    My mom and I have often told each other, in times of intense uncertainty and stress, "Don't worry, it will all work out, it always does," and it generally does work out. We do this as a way to relinquish anxiety about things we can't control so we can move forward. It helps us have the courage to move on in the face of uncertainty, not manifest vacations in tropical locations.

      I just had this same conversation with my mom this weekend! Sometimes when you’re facing tough shit, you need to say “we’ll get through it” just to hear that hope out loud. But then we buckle down and find ways to make it work, not just high-five and think the problem’s solved.

      Right! It seems like we're jumping to the extreme opposite now and denying the benefits of a positive mindset. Being positive has never once done me wrong. At best, I get what I want; at worse, I'll be in a positive mindset regardless. Being negative, however... Never once served me

      So true!! This happened to me while I was pregnant, all of a sudden in every corner I saw a pregnant woman or a woman with a baby and then I thought "How come everyone is having babies at the same time?" But then I realized that it was just that my mind was focusing more on that because it was something I was experiencing. I've also been told by people who are lonely that they see couples all the time, it's just what your mind selectively searches for.

  • @hannahb2306
    @hannahb2306 ปีที่แล้ว +1706

    It’s so toxic because there’s *nothing* wrong with thinking positive thoughts/doing things that make you feel hopeful, but you can’t get so obsessed with ~manifesting~ that you make yourself feel like it’s your fault when things don’t always fall into place, or that people who have a hard time deserve it.

    • @hannahb2306
      @hannahb2306 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      +AND you can’t be so into manifesting that you do nothing to actually make the good things happen to you. Like, it’s fine to have affirmations about how good things will come, but if you do nothing to make them happen, or if you try and it still doesn’t work out, it can devolve into a really unhealthy obsession.

    • @bluealien-mae
      @bluealien-mae ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Right? there is no way this won't lead to very unhealthy coping mechanisms. even if this does 'work', their mental health is fucked long term.

    • @skypaver989

      For real, I'm all for good vibes and prayers and mantras, but that kind of stuff has to inspire you to actually act as a force for good in your life and in the lives of those around you. Just expecting to be lucky won't actually do anything good.

    • @thebeaside
      @thebeaside ปีที่แล้ว +31

      RIght like I believe in ‘manifestation’ to the degree that I think that the energy and attitude and vibes you bring with you affect the people around you and how they treat you and how you interpret the things that happen. Like when I’m in a good mood, getting caught in the rain is fun instead of annoying. But like it’s not magic and bad stuff can still happen that has nothing to do with you and your vibes. There is no frequency of vibration that will prevent structural oppression or bad people who don’t give a fuck about your wellbeing doing bad things to you. Like have a good attitude and work towards your goals, but don’t think that you’re immune from the bullshit.

    Honestly, there is merit in reframing your experiences into a positive and cultivating gratitude for when small things go your way. I bet if the restaurant those girls went to was closed, they would have found something else to eat and found a reason that “everything works out for me.” Additionally, not worrying about things you CAN’T control can reduce distress.
    Can it be toxic? Absolutely. If you’re so positive that you can’t recognize you’re in a bad situation, that’s dangerous.
    All things in balance ❤

We are blamed for our disabilities because we have a "negative" attitude when in reality we are exhausted and resentful of navigating an ableist and inaccessible world that finds us expendable because of our inability to generate capital at the same level as abled people.

      I have ehlers danlos and I do as much work in the home that I can. My attitude and drive is good but my body is not consistently good enough for consistent work. I look healthy, fit, and slim. I can't manifest my body to keep up with my work ethic. And I still hear comments that I have to "get out there" and "just try a job". I've had a job and college before, trying to meet deadlines, and I have never felt more disabled in my life. I completely overworked my body trying to do what others expected of me.

