Thanks a lot for your time and effort showing us how it's done. Only thing I am trying to change is I want the controls to be left stick to left motor and right stick to right motor like a zero turn.
That’s awesome! And you can totally do that! You need to purchase a “centering spring” for the left stick of the remote if you’re using the same flysky model we are using. You would use channel 2 and channel 4 of the remote receiver instead of 1 and 2. Then you need to make sure you’re using the correct settings in the setup of the DIP switches on the motor driver. Now I have a look and by no means was this my idea at all... BUT Im planning to take things a step beyond and include FPV (first person view) from my quadcopter extras and use my FPV goggles as well. I built an RC mower that was twin blade and used parts from an old wheel chair I got for free from a mobility shop. latter I found out on of the people that worked there was in a wheelchair himself and at the time I didn't thing of the fact that simple chores we take and hate for granted are all most impossible for someone bound to a wheelchair. so when I finished the project I returned to the place they gave me the free parts and gave the controller to said fellow and a tear fell down my cheek as I seen him light up with joy that he could do such a simple chore with ease. it it awesome to see people doing these things and sharing it with others.
Nice work on the RC conversion brother! On a different note, my Uncle broke his neck about 8 years ago. Drs said he would never walk. He is able to drive a car and stand on his own two feet now! Im glad he didnt give up after his injury.
Hello, I am from Germany and found your video. I also have health problems (COPD) and was looking for solutions to mow my lawn. (Approx. 500 sqm). Your video gave me hope that I would soon be able to mow the lawn without difficulty. Thanks for your inspiration. Greetings Tom
Nice build it gave me a few new ideas. The big spring you removed is used on a flywheel brake to stop the blade faster. Another thing you may want to add is a kill switch attached to a bar across the front so if it hits something like a curious kid it will completely shut down before it runs over a foot, cat, a small dog or anything else. Great video have a great one.
Maybe a " bumper mechanism" off like a robo vac or something heavier I think a regular kill switch would get crushed when it hit something harder and disable the whole unit. Yes i know the value of life VS a switch argument But why work harder and more $ when you can work smarter ? .
Wow man! This is absolutely sweet. Its elegant and seems reliable and easy to service. A lot of people build really complex systems that are over my head as a beginner but this is really cool and not over though. Really neat, thanks for making the video explaining everything
lol when I heard "and the bolts work just like you expect bolts to work" I can picture someone actually stopping the video to google it pfft i cracked up
Thank you sir and ma'am, I am about to commence a build of my own and your explanation and instruction has helped me greatly with my preparation. Thank you for your contribution, all parts were purchased through the links provided.
You see, it's a dream of mine to sit on my back porch and watch the lawn mow it's self and watch the wife empty the bag, this is a really good start! Next i need something to take the trash out automatically when it detects nagging.
If you want to get away from the gasoline and carb maintenance. Run it off propane! I just converted one over using 1lb propane bottle, a regulator off a table top grill , a section og hose and a couple brass fittings. Starts faster, runs better and cleaner and no gummed up carb. Love your videos i rewatch them often.
@@MeantToBeLindseyB try and find a regulator off one of those small grills that has the adjustable knob to regulate the flame that way you wont need a inline valve, Also get a brass 90 elbow and drill a hole the size of the end if brass in air filter cover directly over carb leave filter in , Now attach brass to cover ( How i did mine is i drilled a hole big enough in end of brass for a quick pin or cotter pin i put the brass thru , then a large flat washer and the cotter pin ) Attach your hose from that to the regulator, empty gas from mower, To start turn on gas at regulator untill you can just about hear it. Should start on first or second pull. Your RPM is now regulated buy your propane regulator. Just find the mowers sweet spot. Good luck
Hey. I’m christys brother. She lived down where y’all are but now she’s back in ky. I was the one in a car wreck and now I’m a wheelchair also. I’m building one of these but kind bigger. This is really helping me. Thank you for the vid
As a wheelchair user trying to figure the grass cutting thing out. You Sir. have helped in that area. I happen to have an extra electric wheelchair not using with 2 good motors and batteries. Have the mower! So now to order the rest and by this weekend I will be sitting on the porch cutting grass! Wo0t.
