    Thank you for this. I've been using OpenSUSE since 9.0 with a KDE desktop and I love it. I tried Ubuntu with Gnome almost 10 years ago and I didn't like it. I used to use a new version as my chance to wipe everything but now I've been doing zypper dup which I have to do soon. I weaned myself off Windows after WinXP although I do keep a licensed copy of the latest version "just in case" but I don't use it often.

    My first linux experience is openSuSE that I bought for 60 bucks at Compusa. It was running on 400 mhz amd athlon with 128 MB of ram and 10 GB of HDD. Learn a lot from it then went to Slackware linux with KDE. Now my main linux OS is Linux Mint which is now one of my favorite linux. That green color that openSuSE uses bring back so much memory though.

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's some kind of history!
      Since your early experience... There have been a couple ownership changes, the base code you were using was junked completely and re-written at the most basic level and there's hardly an iota of anything you saw that exists in today's openSUSE, even historically.

    Hi Tyler,
    A hint for one thing you ran into...
    Nice intro to YaST, but you might find that to really understand more of the power of YaST, open the YaST Software Managr and do a search for "yast2"
    You'll find that there is an abundance of modules available to easily configure many applications that are typically complex and difficult to set up correctly.
    A common example if you want to install and configure Apache webserver.
    First, if your Apache is going to be part of a LAMP stack, instead of installing the Apache, Mariadb and PHP apps individually, you can modify the Software Manager to display "Patterns" and install the LAMP stack in one go.
    After installed, you should see a new "http server" YaST module which can set you up with the basics. If you don't see it, install "yast2-http-server"
    If you have any questions or run into an issue, ask your question either on IRC using the #SUSE freenode channel or in the openSUSE Technical Help Forums.

    • @pavelperina7629
      @pavelperina7629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd like second part as well ... it's always nice to see how difficult is installing and updating 3rd party binary programs. Such as GPU drivers, virtual box kernel modules, vivaldi, spotify, (vs)code, whatsup, skype, teams, ... Fedora seems to be very unfriendly there, installing code on mint seems to be a bit pain in the ass, installing vivaldi with codecs on Manjaro is a joke (arch package with need to recompile chromium which is likely last thing you want to compile), opensuse makes installing vivaldi easy, vbox drivers are included, but I failed with something else (well, broken VTK devel libraries on tumbleweed and something I don't remember)

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pavelperina7629
      1. There are various recommended ways to install GPU drivers ranging from simple (just add the repo and update) to more complex for those who want more control. For any special questions, recommend the openSUSE Technical Help Forums if it's likely someone asked the question before (just search the Forum) ask your question or if you're in a hurry maybe someone on IRC channel #SUSE can help you out.
      2. Unlike other distros, openSUSE pre-compiles Virtualbox for you so it's an easy install without building kernel modules. The modules are maintained and updated whenever you do a system update and install a new kernel. Or, if for some reason you want to install from the Oracle website, you have that option too. Find or ask any questions you have in the openSUSE Technical Help Forums.
      3. Most if not all the apps you ask about are available in openSUSE repositories, even specialty apps. In another comment to this video I mention that there are maybe over a thousand official openSUSE repos you can add if needed.

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2. Mainly SUSE (the paid version) but can be installed in openSUSE has its own version of kubernetes called kubic. There are even special very minimal images of openSUSE built specially to run in kubic.
      3. Unlike almost all other distros, openSUSE supports a multitude of Desktops and they can be installed side by side. If you have the disk space, you can even install apps based on Gtk and Qt on the same system, mix and matching apps from anywhere regardless of the Desktop's native libraries.
      4. BTRFS snapshots are managed by an app called Snapper, all installed automatically and pre-configured to snapshot on every boot, shutdown and package install and removal. Roll backward and forward to whatever you want as many times as you wish. All working out of the box without any User setup.
      5. Starting with openSUSE 15.0, the freeware openSUSE shares the same codebase as the paid SLES, so although normally you wouldn't install apps from one into the other, doing so would almost certainly work.
      The install should display links to documentation, else if you have questions about anything hop on over to the openSUSE Technical Help Forums for guidance and solutions. Or, if you're in a hurry, ask your question on IRC channel #SUSE.