      I don't think this is necessarily true BUT most common because I often think of people who were just scouted to become a star or met the right person - I think it's important to also not discredit how much luck plays a part in success. It is a necessity and you can create your own luck through hard work but you may still be beaten by someone who was simply lucky. That's life too. Of course after a lucky encounter you have to put in the hard work but not everyone fully does or is talented. I'm rambling but basically YES hard work but ALSO YES good luck. I think a lot of people buying into this lucky girl syndrome do lean too hard towards wanting things to fall into their lap but it stems from deeper issues of feeling like the world is out of their hands and helplessness.

  • @Sara-Loves-Puns
    @Sara-Loves-Puns ปีที่แล้ว +147

    I'm reminded of a lyric from a Starkid musical that's basically a Disney parody. "If you're good and you're attractive, no need to be proactive. Good things will just happen to you."
    It feels like there's also an element of privilege to Lucky Girl Syndrome without having to acknowledge that privilege. That's what feels slimy to me. Maybe everything doesn't work out for other people, not because of their mindset, but because the institutions we live in systemically disadvantage those people.

    I agree with you. Like, I used to be homeless a few years back, and when I was living in the shelter, I met people who had been in that situation for at least a DECADE, if not longer. Most of them desperately wished for life to be better and worked their butts off trying to make it so, but were severely depressed because nothing was working. Because disability, because discrimination, because the system simply failed them. "Manifestation," also known as wishful thinking, can't save you in that situation or create any major changes. Only action will, which means not only working hard, but also working to change this extremely broken/dysfunctionally designed system.

    One thing about these mindsets like lucky girl syndrome and law of attraction that really gets me is: what do they think happens when two people’s desired outcomes are in direct conflict? What if two people who are trying to get the same job or apartment both tell themselves that they’re so lucky and they’ll get what they want? What decides which person’s “luck” is more important? What saddens me is that the Law of Attraction (what the Lucky Girl Syndrome is based on) does work when understood and done properly, but it's been oversimplified and sold as something ridiculous. At its core, it's simply some form of self-hypnosis that shifts your limiting beliefs and reduces your tendency to self-sabotage. Because unconsciously, we only accept opportunities that we feel we're worthy of. That's why you often see people ruining promising relationships because they don't feel they're worthy of being happy. Or they believe that "relationships are hard work'. LOA is also related to concepts like the placebo effect, mirror neurons, etc. I've used it a lot to build my self worth and it's worked great. But obviously, it's only an addition to concrete actions and deep self work.

      Yes
      And it is not the same as saying we won’t move ourselves towards that direction we want to see either. People usually JUMP into that conclusion when you have faith in something/someone will bless you, being you the good things or opportunities you want to see happening to you.
      But it is WAY easier to plan and execute when we are not carrying a mountain of doubt, fear, shame, low self worth and limiting beliefs.
      It’s like they get bother when we take strength and inspiration from a religion or philosophy, to the point of trying to scorn you about it.
      But when you are speaking negative things over your ambitions and dreams, that is too hard, too unlikely, those people don’t put that same energy to motivate us and give as a better perspective.

I have horrible intrusive thoughts and have had to learn how to manage them by letting them pass over me and not ruminating on them like I used to. It's so hard. Stuff like this emphasizes that if anything bad were to happen to me it would be my fault for these negative thoughts and even more my fault if I ruminate on them.

    To be honest with you, I really believe that the mindset can change a lot of things in your life. I used to have social anxiety, and then I met someone who never judged others and he himself was not scared to be judged. And I said to myself, if he can do it, then why can't I? And then my whole self-confidence got a boost, and my anxiety decreased to almost 0. I was much more open with others, starting conversations with people I was not close with, never had awkward moments, and I had a whole new mindset of: I can do this.
    I'm not saying that the lucky girl syndrome is correct, because of course you need to be in control of what is happening to you, but I do believe that a strong and positive mindset can change your life for the better. Mostly because the same things happen to you, but you just view them differently and in a more positive way. And that's what matters