I did this out of bordem and laziness. Scared the shit out of my neighbor when i taped a dummy to the handle and mowed his yard three houses down and across the street dragging the dummy me several times back and forth across the yard before mr noey got outside to save me. It was funny as hell at the time. Sorry Ben. Rip. You were a good man. No i didnt kill him. He passed away years after my mowing job.
as of May 2020 I just finished the build on my remote control lawn mower .and I'm extremely happy with it .I too am disabled and it is very exciting to mow the lawn without worry .well not too much worry. thanks to you and others on TH-cam for the idea.❤🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Or how about a grass catcher so you don't have to rake the yard being in a wheelchair that would help a lot leaving your grass clippings on The Lawns can cause it to create moss and choke out your grass
Bro your a genius! It amazes me how the handicapped have this stigma of helplessness when in actuality they can do everything other people can do and often better! Keep up the good work and maybe consider marketing your creation;. It seem to me this could help a lot of people with limited mobility!
Honestly, this video is kick ass finally something that a disabled individual can benefit from using. Do you sell this yourself? If not, you should. Thank you for sharing this. I am definitely going to build something like this. It is very difficult walking around my yard trying to mow the lawn with a walker or a crutch.
We do not sell them. But we wanted to share the idea and inspiration with the world for people like you! Let us know how your build goes and if you have any questions that we can help you with.
@@MeantToBeLindseyB I definitely will. I did find another video that shows a gentleman that did something similar but they used the electric mower and I know on the other video your husband talks about wanting to do it with the electric mower so I think I might go that route using your idea maybe combining the two and see what I can come up with
4:46 at this portion of the video I was just wondering if he added the threaded rod to connect the two gears in the back? Did the gears already have a hole in them or did he have to add that? The gears I have and the ones I’ve seen do not have a hole like that to add the threaded rod so I was just curious thank you.

I'm an automation engineer, I travel the world automating factories with my ingenuity. I say "ingenuity" instead of intelligence, it takes both, but I work with some of the most talented engineers around. BUT they are not the vision, many times I have to rely on them for the calcs and things where I fall short. Let me say to you: CONGRATULATIONS on an AMAZING well thought out, executed machine. I logged in, because I wanted to learn from your automation. It's not about learning from only "the smartest people" learning, is about learning from EVERYBODY. This is NOT directed at you, but I have always said, "i can learn something (maybe / probably) (at least I try) even with the most inexperienced people who I am there to train. My goal is to learn something, from, EVERYBODY, no matter how simple. It just keeps making me smarter, and TH-cam, other than the asshole trolls on here, is a great place to start. You can make a LOT of money doing this kind of work Lindsey. Start advertising some of your "inventions" don't worry about "patents" most not worth the powdered to blow them up. All someone has to do is change the slightest thing and you are screwed, it's a hole you don't want to go down. Start selling your items, keep polishing them up as you go. I have many invnetions that I've sold for almost as much as I do now, and they are VERY ROUGH, but they work, JUST FINE. Those same ones today are very polished and make me look good. but those early customers didn't care, they just wanted me to save them labor. Your audience "might be" the incapacitated, HOWEVER, there are plenty of people like myself who might have fun purchasing such items as well, or even older people. So its hard for me to say. but ltitle by little, start adding items. All of my items came, when people requested I custom build something for them. 50% UP FRONT I give them a GUARANTEE it will perform as outlined in the agreement. They get a VIDEO and high rez photos, and any other documentation to satisfy themselves when I am done. 50% BEFORE it ships. I'm always paid UP FRONT before it is released. Even when it is $1 million usd, I'm not the bank. When they say, "we'll find someone else if you won't" I tell them, "Please do." (THAT almost never happens, when it does they always come back.)