    Hi Tyler,
    A hint for one thing you ran into...
    By default, openSUSE will install the current latest stable KDE/Plasma "everything" but if you want a later version of something or something that might be on the bleeding edge of KDE development, you can install the special KDE repostiories.
    As you noted, in your video you installed openSUSE with only 4 repositories... The OSS repository which replaces and can be removed from your system after installation (disable the DVD repo if you do this), its update repository, the non-OSS repository (contains important non-written by openSUSE) and its updates repository. But, there actually hundreds, maybe over a thousand repositores about every technology you can think of to provide specialized software for your system like special development languages, industrial applications, specific topics... and besides all those, repositores people can create on their own not attached to a specific project.
    Here is the SDB KDE repositories page, SDB articles are community written and maintained, but considered highly authoritative compared to personal Wiki pages
    en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories
    You'll love openSUSE!

    I come from the Unix world back in the early 1980s. SCO Unix, sunos, ultrix, Solaris etc and first used Linux with redhat 2, liked rpm and unix-ness. Moved from there to opensuse for the similarity to RH and loved it. I never understood sudo-ing every root command; just su to do admin stuff and get out. Yast is great. Opensuse just humbly does a great job of Linux while the other distros scramble for limelight. Keep up the great work!

    When I first started using Linux in '05, Mandrake and openSUSE were my favorites. They both had easy installs, great configuration programs, and felt like the closest candidates to helping Linux succeed on the desktop (back when they still came in physical boxes). Nowadays openSUSE still holds that simple yet professional polish but I picture it as being more of an office workstation distro rather than one for a home user. I know that setting up codecs/adding packman is pretty simple, but it seems like openSUSE's marketing isn't as geared toward the casual user, as say, Linux Mint or Zorin--which both focus on out-of-the-box marketing to non-technical users.

    I'm kind of interested in openSUSE because it is supposed to be very stable and have played with it a bit, but I do have a couple of issues. Tumbleweed updates seem to be even bigger than Arch, I kind of hoped Leap updates would be significantly less. I had installed the beta to try but the first beta update was huge so I gave up lol. The issue for me is not so much the number of updates but that the actual update process was so slow. I did search quite a bit to see if I could change to a local Australian mirror for updates to see if this helped, but for the life of me I couldn't find a way to actually do this. If anyone knows of a link to help me change to a local Aussie mirror for installs and updates, I would be really appreciative lol. Just out of interest, Tyler, do you have a need for the Packman repos for SUSE? Might be good to show people the best way to install them... if you need them anyway :) Thanks as always for your work :)

    • @pavelperina7629

      Leap has only security updates and maybe few things such as Firefox and Chromium. Due to crazy tumbleweed updates I deleted Tumbleweed after trying for two weeks in virtual machine and I'm sticking with Manjaro. Not only downloads are faster, but installation process as well and it's way more stable.
      However I'm looking for distro for 2012 notebook connected to internet almost exclusively via mobile phone and so far I somehow prefer OpenSuse to Ubuntu (or Mint), I can't tell exactly why

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When a distro is in pre-release, it has all sorts of tracking code embedded in it to tell Developers what went wrong when problems happen. That's all removed now. Just download a fresh new DVD or NET install, your install should be plenty fast, especially now when the distro fresh and updates are minimal.
      As for repository mirrors, the openSUSE technology "Mirror brain" should automatically select a fast repository close to you although you can override it. As I said, repositories should be fast now, you might have caught the repo server loading up all the new software

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question about Packman, people should know that unlike almost all distros openSUSE has a policy about not distributing proprietary or defective license software and many multimedia apps and codecs aren't 100% free and publicly licensed.
      The following link has best instructions for installing the Packman repo and installing the most common apps and codecs needed for general use

    At home I use Tumblweed, it’s OK.
    I tried to install Leap 15.2 at work, it was a nightmare. I can't find a reliable SIP phone. Zoiper 5 turned out to be the best, but it crushes all the time during the call. Other SIP phones did not allow me to copy the incoming phone number (Linphone, Ekiga). Jami and Blink didn't start at all.
    The overall performance of the system was optimal for my needs, except for SIP. I'm reinstalling Windows now.

    • @tonysu8860

      Almost right.
      Just checked, this part of the installation has changed from before...
      When you choose "Generic Desktop" you indeed get a bare bones X Window system but Openbox and twm aren't installed by default... icewm is the default which although is "only" a wm gives you a layout as close to a full Desktop as possible.
      If you want a wm like twm or OpenBox, you can certainly click on "Software" in the Installation Summary screen, search for your preferred WM and remove (or leave installed) icewm, whatever your preference. I didn't check this time, but when a full DE like MATE or Cinnamon are installed, they'll install their own preferred WM if a WM doesn't already exist, or re-use whatever is already installed.

Another must is to install mscorefonts + Tahoma from Windows installation.
    And young person goes for useless latte-dock every time. Even though displays are growing bigger and bigger horizontally, and it makes much more sense to put taskbar vertically on the right or on the left... :>
