It takes two to tango, both parts are to be praised for the game, regardless of outcome. That is not to say the winner shouldn't be called the winner, but over-all, both people will be remembered for this game.
Depends on how you want to define “game of the year”. From a skill standpoint, the game is pretty bad. From an entertainment standpoint, it’s amazing. I’ll say that I PERSONALLY value high skill level games more when defining GOTY candidates, but to each their own ofc. Again, I’ll admit, the game is super entertaining.
This is absolutely filled with blunder after blunder, this gets as much consideration for game of the year as little Timmy and little johns 1900 vs 1900 game on lichess
Yes this was definitely one of the more exciting games I thought Magnus was going to lose and he made the exact same move I would’ve thought of with his second Queen
Absolutely stunning game. Each player, almost turn by turn, landing seemingly knock-out punches, but neither would stay down. Amazing play by both players !! (Again Time was the absolute arbiter pushing both players into making lightning moves !)
Rapport is one of my favourite player. He is so attacking type of player that I feel like it would be great if Rapport lived in the pre engine era. Not only blitz or rapid, Rapport always attacks in Classical format too. Amazing player ❤️
He's too attacking, it makes the possibility of blundering higher... It's fun though, but it's very tense! I often play attacking (knowing that I still have the danger of getting backranked, because I want to win the tempo for to go for the offense) but I just go for it, and keep checking opponent's king 🤣🙈 my heart's always racing when I'm playing like that lmao but I've never got backranked lol
Agad's analysis nailed it. For it was Magnus who took the risks to gain some sort of initiative. Also, his queen's rook did nothing except to become a sacrificial lamb, which lead directly to the two passed pawns and the undoing of Richard's position. Awesome entertainment.
@@niranjanrajesh1058 You are either a newbie at chess or you just don't get my point. So what? Magnus should have amazed me? Richard's games are usually exciting. If you watched candidates tournament or any tournament he took part in, you wouldn't come here as an lņdi@n Rajesh trying to debunk me
Rapport made that beauty happen on the board but Magnus is master of completion!! Credit to both of them not just for this masterpiece but for making the engine looks like a roller coaster!!
I wish we could block PPL like in facebook to avoid such incidents !! My pleasure has been ruined !! I don't even go to comment before watching a video !!
I don’t watch chess much but I understand that Magnus is a MASTERMIND. This was the time for defeat, he was at the brink of loss so many times and in the worst of times he somehow managed to find a solution. That is intense… genius.

I mean, this channel, is my now, longest running, for a reason... Every time there's drama... And those type of games, which makes us, the audience, to love the game. Its like that Najmadinovv coverage you did. Different style and remembered by best of the best. (what was that quote about najmadinov? from all the games i lost I remember against him the most or something?). Love this content. Happy New Year...
Crazy game! The bar was going crazy and even the engine was like "what the f**k are guys doing" lol. And no way Magnus should've won this and his reaction after the game said it all. But he tricked Rapport from an almost certain winning position into losing the game. A wild game indeed.
goes to show that with only a few seconds on the clock even the best players can win or lose it all. Rapport would have won this with any other time control 100/100.
More like rapport turned his brain off, Magnus himself said in the interview after he won the blitz championship that he did not prepare a 2nd queen promotion because he didn't expect Rapport to give him the opportunity to promote a 2nd queen
On these very short games I would, in certain positions, love to know what the computer thinks given very little time to see how accurate the players are.
It might just be my style of play and lack of familiarity with modern chess, on the highest level, but watching the game, Magnus's moves seemed a lot easier to find. So many of the missed wins for Rapport were just ridiculously unnatural looking to me. Even though there were plenty of missed wins, the quality of the endgame play, when the smoke cleared and Magnus had 3 dangerous pawns for a rook, with best move after best move and no time left on the clock, was really impressive. Finally, he takes the rook, which, in a blitz game, is really the only move. The win the computer finds is almost impossible to find in a blitz game if you are human and before computers. I think a group of GMs analyzing an adjourned position would have trouble finding but maybe I am just dim. Really enjoyable game. I love your videos. Your choice of lines that you show and your explanation of the key positional ideas, rather than just drilling through some of the engine's crazy best moves. Reminds me of how chess was back in the day when I played seriously when I could beat all the computers most of the time. At least at my (1600ish rapid) level, the play doesn't seem that different from what it was, and thinking like a human beats humans, so we come up with a plan and execute the plan rather than coming up with a new plan each move, like computers.
Everyone needs to see the video of Magnus the second after he had won. His expression and body language are priceless and telling of how relieved he was (and surprised) to win.
Hats off to rapport for attacking aggressively and making so many winning opportunities, but Carlsen showed his class and experience in time-pressure play
At 2:00 what is the meaning of Rapport Na6? Twould seem Nc6 would make much more impact since the Na6 completely corners that knight (unless planning to push b pawn?) Also several moves later the other knight went exactly to c6 so he could have saved a move doing it the first time?!?
Wow. It's amazing to see again just how good Rapport is, pushing Magnus to the absolute limit with multiple chances to win, and even more so to see again just how GOAT Magnus is as he somehow almost always wins these types of games against the best players. It ain't luck.
Standard Magnus. Yesterday he won with only 30 seconds on the clock plus 1 sec increment. Today he makes a sacrifice like Tal and survives this rollercoaster ride. Unfazed GOAT
This game is one of the greatest examples of why we LOVE chess. Best chess players in the world make moves such that the opponent has a new opportunity each time but it's VERY far from an easy one to find. Wild game. Loving it.
I think even when he resigned he still had counterplay, simply block check with the queen instead of capturing, that would've complicated things and give him a chance
If my heart could beat so fast in this recap of the game, then these players hearts must have been racing with the speed of light in the real game. Boy, this was awesome!
Magnus has a very stable heart rate in these tournaments, close to 70.. chess players' heartbeat was shown many times before in tournaments. hikaru's heartbeat gets at 150 or something in one such tourney.
Couldn’t believe my eyes when I was this live! Lost/winning/lost/winning… eval going crazy. 5 queens. Also it was obviously hard to regain focus after this thriller. Adrenaline rollercoaster. Magnus lost on time the next game and was clearly not back in balance.
This analysis video was almost as intense as the actual game
No way! I had my heart in my mouth while watching live, it's so much more intense you can feel the tension.

The winner is the one who does the second last blunder. So true.
Infact, the exception (who is Morphy) proves the rule.

Of all the powerful queens and sacrificed pieces and rooks, the strongest piece in this game was the a6 pawn.
it was a "nasty" pawn

at 9:35, how did the white pawn on the right get the black pawn directly beside it in g5?
The black pawn came directly to g5 from g7, so white can take it from h5 using en passant.