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to leave such an encouraging message. My husband (Wes) wanted to create this, so I wanted to give him the space to share it. With he and I both being wheelchair users, we immediately thought that if he could create something like this then it would be such a quality of life thing for us personally. I/we would love to do something amazing and special with this project. We have some cool ideas. I've just been scared to venture out into the "business" side of it all, so I love your input. I find it extremely valuable because we aren't nearly as experienced as you (and some of the other viewers out there).
@@MeantToBeLindseyB Well, one thing that I caution would be safety in your creations. I don't really deal with "joe homeowner" I do deal with "joe operator" but they also are under the care of a corporation with rules, bosses, and guidance to keep them "out of danger" as well. HOWEVER, I have a responsibility to make sure I've protected them as much as possible. I'm not sure what all liability you could get into with a self propelled lawnmower, if somebody would buy one, lose control and run over the neighbors kids foot. THAT would be my personal worry on just "that" invention. But your husband seems to have a knack or working knowledge of such things, and could easily put that to work in many other things. From helping companies automate their lighting, to whatever. I was looking to modify an electric wheelchare as my "tool cart." Something I could comfortably sit down on in factories, and easily "tool around on" that also had a small area for my tools, and a place to mount my computers. I just bought a used, very small, but heavy made cushman work cart, to eventually modify a little. I just simply couldn't find the wheelchair parts and such to make such an item. You guys probably know "all the haunts" to find those motors, and parts, and to be able to rebuild chairs, deck them out, etc. etc. So I'm not sure how to advise, or even if you have any desire TOO do such a thing, but all he would need to do, is spend some time, come up with various idea, narrow them down to the best, and the best, and the best. And start to assemble them, some prototypes, and slowly get going. I have some GREAT ideas, I don't sell much of. Other ideas are GOOD, and they REALLY took off, and I didn't expect it because the field is HUGE. I can tell him great ways to manufacture custom parts, and cheap / quick vendors, and cheap ways, to draw them up digitally. If he so wanted. I do travel worldwide a lot, but I could easily work and never leave my farm. (Which that is the case for many months out of the year, it just depends on what I'm contracted for at the time.)
We’d love to connect with you privately and chat if you’re up for it. If so, shoot me an email to MeantToBeLindseyB@hotmail.com - I’d love to pick your brain on a couple of things (if you’d be up for it). No pressure though. You’ve already been a great source of information for us, so thank you for that!
As long as the generator is good enough, you should be able to power the motors off the engine. It'll reduce fuel efficiency by increasing magnetic drag on the generator, but it'll work.
Bro you rock. when you said add a Cam so you can cut the grass while sitting on the couch in the house. You can be the AMAZON OF LANDSCAPERS. bUILD with your talent .an army of remote mowers.
Lol for the turning wheels aka caster wheels you could have heated up the adjust lever and bend it so you could attach the wheels vertical instead of horizontal but I'm sure you got it since it was posted over a year ago lol

Awesome you are awesome dude I am a dialysis patient I run out of steam mowing I am an ex computer tech this is a good needed project way to go impressive.
Excellent build. Only changes I would've further considered is to make sure to mitigate rusting of its components by using galvanized bolts/screws, nuts and etc (assuming you already didn't do that), and also I would've secured a plastic protective housing (aka gladware with a top cover) on the wooden board and then placed the electronic components inside the gladware and passed the wires through hole(s) in the top cover and/or the gladware itself. I would chock a cut up piece of plastic bag in the hole with the wires, to keep the interior of plastic housing dry and to keep the electronic components dry and rustproof and protected from effects of the weather. Alternatively, instead of using the cut up piece of plastic bag, I could insteas use a rubber gasket placed in the holes for passing the wires to also achieve the weatherproofing function too. With that said, great job man, keep it up.