If someone gets laid off, develops a serious illness, or has any other misfortune, is that their fault? Lucky Girl Syndrome is based on the idea that our desires control the universe. I don't hate this trend at its core. I used to study psychology so I have a smudge of knowledge on this topic. This way of thinking could reframe one's experiences and seems to be the antithesis of the "only bad things happen to me"-mindset, which is linked to learned helplessness and depression. As one of the girls mentioned: she used to believe that she wouldn't manage certain tasks (aka "jinx it") and that seemed to impact her motivation poorly. Thinking "hey, I *am* lucky and this *will* work" could help your motivation and reduce stress. The lucky girl syndrome sehr adjacent to positive psychology, which has many wonderful qualities.
    However, just like positive psychology, there can be some downsides. From what I learned at uni, the ideal way of thinking would be positive and believing one is in control - as Hannah says, you can't just sit back and do nothing. People without credentials selling courses/books/etc. on mental health will also always be a big red flag.
    But all in all, believing that good things will happen to you and treating the world and yourself accordingly (aka with kindness and enthusiasm) seems nice and a good break from hustle culture

    It feels like this could be a good thing for mental health if you flipped things around and had the affirmation AFTER the good thing, instead of trying to have it BEFORE. If you're someone who experiences depression or mood issues, then it can be really good to consciously recognise when good things happen to you - to stop and acknowledge them and reflect on them. So if you had a positive affirmation that you say to yourself after you experience good things (even if they are as mundane as the noodle place being open) it can help keep you from obsessing over everything that ever goes wrong in your life. The problem is trying to imply causality and suggesting that saying these magic phrases will MAKE the good stuff happen.

      Anything can become negative if critical thinking is not applied to it. Affirmations are about saying the things you want out loud until they become true, and a lot of hard work goes into both saying those things out loud and working hard to make them happen. Every person who's looked in the mirror and told themselves they're beautiful, for even a week will tell you that these things make a real difference. When I'm down and something good happens, even like finding a good parking spot, I tell myself I'm the luckiest girl in the whole world and it honestly changed how I approach every single aspect of my life. Sometimes I get lucky, but saying these things to myself has taught me to see a lot of things in my life as new opportunities and now I make my own luck. And it's taken a really long while and a lot of hard work to get here. Words just help and they're free!

So whenever I started getting angry or upset about things I start going through a list of things I’m thankful for in my life and why I’m so blessed and lucky.

    There's just a good feeling that comes with positive affirmations. There's no harm in this practice. In fact, if you continue to work and do the hard part, then when the results are evident, you can say good stuff happens. I don't think you replace the work you do with the affirmations, you use them both to remain positive.

    I haven't finished the video yet but I want to put my two cents in anyways. "Everything works out in the end" is my mantra too because, in my life, that's how it goes. That does not mean I don't work for what I have and want; I do and it's hard but worth it. It's more of a reassurance for the difficult times: everything might not be okay right now, but if I keep working and going towards what I want, I'll get there. I'm not lucky but everything works out in the end because I work my ass off for it. Saying it just reminds me of how much things have changed for the better and how much they will in the future.

I search for a new apartment for four hours every day ( i have a full time job and do a PhD on the side), make plenty of phone calls in a language i don't really speak. Every day i am like "okay, today's the day". But no. I get more desperate and stressed every day and everything just seems to get worse (like my aunt and father dying within a month). I struggle with my mental health regularly, so I have adopted the practice of mindfulness and gratitude. It can be very helpful, but Lucky Girl Syndrome sounds like a path to ignoring your feelings, denying reality, and avoiding action. Acceptance of experiences and emotions and taking action is a huge piece that's missing. You need to put effort into what you want.

    This reminds me of when Harry wins the Liquid Luck elixir in Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince! In the movie Harry pretends to pour the liquid luck into Rons drink the morning of a very important Quidditch match, to calm his nerves and make him believe that he is now magically lucky, and will manage anything he puts his mind to. And Ron kills at the match and they win.
    While lucky-girl syndrome may have some percieved effects, i think this is mainly from making them stop second guessing themselves, lowering anxiety and stress and just giving them the confidence that they may have lacked. HOWEVER.. how sad is it to attribute all that to some mysterious magnetizing frequency instead of what it actually is: themselves taking action and utilizing whatever skills and ability they themselves have!
    Ron played that match all by himself, and the resourceful, intelligent women in this video made changes all on their own.
    I find it incredibly disempowering to place the results of hard work, determination and general personal skill onto some fleeting idea of «liquid luck».

