    I'm a Canadian mechanical power engineer, and the lab you were in is used for doing boiler feed water testing. That lab you were in was not for creating things. Also the little room out on the floor by the turbo generators is a quiet room. The operating floor would have been very noisy with the turbo generators running.

    I have worked in a Petrochemical Plant / Lab since 1979, it was built in 1966. Half the associated plants are now shutdown and even in the existing labs there are many items like this stashed away in stores or cupboards. Not much of that glassware is used anymore, there are more automated ways of doing the testing.

    This generator has a DC exciter. That's pretty late in 1968, most have switched to rectifiers by that point. At the 30 minute mark they show a 3000RPM/1000RPM gear reducer to spin the exciter. I've never seen that before either, that's cool and unique.

      The stations are abandoned because of technology marching on.
      The station I worked in was built in 1925. when I joined the company, they had 8 units running.
      the first 3 were installed about the time the station was built, 4 and 5 were installed around the 40's
      Unit 6 came in ariound the 50's
      Unit 7 and 8 in the 60's
      unit 1, 2 and 3 were only around a couple years after I was hired .
      they used boilers called STOKERS. they were kind of dedicated to the unit they were built for.
      later, valves where added to allow sharing steam between the units.
      When 1, 2 and 3 turbines where retired, the stokers were retired with them.
      unit 4 had a cracked shaft and was retired early.
      U4 was piped in to more modern boilers that used Barrel pulverizers, they had steel balls in them the size of tennis balls and the barrel would spin and the steel balls would fall on the coal and pulverize it. HUGE AMOUNT OF NOISE from these units.
      As the steam piping was tied to unit 5 only U4 turbine was retired.
      unit 5 ran for 5 years, but it had seal problems as it had hydrogen cooling.
      eventually, cost vs production outweighed the value to run the unit so Unit 5 was retired.
      Unit 6 was built with an experimental boiler.
      One of the old boilers for unit 5 was reconfigured for Cyclone fire boxes. They were supposed to be more effecient.
      The test must have been successful, they ran this boiler for years and built a dedicated Cyclone fired boiler for unit 6.
      The cyclone made the heat to make steam but the slag was difficult to deal with. it cooled fast, had to run from the Cyclone fire box
      to the slag tap where it had a habit of freezing up and it had to be beat and broken open, usually while the furnace was running.
      Unit 6 was using normal pneumatic systems for controls. Tech upgrades came in the form of computer controls which were successful and it ran for years on these controls.
      Unit 7 and Unit 8 would get computer controls much later after a company reorganization where control rooms would be combined, Two operators would become one, jobs would shift roles, etc.
      Unit 6 would be deemed too expensive to run and it and its Cyclone firebox boiler would be retired as the boiler was dedicated to unit 6.
      Unit 7 and 8 were basically as technically advanced as they could be. basically, there was nothing else they could do to improve them.
      These units were very advanced when built but time brings on new advances in tech and the old tech just gets pushed back.
      However, they had another fault in their system, they burnt coal.
      as the world began to get aware of the environment and more concerned about air quality more money was spent on cleaning the ash from the stack. almost every other year they would be installing better equipment costing millions to meet or exceed the laws to keep the air clean.
      At some point, the technology was there but the people demanded the station be closed.
      They enlisted a political figure who beat his chest and said the station was bad for the environment and it has to be closed.
      They battled this politician for years but eventually they had to shut down.
      Technology can only take you so far.

    Wonder if the plant needed to be reactivated how many billions it would cost?
    Having worked in manufacturing plants with in house power generation looking at those lockers , fire safety stations and such I can just imagine the old guys who must have been there for 15 or 20 years running things, the smells and noises of the machinery come to mind as well. As well as the grease and dust!
    The language on the signage maybe different from my own but anyone who has worked in such a place can relate. Long hours fueled by luke warm coffee on the night shift next to asbestos covered steam lines during my early working life flood back watching this. Decades of history for those who worked here in this plant no doubt.
    Amazing work guys!

    What an amazing place! And I cannot believe the size of the chemistry department. I guess all of that was purely to monitor and adjust the chemistry of the water used in the plant. I never really stopped to think about how important that must be for a steam turbine system. If the chemistry make up of the water is not spot on just imagine the damage that could be done to the entire system with various build ups. So surprising to see it so well kept so long after the plant was closed.

    • @antoniojuric8185
      @antoniojuric8185 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's right, water is very important in steam plants. Water samples are taken once a day and analyzed. The water is treated with various chemicals because in the case of "unclean" water, the consequences on the steam turbine are enormous.