@@AChi__ Those are some great suggestions! We have noticed some rusting on some of the bolts. Luckily, the mower stays in the garage most of the time but we will keep this in mind. Thanks!

I have been wanting to build one of these for years, but put it off because it seemed too difficult. I even have a mower i set aside for this project. After watching your step by step video it gave me the bump I needed to order the parts and make it happen finally. Thank you so much for sharing and keep up the great work. Also thank you for posting a parts list!
I'm completely clueless when it comes to all of this, but I'm going to try my best to get all these parts and make this as a gift! I think I can manage. lol Thank you for explaining these concepts in such an easy to grasp way - especially for people like me! ♥
Awesome build, sir. Consider running it on propane. Yes, the little green bottles mine runs very well 3-4 mows per bottle it only got two mows per tank of gas and is much quieter and smells like a forklift you'll need is a regulator I used one from a deepfryer with an adapter for green bottles one end is the bottle the other end goes thru the aircleaner box almost to the carb intake that's it in a nut shell my mower didn't have a adjustable throttle just run and off now it does the gas regulator knob
Regarding battery life: You may be able to use a single U1 Battery. It's about 12v 35Ah battery. You could probably turn the battery 90 degrees and place it centered behind the engine. The extra battery weight may even help with wheel traction. Since your electronics are on a piece of wood, You could probably mount that on top of the U1 battery. It's just a thought. I love your simple, quick and easy design. Almost anyone can do it. I would love to see all the add on you mentioned too. This is the exact mower that many people need ! Thanks for sharing :-)
Brother, you just gave me my next project. I have a bunch of trees that are super low to the ground and eat me up when I mow around and under them. Thank you so much.
Well done! I did something similar in 1988. You covered all the issues very well. I put casters on the front at the outset. It worked well. My only suggestion is to mount the battery behind the drive wheels. This will take weight off the front wheels and allow them to pivot and it will increase traction on the rear. Good luck and have fun!
This is a really great video and you have amazing talent. thank you for all the information. My only suggestion would be add and alternator to charge the battery? keep up the great work!
Yeah, we totally could! If we need more range we will definitely consider adding something like that. The battery has been plenty for our small yard so far.
Wow!! what a great video. Excellent visuals and audio was spot on. So with your Video and my eagerness, by golly, I'm going to make one this Summer!!
I mean absolutely no disrespect to you but ive been in those chairs and it sucks but other than putting snow plows on them i would put a mower deck under one next time. Maybe a brush hog type. Complete with a tow behind bagger. Good video. Well displayed and explained.
Nice video with great info. I've been thinking of doing this also but I want it to have tracks. I have a bank that I always have to weed eat. A build like this with tracks will be perfect.
Hey Friend, I am gathering the parts for my RC mower and picked up the Sabertooth 2x32. I think setting up your motors as MIXED and setting the throttle on the left stick will work better. It will let you control the speed from nothing to full blast very accurately that way instead of basically off and on. The MIX part then will use the other stick and control how the two motors mix their outputs to control turning. You can also wire up both batteries in series and run 24v. which will give more power which will be precisely controllable with a throttle channel. There are also some dip switch pots on the board that need to be setup for radio use. Ill know more soon as its cut the grass time already in Texas and this project has sat too long now.
We considered doing the 2-stick setup but my remote left stick is for airplane throttle, so it doesn't auto center and would make it really hard to stop.
Thanks! Love your instructional video, you to steped through the instructions very well. The wheelchair motors are comin tomorrow. I tested the remote with small dc motor and servo motor. It's all setup for the motor tomorrow!
You’ll love the ryobis! I have one for two summers., it’s the way to make it .. ! Motor driver would work perfect with the rear wheel drive it comes with!

Tom Tom That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
🤣🤣😂😅 you are genius. And then you come out with drill start instead of replacing string and carb. Your awesome man
I watched these videos a few months ago, and now I'm rewatching them as I'm about to start another project. I love everything about this!
That’s awesome!
