated anymore, at least in some circles. It may even officially be underrated. You’re definitely correct about how much the initial low expectations artificially boosted its appeal early on. But today, no one who’s playing it for the first time even remembers the awful movie the game was based on. They only know it as the game that so many TH-camrs praised, and so end up setting their expectations too high going in.
I think it is overrated. It was fun for a few hours but it left me cold after all the good reviews. More or less agree with Luke.
where's Aria of Sorrow? honestly it's either a Solid A or an S, to me the best of the Castlevania's Metroidvanias

I am not upset; I rarely get upset about anything really. But I am surprised.
I played Prince of Persia and Nine Sols back to back in a relatively short period of time.
I loved both and I consider them both as my top 5 MODERN MVs.
I noticed you put heavy emphasis on how much of an MV a game is while you are rating them.
While Nine Sols is an amazing game, I think it is on the weaker side as an MV. I believe Prince of Persia is a better MV in term of exploration, locations, movement and especially platforming and the puzzle, oh god the puzzles etc.
Nine Sols is what Sekiro would be in 2D. They put most of their chips into parry base combat system which is god tier. But interms of an MV it is currently sitting in my top 5, below Hollow Knight, Ori Will of the Wisps, Prince of Persia and Blasphemous.
Interesting discussion. I agree that Nine Sols hasn't the best exploration but its combat and narration are the best I've played in an MV. We have the same Top 5 but I have yet to play Ender Lilies et Death Gambit.
I’m with you; both games are excellent.
I’d say our disagreement is just in what we value in Exploration. I ultimately found Nine Sols’s Exploration to be more rewarding. Moment-to-moment, thrilling, edge-of-your-seat combat; treasure chests with great loot, shortcuts, hidden areas, mini-bosses; exceptional path to an exceptional true ending.
And despite the game being largely linear at points, Nine Sols is actually more open than people actually realize. It’s just very great at guiding players, another feather in its hat.
@@MetroidvaniaGuru fair enough we all have different tastes and likes. I loved both of them, I just got addicted to Sargon’s god tier parkour skills and platforming puzzles.
I’ve just played Ender Lilies the first time btw. I loved it, you were not exaggerating. Nine Sols, it seems, completely has levelled me up though. I’ve beaten more than a couple of Ender Lilies’ bosses 2-3 tries and one or two of them in my first try, crazy. I am not a skilled gamer or anything. But playing it closely after Nine Sols most likely changed the meant to be experience of boss fights of Ender Lilies for me. I am guessing I was supposed to struggle a bit, git gud, then beat them and so on. Nine Sols’ bosses rules.

I was really enjoying aeterna noctis until I got the teleport ability and that ruined the game for me. It’s so hard and clunky to use and the platforming is brutal.

Probably Aeterna Noctis. Cathedral is up there, too.
Aeterna Noctis is S or at least A tier, It is flawed and extreme in some way but is the most ambitious and corageous metroidvania out there, not afraid to throw in your face the most complex, difficult and incredible solutions. The controls are perfect, the challenge is very high but there are two levels of difficulty with a lot of differences in design, so one can choose the experience he wants. I think it is not for everyone but it surely has all that a great metroidvania should have, so it deserves at least an A.
Ender Lilies A and Aeterna in B is crazy to me.
Ender lilies is a good game, good visuals and all but its super generic with pretty meh bosses.
@@Ratovx Exactly, also because Ender Lilies is more on the soulslike side than a metroidvania. If the "perfect" metroidvania is Hollow Knight, or at least the archetype of the metroidvania by definition, Aeterna Noctis is a lot more similar to it (controls, precision, variety, ambition, bosses, platforming, ecc), even superior and more original in some way (the arrow teleport) than that simply good soulsvania game which is Ender Lilies.
Aeterna noctis do not buy for ps4 crashes your console so you have to do a hard reboot,
Game just does not work devs know this but did nothing to correct the issues

I loved Noctis on switch until I got to the final biome. The game crashed literally every time I entered the area so I had to DNF the game.

Aeterna Noctis is top 2 Metroidvanias along with Hollow Knight. Don't agree with your main cons. The size and difficulty are what made me love it. Definitely not for casual gamers. I do agree with the background being too busy, although I got used to that after a while.
I totally get why people would love its size and difficulty. I just don’t think either are what the average MV enthusiast would like.
HolllowKnight and Aeterna are metroidvanias for people that don’t actually like metroidvanias.
Damn, Aeterna Noctis is an easy S for me, but to each thier own, great list!
