  • Something fun to make... these little fairy houses are actually jars in which you can store tiny treasures. Bring out the air drying clay, and the acrylic paints, and let's begin. This is a long craft activity and will take a few hours. You can use store-bought clay or home-made one. Here is our tried and tested recipe for air drying clay:
    1 cup corn flour
    1/2 cup fevicol / white craft glue
    2-3 spoons white vinegar
    2-3 spoons of Vaseline or oil
    Mix the corn flour, fevicol and vinegar. If too sticky, put loads of oil or Vaseline on your hands while kneading. Once the consistency is like clay, keep it in an airtight container and use it fast! Takes about a day to become fully dry. Then paint with acrylic colours.
    Hope you guys have fun making these. If you do, do share and tag us on instagram as @skygoodiesco. We can't wait to see what you make!

    Detailed step-by-step instructions below:
    This tutorial uses materials that you can find at home or can get easily.
    You will need:
    Air drying clay, home-made or from a store
    Small glass jars with screw top lids
    Aluminium foil
    Toothpicks
    Acrylic paints
    Paint brushes
    Start by thinking of the kind of fairy jar you want to make.
    For example, the top could be flowers or leaves, or mushroom heads.
    For the fairy house with a flower-shaped top, crumple and mould some aluminium foil to the top of the lid.
    Cover it with air drying clay.
    Mould the clay with your hands to make petals for the lid.
    Mould and attach sepals and a base stem.
    On the bottom half of the jar, add details of doors, windows, plants and grass with air drying clay.
    Use toothpicks to make grooves and shape the clay.
    Set the jar aside to dry for 3-5 hours.
    For the mushroom-shaped fairy house, you will need more clay on the lid.
    Make a large mushroom shape and let it dry for half an hour.
    Then add some details, like a chimney and a window.
    On the bottom half of the jar, add details of doors, windows and grass with the clay.
    Add a mushroom or two if you like. Set the jar aside to dry for 3-5 hours.
    With acrylic paints, add colour to your house, starting with a base coat.
    You may need to put 2-3 coats of paint on the glass part of the jar.
    Use your imagination to add colour to your little fairy houses, painting in the details with a fine brush.
    Let the paint dry for 3-5 hours.
    Voila! Your fairy house jars are ready to be filled with small treasures.

    So cute! These would be really fun with a little battery operated tea light inside to make it look like light coming out of the windows.

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      We use a bit of Vaseline if needed to smooth out the cracks that appear while making. And even if a few cracks come up we fill them in while painting. It gives a nice hand made look. For it to be totally crack free, we would recommend polymer clay. Thanks

    How do you get the roof to stay on the lid? Do you superglue it first or something?

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this case, the lid has a rough texture, so I did not face any issue with the clay sticking to the lid. In case the clay does fall off after it has dried, you can use superglue or a strong silicon glue to stick it back on. It works with glass as well, in case some pieces come off. Mostly we try to keep the clay going all around the jar so it kind of locks the jar into place. Hope this helps :)

  • @Creativeme757

    Old I was going about this the wrong way! I was trying to roll clay around the jar than cut out shapes for windows. Have to try this method

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found the video useful! Just one small suggestion- we try to keep the windows and grass and door connected to each other with grass / leaves so they don't fall off the jar as separate elements. (somethings some parts could fall off, and we can super-glue it back). :)

    I tried making this fairy house with air dry clay...... first time I ever used clay.... it came out beautiful, except the next day the door and some of the roof had fallen off...... any suggestion? used ready made store clay

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh so nice that you tried! This happened with me once because the jar was very smooth- the clay top came off. Don’t worry, just use some superglue like fevikwik gel or araldite to stick the parts to the jar. 😊

    Air dry clay will not stick to glass in any permanent way, how did you do it?

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a good question! We make sure the glass is very clean and not oily. Then we make sure the grass fringe and door form a ring around the glass jar. There are vines connecting the windows and grass too. That way the clap parts hold together and don’t fall off. None of the fairy jars we made had any parts falling off. Hope this helped

    I don't have aluminium foil. What can I use instead of that?

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use clay without the foil. The foil saves some clay and also gives structure to the roof.
      Alternatively you can cut pieces of corrugated paper / cardboard and stick them in layers to make a skeleton.

    • @SkyGoodiesCo
      @SkyGoodiesCo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      We used Fevicryl Mouldit clay, and it doesn't fall off glass, as it is very sticky. The jar should be super clean and not oily to start with. One way to ensure the clay doesn't fall off is to make a part of the clay go all the way around the jar, so it is all connected. And if any part falls off you can stick it to the jar with super glue or Araldite glue. Hope this helps!

      We love making different things. We like to have fun making things… the whole point of all these videos is to have fun. We don’t focus that much on whether the houses look neat or not, as long as they make us happy. They look handmade, and we like the wonky handmade look. Since they are fairy houses and presumably made by fairies with natural organic material like flowers, they cannot be straight and neat… that would look odd. Hope this helps 😊

      It would depend on the clay you are using. The one we used- fevicryl mouldit- is very sticky and doesn’t need any extra glue.