Good ideas here. Thanks!
Maybe a " bumper mechanism" off like a robo vac or something heavier
I think a regular kill switch would get crushed when it hit something harder and disable the whole unit.
Yes i know the value of life VS a switch argument
But why work harder and more $ when you can work smarter ? .
Wow man! This is absolutely sweet. Its elegant and seems reliable and easy to service. A lot of people build really complex systems that are over my head as a beginner but this is really cool and not over though. Really neat, thanks for making the video explaining everything
lol when I heard "and the bolts work just like you expect bolts to work" I can picture someone actually stopping the video to google it pfft i cracked up
Same here.
😂
There are roomba-style automatic mowers now.
@@SirFrag32 Really? Please tell me that it can detect nagging!
@@dirttdude Not that I'm aware of, but you can schedule it!
Great idea! Thanks!
@@MeantToBeLindseyB try and find a regulator off one of those small grills that has the adjustable knob to regulate the flame that way you wont need a inline valve,
Also get a brass 90 elbow and drill a hole the size of the end if brass in air filter cover directly over carb leave filter in ,
Now attach brass to cover
( How i did mine is i drilled a hole big enough in end of brass for a quick pin or cotter pin i put the brass thru , then a large flat washer and the cotter pin )
Attach your hose from that to the regulator, empty gas from mower,
To start turn on gas at regulator untill you can just about hear it. Should start on first or second pull.
Your RPM is now regulated buy your propane regulator.
Just find the mowers sweet spot.
Good luck
Had this idea when looking for self propelled mower amazed noone has made one to sell i would definitely buy
Seriously! Why isnt this already on the market lol

Hey. I’m christys brother. She lived down where y’all are but now she’s back in ky. I was the one in a car wreck and now I’m a wheelchair also. I’m building one of these but kind bigger. This is really helping me. Thank you for the vid
Hope you’re doing well! Glad this video helps. Feel free to find me on FB if you want to connect. 😊
Incredible work, man! Thanks for sharing this with us. You’re a genius! Much support!!
I’ve gotta say… man, you’re a genius!
You did a great job at explaining and solving some complex problems and have inspire me to try making something like this . Great job thanks man.
Wow... and with a cheap little camera and goggles, it would be FPV mowing from your bed. I like this a lot.
holy cow, much respect for you, I'm really impressed
As a wheelchair user trying to figure the grass cutting thing out. You Sir. have helped in that area.
I happen to have an extra electric wheelchair not using with 2 good motors and batteries. Have the mower!
So now to order the rest and by this weekend I will be sitting on the porch cutting grass! Wo0t.
That's awesome! Good luck!
Hahahahaha
as of May 2020 I just finished the build on my remote control lawn mower .and I'm extremely happy with it .I too am disabled and it is very exciting to mow the lawn without worry .well not too much worry. thanks to you and others on TH-cam for the idea.❤🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
That’s awesome! So glad you were able to create one too!
I see a movie coming..The killer mower" fall asleep and mower ends up 6 houses down mowing thru gardens etc. Lol
You are making every poor home owners dream come true!
Thats rad! thanks for sharing, you could even try to add a tow bar and connect your wheelchair for a bit of fun :D
LOL that would be fun
Or how about a grass catcher so you don't have to rake the yard being in a wheelchair that would help a lot leaving your grass clippings on The Lawns can cause it to create moss and choke out your grass
@@arminbender8702 I'm a massive fan of the lawn mower with a built in mulcher. My grass has never looked so good
Bro your a genius! It amazes me how the handicapped have this stigma of helplessness when in actuality they can do everything other people can do and often better! Keep up the good work and maybe consider marketing your creation;. It seem to me this could help a lot of people with limited mobility!
Good job, now i no how to do it, thought it was easy, just power the 12v to 6v for the esc and stuff.
