Great tips! Honestly my favorite part of ultras is the atmosphere and friendliness. It's incredible. Yes it's a race, but it's more a competition against the weather, terrain, and miles. The energy and goodwill of the other runners will help carry you through. I've chucked pacing plans on most of my races to run faster or slower with interesting people. Luckily with ultras, they're so long there'll be time to fix the oops later, but still make incredible friends and memories.
Really helpful, thanks!! Hoping to do one in a couple months. Was planning on a road marathon, then figured I'd enjoy 31 miles of trail more than 26 miles on pavement (even though the road goes through the redwoods and is a gorgeous course). We'll see if I end up doing it this year!
Go for it! I did that, skipping road marathons and going right to 50k, and I absolutely love it. I do trail marathons now for "fun easy" races! 2 years ago I would never believe I'd run longer than a half marathon!
@@LittleMrsW honestly, I'm so bummed I "wasted" so many years trying to regain my youthful speed before just going long! I'm having more fun with less injuries than I ever did doing 5/10ks and halfs! Have a blast!
Great comment on slowing down pre aid station & fuelling after. For me it’s finishing not racing so that works a treat. TY.
Glad you took something away from the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

You hit it on the head here! Ultras are such different races and atmospheres then any road races or triathlon races I do!

That sounds beautiful! Yes I somehow convinced my friend to skip the marathon distance and go right for this 50k trail run, he really enjoyed it!

@@Kelly_Ben haha, I haven't even done my first one yet and I'm already looking at a trail marathon next spring (Lake Sonoma, CA).
