Hello, I saw your video a while ago, after seeïng ziljen videos about plate warping and solutions. Jennifer McGuire is BRILLIANT, so I did what she did, taped the plates together, but AT ONCE one of my plate broke in 100 pieces (so to speak), I'm probably the only one that can't use the brilliant Jennifer McGuire method :-( and don't even understand why not :-( . Tried warming them with water and tryied and I turned all the plates around and 4 ways each plate (that was the best way I found), UNTIL I TRIED YOUR WAY !!!! OMG so simple and logical, but after 1 week, my plates are still almost flat !!! YOU ARE SO BRILLIANT !!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH !!!!!!

Wish I would’ve seen this about a week ago! I just ruined a brand new set of acrylic plates by rotating them over and over (like other videos suggested). First time I’ve ever used my big shot and I was surprised at how quickly the acrylic plates became warped and unusable! My thinlet dies won’t work because my plates are so warped, only a small section of the dies will cut. I gave up and went back to my Cricut. Glad I saw this. Going to buy new plates and try it using your tips. Thank you 😊
I just happen to have new plates in my stash...will definitely give this a try.....just wish there was a bigger magnetic platform for my. Bigger cutting plates....going to share with my friends too....thank you

Hi! After trying with hot water, oven with aluminum foil wrapping, I am glad I saw your video. I have been following your advice for almost 6 months and it works just fine. I am in love again with my magnetic platform using the same cutting plate. Thank you so much!

If you have a different platform from what I am using, the tip doesn't apply. Sorry, took a much needed TH-cam break, and trying to go through all the comments.
OMG! YES! I literally started a new set of plates 2 days ago. 2 DAYS ago and they are warped beyond reason. I've got them under boiling water and bricks right now to straighten them, and just ordered 2 new pairs. So, I will be doing this from now on, thank you for a fabulous tip!
Love the new tip of investing in a set off new cutting plates and then after each use testing for any "GIVE", then flipping over to make your next cuts. Goood advice.

I know this vid is old but I saw Jennifer Mcguire's hubby tell how to fix most old warped plates. You take a large pot and fill it with hot water and bring it to a boil. Also take a med size pot and fill and bring it to a boil. Place 1 of your plates with warp hump on top so it is a mound. With it in a sink, pour med. size pot of boiling water over plate and place the full pot of boiling hot water on my top of plate and let it set for 20 min or longer. Check plate to see if it is flattened. If still warped, repeat process. If plate is to warped, it might not flatten it out enough to reuse but worth the try. Also, use a scrub brush on it to remove all old paper stuck in all those grooves.

This is a great tip and I am so ready to try it. I struggle withj my magnetic plate because of warped plates. I have "cooked" t them in the oven to straighten them out but they always seem a little bowed. thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for this tip. I have the big shot plus but I invested in the smaller big shot cutting plates for most of my dies and folders as they're cheaper to replace.

Great Tip Meg! Greatest tip I have heard for saving our cutting plates. Some people think you should cut with your dies facing up, whichI don't agree with to save your cutting plates. Thank your friend and thank you for passing this along to us. This tip should be put into every set of cutting plates Stampin Up sells. Thanks again Meg!

I bought an unbranded die cutting machine. The cutting mat is like hard rubber, more flexible and heavier than acrylic/glass plastic. It doesn't warp and it doesn't dull the dies.

thanks for the tip. I've been labeling my plates "A" side and "B" side. I still have a "do not cut plate". I start out with the both on the "A" or "B" sides up, then after cutting, I flip both over to the opposite side. This seems to have helped with them not warping.

I was given a big shot recently. I went to get plate on sale at HL and the had the purple plates. I got one purple so I always remember that it’s my do-not-cut-plate.
Sizzix themselves give good advice too: 1. use the whole surface, i.e. move your pieces each time you use the machine; 2. use both sides of your plates; 3. if it starts to bend, cut into the curve. I store my plates on the Big Shot so I don't loose them and never had a problem. Had my BS for at least 5 years now and no warping. No cracked yet either. Nicole, Canada

Thank you sooo much for sharing this information. I recently broke my Big Shot Switch machine when a plate edge popped up and broke the inside of the machine. It was warped some, but I never expected it could break the machine. So I am back to my old Big Shot Plus machine. I am following your advice and really appreciating my magnetic plate with new flat plates. Every time I test my plates I think of you going swoosh swoosh sounds while flipping the plates. It amused me and I smile when I think of it. Yes, I am easily amused.
No, I did not get the extended warranty. But I have decided I like my old Big Shot Plus better. I can feel when I start cranking if it needs adjusted. Plus, I can crank faster than the electronic machines. I do have arthritis in my hands, but for now I can still crank it myself. Who knows, maybe by that time they will come up with something new.
Thanks for this awesome tip. I came across a tip (I don’t remember from who) but it works great when your waiting for your new plates. Run a steel rule die several times with the blades facing the concave side. It will take several times if the plate is pretty bad.