I did find another video that shows a gentleman that did something similar but they used the electric mower and I know on the other video your husband talks about wanting to do it with the electric mower so I think I might go that route using your idea maybe combining the two and see what I can come up with
That would be cool! Let us know how the build goes and let us know if you have any questions that we can help with.
4:46 at this portion of the video I was just wondering if he added the threaded rod to connect the two gears in the back? Did the gears already have a hole in them or did he have to add that?
The gears I have and the ones I’ve seen do not have a hole like that to add the threaded rod so I was just curious
thank you.
@@AdamzStudio777 Yeah, the motors had those holes already. We used the threaded rods to give them strength and some adjustability.
add a small alternator, keep the batteries up
Yep 👍

*****Since first creating this Pt. 2 video, we have gotten some electrical tools that have made this process a lot easier. They are listed in the description of the video.*****
As a refresher, here is the initial build:

God bless both of you guys. Hope people hire you or you setto sell these kitsin the future.
Love you and your imagination.
You are brilliant Sir, I thought of something like a RC Lawnmower, but not as good as your ideas.
As long as the generator is good enough, you should be able to power the motors off the engine. It'll reduce fuel efficiency by increasing magnetic drag on the generator, but it'll work.
Push mowers don’t have a Generator.
This was one of the best diy explanation videos I’ve seen. Thanks!
This is a mini zero turn, impressive

Here is part 3 where we shows how he did the wiring. th-cam.com/video/jQNjKKBeNHo/w-d-xo.html
The parts are in except my mower, the wheels, and the motors. excited to get started!
Thanks!
@@MeantToBeLindseyB Great!

Be sure to also check out the wiring video too (linked in this video’s description) if you need help with the wiring.
Awesome build, sir. Consider running it on propane. Yes, the little green bottles mine runs very well 3-4 mows per bottle it only got two mows per tank of gas and is much quieter and smells like a forklift you'll need is a regulator I used one from a deepfryer with an adapter for green bottles one end is the bottle
the other end goes thru the aircleaner box almost to the carb intake that's it in a nut shell my mower didn't have a adjustable throttle just run and off now it does the gas regulator knob
Great idea!! Now we have a new project for this spring! Thanks!
Awesome job building that rig! A remote controlled diy mower seems like a difficult task but you make it look easy! Now I just need to build my own
Now you know how to. :)
Excellent communication. I've seen that the kill switch is a ground, the spring arm is moved where the bracket shorts the coil IIRC.
To add: you could use a bosch style relay and have the signal send ground to that handle-bar kill switch, which already has it's own wire.
We’ll look into that for next time. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips!
And I love the video you explained everything really well not like other videos I have searched. Thanks.
Brother, you just gave me my next project. I have a bunch of trees that are super low to the ground and eat me up when I mow around and under them. Thank you so much.
This is by far one of the coolest things i've seen in awhile. Awesome how he explains everything in detail , fun project!!!
Well done! I did something similar in 1988. You covered all the issues very well. I put casters on the front at the outset. It worked well. My only suggestion is to mount the battery behind the drive wheels. This will take weight off the front wheels and allow them to pivot and it will increase traction on the rear. Good luck and have fun!
Since this video, we did actually switch to rotating casters in the front. It made a huge difference!
Thank you! This video has put me on track to do this project. I can’t walk much anymore, so I’ve been wanting to build an RC mower to save my energy.
His voice has a calming effect which I like when I'm learning something new I've been dreaming about doing something exactly like this for a long time. I've been in high tech all my career and last 15yrs was for HP R&D for learning how to build computers a year in advance. I'm a real gearhead too. My hobby has been building and repairing cars. So with your Video and my eagerness, by golly, I'm going to make one this Summer!!
Can’t wait to see yours!
Awesome! I need to make one of those to deal with my constant vertigo.
I enjoyed your build. I may have to try that on one of my mowers in order to mow steep ditch banks. Keep of the good work.
A build like this with tracks will be perfect.
me too, it'd pay for itself in one season
