I know nothing about horses and horse racing but I was wondering why the two jockeys at the end were whipping their horses so savagely. Does it actually make the horses run faster? Seems a bit cruel to me.
Indeed. I read that there's an 8-strike limit for chases with the whip and 7 for flat racing, but it's not enforced by the stewards. I've read that the whips are made of soft foam and give off a popping sound, rather than inflicting pain. Not sure about that, but that's what I read anyway.