    There are a few realities at play that are totally separate from luck but are a real result of mindset and emotions. If someone is more positive and more confident, they do tend to get more opportunities. They may get promoted at work, or get a date, etc because positive and negative emotion affect the way we act and speak. Ultimately, the way we act and speak affects how those around us interact with us. Pure cause and effect, not luck.

    I'm glad to see you do a video on this. As someone recovering from evangelical religious trauma and having adopted some pagan ideals all the way back in 2009. With the surge recently of witchy and pagan stuff I was excited that I might find some more resources and contacts and "my people." So, a couple of years ago I started looking on twitter and ... it was honestly the same type of stuff as I was raised with in my parent's religion. A lot of prosperity gospel and this, say what you want and it will come to you. I haven't finished your video yet, so I don't know if you say this but the worst part for me is:
    IF IT DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU, IT IS YOUR FAULT.
    This is the same thing the church taught me with praying. I was taught to ask god "in Jesus's name" and you'll get it. But if you don't it is because either A) god decided you weren't ready or worthy, or B) the devil is stopping you and it is because either you let him in by doing something wrong, or it is what you need to do in life and you need to work harder and ask harder to get it. Either way it all comes down to, if you get what you want it is because you are good enough in god's eyes. That is the same thing here. If you didn't get it, you didn't affirm right and you have some sort of negativity that is blocking you from it. It is all rooted in the same ideals, especially putting it onto girls and women, that if you have any negativity in your life be it emotional or otherwise, you will not get what you want.
    This is a long comment, sorry to anyone who reads it.

    Mindset does work - in that it helps to do the things that cause change. If ones inner monologue is "It doesn't matter what I do, nothing works out", you don't bother looking for that new job, new apartment or put the effort into tik tok. Telling yourself that you will succeed (essentially what this is) puts someone in the mindset that they are willing to try.
    So no, it isn't as simple as "you will magically get what you want if you have lucky girl syndrome" but it can change your mindset so you attempt the things you want and one is certianly more likely too get what they want if they try.
    This is fairly well known. Sure, they're explaining it very badly and in a way I would say is not helpful (especially the first 2 girls) but ignoring the place of mindset in success is foolish.
    Manifesting is dumb but mindset has a huge place in many peoples success.

But for me, it was more of a starting point to act on the things I should be doing to get what I want.

    To be honest, this is exactly how I feel when I hear people thanking god for the good things that happen in life. Maybe it could be, but there is no objective proof, and the more likely reason is because of people’s hard work or focus on the things they want in life. Lucky girl syndrome doesn’t account for the bad things that happen, and similarly, believers usually don’t hold god accountable for the bad things that happen either. Maybe a controversial view, but they kinda feel the same to me in that respect.

    Improving your mental health steadily (with a variety of methods so that if a method fails you, then you can adjust) is healthier imo. The woo woo bits about magnetism and “energy” can be dismissed as nonsense, but the fact that changing your mindset has social effect, including ones that benefit you and clear the path towards what you want to accomplish….that is observably true….and not because of woo woo stuff, but because we are social creatures and the people we interact with respond to the social signals we send out. If those signals are “I’m a sad disaster just waiting to fail again” people tend to not pull you into their fold, if you signals are “I’m s cheerful optimist looking for my next opportunity” people tend to gravitate towards you and want to help you succeed. I have mixed feelings about this. One thing I've noticed with this trend is that it seems to feature almost exclusively white, conventionally attractive, (presumably) financially privileged women. Like, the fact that things work out for you isn't because you're lucky, it's because you have the privilege of a strong support network and financial stability without needing to worry about working too hard to achieve what you desire. However, I do think the underlying message has some validity. Sometimes it's good to relinquish control and trust that things will work out the way you hope. Often anxiety and worry does not serve us, and I don't think that message is toxic. I don't find that message toxic at all.