This is a great easy tip! I will do this when I get my new flat cutting pads. So, always use the same pad as the bottom plate and if there is give rotate it?

My problem is with the top plate warping, how does this work for that please. It looks as though you are flipping so that the bowed side goes down which is opposite to what one would expect. Is that correct?
Lorna Payne The tip was to check your plate for “give” if there’s give flip if no give don’t flip and only use one plate for cutting and one for the top.
@@sammidan I understood "give" to mean that it isn't sitting flat, which means there's a gap and when you push on it there's a sort of spring to it, or "bounce" as you have mentioned.
She's cutting with the die facing down, not up - maybe that's why the top plate isn't warping? I don't know whether her method would work if you prefer to cut with the die facing up. (I cut face up with detailed dies so that I can see whether they've cut all the way through, but I cut down with simple dies. Also, she didn't say if her approach works if you use the regular platform some/most of the time, or just if you always use the magnetic platform.
Hi Meg, thank you for this i am very good on my mats but the problem i have is because i use them so much they start getting scratches on them that in turn transfer onto my card then it looks like fiber glass patterns all over. Its great for leaves and other things you want veining on but not great for others. Any help please. Thanks Hugs and Luvs xxx Wendy
Meg, I am confused. How does your top plate being fresh eliminate patterns from the bottom plate transferring to your cardstock? The bottom plate is what touches the cardstock. Please explain.
Wendy, have you tried using seal sealing cutting mats in place of your plates? I have heard of many people trying this new tip and I just bought a mat to cut to size of the plates! Look for TH-cams on it!
Hi Melissa. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have tried that but haven't got the sandwich quite right yet. I use half of a magnetic sheet also to avoid for the time being instead of buying a magnetic plate. Now I need to find the other piece of self healing mat to try using 2 at a time. I bought some new plates yesterday so its like starting afresh. I am also going to raid my husband tool cupboard for some sandpaper to see if that takes away the roughness on my old plate and then I can try it. Thank you once again Hugs and Luvs xxx Wendy
So you always have the same plate on the bottom? I have been going through plates lately and it is making me nuts. Thank you for the tip. And please let me know if I alway use the same plate on the bottom.?
Thanks so much! I've only had My New Bigshot for a few months and My plates are warped! I've never been able to use My magnetic platform yet and of course when I wanted to I couldn't because My plates are warped. I did by an extra set when I bought it, but what a disappointment to have the plates warp so quickly. I watched in detail Stacey from Scrapbooking Made Simple show how to use it and still got warped plates. I am having trouble with the 3D Embossing Folder going through the machine. I don't force it and have tried using a heavy card stock as a shim but I'm still confused on what I should do. Any advice from Anyone who may see My comment, please help!! I don't want to continue to buy new plates every few months! I've got the precision base plate for intricate dies and just ordered a gush pad and a knock knock plate (Names that Stacey calls them. SMS #319 or 320)

I am still trying to get back to all the comments on this video after a much needed break. Fun fact, I am still using the same plates I used when I made this video :)
What do you mean "if it gives, ...?". So there is a wrong side and a right (or correct) side? You mean if it goes down in the middle? I have two scratched plates. And I bought new ones and those have boyh scratched. They are quite expensive now, unless you only get a single plate. I've seen the double packs for $15 and the single plate for $8 or $9. I would appreciate the help.
June M - Your cutting plate will get scratched regardless, but the tip she shared (to avoid excessive warping) is to always use the same (scratched) plate as your bottom cutting plate and flip it if it warps a little to warp or flatten it back the other direction. Your other plate (the top one) will stay relatively scratch free if you never use it on bottom of the sandwich. Scratches don't interfere with most die cutting but a warped cutting plates make it more of a challenge.
I was always flipping and turning and was grand for years but now I have a little dome on the one I cut into so got new plates and I hate them. My dies aren't cutting through, I'm having to run some dies 2-3 times and others I have to use a shim, so disappointed with the new plates. I switched back to the old plates thinking maybe it was the machine and they cut first time so there's obviously a slight difference in thickness 😢

Just got my Big Shot foldaway. Is it normal for a Thin die (framelits) to cut into the cutting pads? Only after one pass and I now have hearts embedded into the plastic pads. Seems like this will happen everytime?
I have a question regarding the top pressure plate. The impression on this plate from the back side of the cutting dies leaves the impressions on my card stock . What am I doing wrong? Do I need a shim between the die and the top plate?
You might be able to solve that by putting an extra piece of smooth card stock over the piece you're cutting (or under it, if your die is facing down). I've heard that you don't even need card stock - any piece of paper will do, even junk mail, as long as it's smooth. It's worth a try.

