Cool video. I found this video because I was looking for some information on how/if a tree’s shape can change. I have a white oak tree that is about 25 feet tall but it barely has any leaves on the top. It’s been competing for light from some taller trees so I’m guessing that’s why it’s to tall without much or a crown. Do you know if the crown will fill in if light becomes more available? I’m planning to take out some trees which could give it more room and I’ll leave it to grow if it can fill out. If not, I’ll probably take it out and plant a new tree.
Sorry for the delay. I just came across your inquiry. Dead tips on tree crowns is never a good sign. When trees are under stress, they "pull" their resources inward and downward to "stay alive." Hence the dead tips that you are observing. Often times, when conditions improve, they will then sprout new leaves on branch tips. The lack of sunlight due to adjacent competition can surely cause tree stress, particularly on trees that are not shade tolerant. White oak is classed as intermediate in shade tolerance. From what you described, it seems that eliminating competition for sunlight would help this white oak. You should contact a local arborist, forester, or county agent for a site visit.
Great Session! Refreshed my forestry knowledge, well presented. Has added to my UTK Non-Credit landscape pruning 😊class.
Glad that you found this useful. Press on and make a difference!
