China - TieFa - Steam Passenger & Main Road - November 2012 (Part 8)

- SY1771 crosses National Road G203 by a level crossing, on the way back to Diaobingshan from Kangping, via Faku.
This SY, number 1771, was built in 1999 and is the penultimate standard gauge steam loco built in the world (with the exception of Tornado). The last built, SY1772, which is plated as 1999 but was outshopped in early 2000, is also based on the TieFa system.
Amazing video! That's the most lovely whistle I've ever heard on a steam loco yet!
The driver plays the whistle beautifully .... Andy
Tbh they sound a heck of a lot better than the air horns they sound more frequently in China.
That crossing bell sounds exactly like a chevorlet door chime
Probably made in the same Chinese factory !! Andy
They do things differently in China.
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam Chevrolet is American
@@RobloxGamer6422 I know that, of course, but you can be absolutely certain that a large number of components (such as the open door alarm) is made in China for Chevrolet - Andy

@@captainminecraft631 CHINESE RAILROAD CROSSING
I’m from Beijing (lives here in the states), 1772’s front was modified to look like KD6-487, all 3 locos only come out at the Steam Locomotive Festival in January, but if you are lucky, you might encounter one of them, as many film crews make train scenes of movies or shows here.
I'd love to see one of the US QJ's in action one day. We'll see! ...... Andy
Andy and Dandan Fisher - Steam Around the World Right
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam finally, 1772’s front was modified back to the original shape! However it’s now carry only one lamp, making it look unique.
@@rickd3777 Interesting. Thank you .... Andy
Oh I've heard them already. Take a look at -
USA - Diesel 1 - Norfolk & Southern at Tyrone, PA
No bells or sirens on this crossing though!
crazy to think there was a standard gauge steam locomotive built for revenue service in 1999.
They carried on building steam because it simply made economic sense. China has vast quantities of coal but not much oil. Their early demise was because (as with western countries) the steam locos were eventually seen as an embarrassment. The Chinese authorities felt the need to modernise to show the west they are a serious power! There is still a handful left working but they're now in their last few months of life. Trains are my favorite vehicles my dream is to drive one of these when I become an engineer!!!
You should start as a volunteer on a heritage railway line. Where are you in the world? - Andy
The driver uses both his air horn and chime whistle here because he's crossing a busy major road. The whistle has its design origins in the USA. Chinese steam locos are copies of Russian designs which, in turn, are copies of American designs !
@drencemangalindan4840 They're copies of Russian designs which were themselves copies of US designs .... Andy
I rate this crossing 10 out of 10 cuz this crossing is so satisfying even this crossing is in roblox
the steam train horn sounds freaky
color color whistle
The whistle sounds ghostly
I heard recently that Steam is nearly gone in China.
I gotta ask since I’m a mini fan of Chinese Steam locomotives due to how similar they are with American Steam locomotives. Do you know what has happened to SY1771 or 1772? Were they preserved?
I have to admit that I'm not 100% certain. I think that both may still exist on the Tiefa system but I haven't visited there for some years. I had heard they were running enthusiast specials. I'm sure someone reading this will correct me! ...... Andy
1770, 1771 and 1772 would come out every year in December as a tourist event, they would also come out if there is a film crew filming some scene about trains.
I've never thought I could watch a steam train working these days, you can see those only in the museums!
Well this was filmed in 2012. These locos are all out of service now. But if you look at the link below - these are the very last hard working steam locos in the world - still to be seen right now (2017)

George Plays It's a whistle
There is no right or wrong answers about the air horns the Chinese locos use because it really depends on their techniques
I'm afraid not. It could be made locally as this railway system is part of a local business network and not officially part of the China Rail system. As a point of interest, the sign says "Be careful + Train". In my travels around China I find there is no standard crossing style or warning, although many of them are similar.
The little rectangular sign says “in case of red light - stop, in case of no lights - out of service”

0:53 Did that steam locomotive use a horn or was that another nearby train??
All Chinese steam locos were fitted with both steam whistle and air horn. The driver uses them alternatively in this video .... Andy
Nice and I like the white light which means to yield and the red light is that the train is close to you
Yes. I think in the UK we'd say the white light means "Proceed with caution". Thanks for your comment .... Andy
1:08 The train was puffing out so much smoke I can hardly believe how many!
It was about -15c at the time. It's steam that's coming out not smoke. At really cold temperatures there's always a lot of steam formed by condensation ...... Andy
of course... (high up left next to the cross sign).
I think there would be a camera in most western countries in that situation too although the Chinese do overdo it a bit! .... Andy

This is a re-visit for me as I've seen the video before, but it's well worth another look. Needless to say I prefer the steam whistle. They don't lean on the whistle as heavily as we do here in the USA. Over here we hdl the whistle open all the way through the grade crossing.