Will, it's not my bottom late that warps, it's the top plate that warps, any suggestions?
If you have a different platform from what I am using, the tip doesn't apply. Sorry, took a much needed TH-cam break, and trying to go through all the comments.
I have been doing this for many years, since I got my used red and white Big Shot on ebay.
It does work great!
Thank you for sharing.
OMG! YES! I literally started a new set of plates 2 days ago. 2 DAYS ago and they are warped beyond reason. I've got them under boiling water and bricks right now to straighten them, and just ordered 2 new pairs. So, I will be doing this from now on, thank you for a fabulous tip!
Hope it works great for you! I am STILL using the same plates from that video. And I use that machine 10-15 times a day, 5 days a week.
@@ITeachStamping I'll be honest, I moved on to the Anna Griffin Empress machine. Iget no warping with her plates!
Love the new tip of investing in a set off new cutting plates and then after each use testing for any "GIVE", then flipping over to make your next cuts. Goood advice.
I'm from Italy, can I kindly ask what does give mean in this case? I really don't understand... thank you

Use a self healing mat works the same and £3

Great Tip Meg! Greatest tip I have heard for saving our cutting plates. Some people think you should cut with your dies facing up, whichI don't agree with to save your cutting plates.

Bought new ones & use this method now, it absolutely works.
I was given a big shot recently. I went to get plate on sale at HL and the had the purple plates. I got one purple so I always remember that it’s my do-not-cut-plate.
Perfect!

😍🥰💕
Did you get the extended warranty? My big shot switch broke more than a year after I bought it but I had the extended warranty and they replaced it.
Which side is the concave side?.. The bowed side?
Yes. The side that is curved in like a bowl. Hope that makes sense.

My problem is with the top plate warping, how does this work for that please. It looks as though you are flipping so that the bowed side goes down which is opposite to what one would expect. Is that correct?
Hi Angela, I hear that a lot from people using the older platform with the tabs. Is that what you are using? And yes, it does seem opposite :)
To flatten your top plate, place it on top of the sandwich with the hump facing upward.
Thank you for sharing your videos
Glad you like them!
Not sure what the tip is!
Lorna Payne The tip was to check your plate for “give” if there’s give flip if no give don’t flip and only use one plate for cutting and one for the top.
@@cassandras1688 what do you mean with "give"? Bounce maybe? Your not getting anything by pushing the plate is it? 🤣 Is it some kind of an expression?
@@sammidan I understood "give" to mean that it isn't sitting flat, which means there's a gap and when you push on it there's a sort of spring to it, or "bounce" as you have mentioned.
@@leandavm8626 thank you. I understand it now.
'give' means when you press it down, there is, as you mention, bounce.

No I don't. Hope it helps!
What do I do to prevent the top plate from curving? I’m not sure what you do with the top plate.

Hi Wendy! By keeping your top plate as a top plate, you will eliminate that problem :)
Meg, I am confused. How does your top plate being fresh eliminate patterns from the bottom plate transferring to your cardstock? The bottom plate is what touches the cardstock. Please explain.
Hi Melissa me too. I had to buy another set yesterday. xxx

Hi June, yes, if it presses down when you push on it, flip your bottom plate :)
Good tip!
Thank you so much for sharing!!!

Yes. Only cut into the bottom plate though.
Just got my Big Shot foldaway. Is it normal for a Thin die (framelits) to cut into the cutting pads? Only after one pass and I now have hearts embedded into the plastic pads. Seems like this will happen everytime?
Yes! You will have cut marks on your clear plates. Your dies will cut through your card stock into your plates to ensure a clean cut.
It's worth a try.
do you use 1 or 2 new plates and does the new one goes on top or under, cant find out in the movie, sorry
For the best results, I recommend starting with two new plates.
Thank you!!
thanks Meg! i will give this a try!

Thanks, it doesn't seem like it should be so confusing to work with these 😳 thanks for the tip. I'm totally addicted to die cutting.

Thanks for letting us know!
My bottom plate always has stayed flat, but the top plate always warps something shocking. Any suggestions.