    • @holysirsalad
      @holysirsalad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Water quality is critical but that doesn't necessarily require an entire complex. That job is usually accomplished by a much smaller lab.
      This plant, Banhida, originally used low grade coal from a nearby mine. It had a pretty good run - construction began in 1929 and it opened in 1935, closing in 2004. Looks like the last major overhaul was in the 1960s, so that equipment must have quite a few hours on it! I suspect they were performing tests on much more than the primary water. At 34:10 they come across some jars with dry samples in them. At least one of them appears to contain ash. Others look like flakes of creosote, some just look like lignite coal. Since this plant was upgraded a number of much more modern and clean gas and oil plants were built in and around Budapest. I don't know what this plant might have been fitted with but Hungary's largest coal power plant, Mátra, was equipped with flue gas desulphurization in 2000. Lignite coal is one of the worst for sulphur content and sulphuric acid not only is an pollutant around the area but quickly corrodes the internals of the boiler and flue gas system. I'm guessing that the lab was monitoring conditions of various parts of the plant as it aged, analyzing the chemistry within the boiler and stack, as well as the fuel itself.

    Been watching alot these videos. This, and the way of just seeing life in general. We are such wasteful creatures...Use all these resources, metal, plastics, wood, etc etc. Then just to sit there to decay. From the bunker videos, all the metals and concrete used. Just to be used for a couple decades then to sit abandoned. To the machineries in other videos. And you wonder why we have a shortage of products, and the state of living is going to hell. Just a sad truth of how we are wasteful in more ways to 1.
    Anyways, keep showing us these awesome videos crew. I do love the history of it all. From cold war bunkers, the missle silos you visited in the States, to this one. It is all very interesting.

      @@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath I enjoy your productions, but since I work as a consultant in the US power industry, please take this caution. In spite of the antics you've seen the Proper People get away with in US power plants, please do know that for any US facility with security equaling what you saw at this Hungary plant, it is potentially classified as critical infrastructure even though it is not in operation. If you, as a foreign national on a travel visa, ever got caught taking unauthorized photos or drone footage inside a secure area, you might be suspected of terror or espionage. Best case scenario: you spend a couple days in an interview room with the FBI and/or CIA, lose your photo and video equipment to an opaque federal evidence procedure, and possibly have your visa suspended just prior to being deposited at the nearest embassy or consulate for repatriation. If they decide they really don't like you for some reason -- for example, your passport includes stamps from fromer Eastern Bloc countries -- you'll wish you were back to dealing with the Italians. Anyway, keep up the good work, but stay safe!

    Just found your channel. New Subscriber. I noticed you produced a couple of art books detailing your travels. I was wondering if you had thought of adding a PDF / E-book format? I prefer reading this type of content on my iPad. Very interested in purchasing a copy but not a real book they take up to much room.

    Nice one Bob, probably the best explore yet in terms of cinematography, I really enjoyed this one hopefully there are more of the same. I think you just took the crown off the proper people for my favourite explorer with this one. Keep up the good work. 💪

      Thanks Leslie, I have always been more focussed on making pictures (I make pictures in abandoned places for 20 years now) and now it’s slowly changing to video since the channel is doing a bit better lately. Another thing is I often visit unknown and dangerous places so not always have the chance to stay there for long. Anyways, some cool episodes are coming up😇

      @@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath In the Netherlands, Harlingen there was this abandoned shipyard. I'd been walking passed the fences a few times to scout it out did not see or hear any dogs. Hopped the fence and within seconds a German Shepherd came sprinting out of seemingly nowhere. I tried jumping the fence again but before I was over the dog got my leg. They are remarkably strong the dog pulled me back to the ground. Started mauling my leg and back it had me pinned for a good few minutes. Adrenaline kicked in and I went full survival mode. I don't know how but somehow I managed to pull myself up and over the fence. Adrenaline still pumping when I arrived at the doctor. I believe I ended up with around 50 stitches. Mostly upper leg and my back. Lesson learned, always make noise before hopping the fence to see if something comes running towards you

    Hi Bob! absolutely exceptional video! and then of course we love you, but Elaina is absolutely adorable!!! she has a disarming smile...🥰 I hope to see her again in some of your other videos, and if she doesn't read these comments, could you bring back my compliments? having said that, seeing you wandering around the chemical laboratories, in the midst of all that glass, I could not help thinking, that if the solute "guys" had entered they would have destroyed everything...I always think so, the maximum they could challenge you it is the problem of the dangerousness of what you do, but only and simply for your safety. Great job! can't wait for the next video...😉

    What is the purpose of chemical department inside the a power plant, especially that big one like we see in this power plant?

    • @holysirsalad
      @holysirsalad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only guess as to why it was so large but in steam systems proper chemistry of the water is extremely important. The water must be kept clear of any minerals that can form deposits on the inside of the boiler and on the turbine blades. Those minerals of course come in with whatever water is added to the system but also the metals of the equipment itself as it ages. Metals levels are something the technicians would keep an eye on as a sudden spike in a specific alloy would suggest a failure in a specific component. The water must also be kept free of dissolved oxygen to prevent rust internally. This plant may also have used anti-corrosion additives in the primary water loop as well
      The same practices apply to home heating boilers and large engines!
