  • How to replace the starter drive (bendix) in a Model A Ford (1928 to 1931).
To remove the starter from the car, first disconnect the battery cable at the battery. Next disconnect the battery cable at the starter, then disconnect the starter rod from the starter switch by unscrewing it at the joint about 2" up from the switch itself. Then remove the 3 bolts that hold the starter in place. Now that you've got the starter out, watch this video to see how to replace the starter drive.
NOTE that, in hindsight, I could have just replaced the broken starter drive bolt. After shooting the video I found that I could remove the remaining piece of the broken bolt from the starter drive by simply turning it using the end of my finger. New starter drive bolt sets are available from any of the Model A Suppliers (Snyder's, Tam's, Smith and Jones, etc.). These are the special thin headed bolts and special washers to hold the drive spring in place and to hold the drive on the shaft. Ford used 5/16" (A-11382-SE) on some and 3/8" (A-11382-S) on others. Just order the correct size for your starter drive.

Good video. Very informative especially since I'm going to be doing this job very shortly. Constructive criticism. In your future videos try to watch the yeah and ums. It really makes the video hard to watch. And I understand you're probably not a professional content creator, but like I said just something to think about for the future! Still a great video.

Newton, Keep the original Bendix drive, extract the broken piece, buy new bolts, and have the original available if the new Bendix drive fails.

He keeps repeating himself. Hard to follow what he is doing.
