  • SY1771 crosses National Road G203 by a level crossing, on the way back to Diaobingshan from Kangping, via Faku.
This SY, number 1771, was built in 1999 and is the penultimate standard gauge steam loco built in the world (with the exception of Tornado). The last built, SY1772, which is plated as 1999 but was outshopped in early 2000, is also based on the TieFa system.

I’m from Beijing (lives here in the states), 1772’s front was modified to look like KD6-487, all 3 locos only come out at the Steam Locomotive Festival in January, but if you are lucky, you might encounter one of them, as many film crews make train scenes of movies or shows here.

They carried on building steam because it simply made economic sense. China has vast quantities of coal but not much oil. Their early demise was because (as with western countries) the steam locos were eventually seen as an embarrassment. The Chinese authorities felt the need to modernise to show the west they are a serious power! There is still a handful left working but they're now in their last few months of life. The driver uses both his air horn and chime whistle here because he's crossing a busy major road. The whistle has its design origins in the USA. Chinese steam locos are copies of Russian designs which, in turn, are copies of American designs !

I'm afraid not. It could be made locally as this railway system is part of a local business network and not officially part of the China Rail system. Yes, you're right about 1771. It's explained in the clip description. 1771 and 1772 are both plared as 1999 built although 1772 was actually outshopped in early 2000. It was cold there but personally I'd sooner be at -10c than +45c !

I don't even believe it's automatic. I think it's operated by a switch in that shake.

Well, this was filmed in 2012, as you can see. Since then almost all has disappeared. However, there's still one location in the far North West of the country where steam is hauling coal out of an opencast mine. Please see my playlist - th-cam.com/play/PLNKEdhmODMJxI2j-Vg4jtbeZqw2GfatEM.html

Great shot - love the SY class...... wasn't 1771 the second last steam loco built for standard commercil service in the world (1999) - her sister 1772 being the last?
Anyway, glad it was you guys out in that cold and not me. It's +45 here today (C of course!!)

This is a re-visit for me as I've seen the video before, but it's well worth another look. Needless to say I prefer the steam whistle. They don't lean on the whistle as heavily as we do here in the USA. Over here we hdl the whistle open all the way through the grade crossing. Here's NKP 765 sporting a N&W freight whistle blasting through a rural grade crossing on an employee special. Maybe you've already seen it. Enjoy. th-cam.com/video/edwLFONrVUk/w-d-xo.html

1:02 a fucking stream train! We got rid of steam trains in the UK in the 1960s! Naughty diesels took over. Now most of our trains are electric.
