That is wonderful, I know the people that wrote the song always wanted it to be a celebration. I am connected to them (the band) glad it makes you happy ☺️
This is my favorite Happy Birthday song. I send it to people on their birthday. I just had one last weekend so you know I had to pull it out. It makes me happy
I had just returned from serving in Northern Ireland. I was 23 yrs old but already a veteran. It was the height of the Troubles, Bobby Sand had just died in Long Kesh. I was lost with no idea what was happening in my life or where I was going. On leave I just sat for hours rewinding and watching Claire Grogan sing this song on TOTP. Somehow I moved on. Thanks
I had this album from Altered Images as well as Pinky Blue and I just happened to be playing " HAPPY BIRTHDAY " when my father walked in and With him being old school and a World War II , Veteran, I had expected him to tell me to turn it down or off. But as he took his place on the couch and the song finished he asked me if I would play it agian for him. I did not understand it at all , but I played it agian and he told me to turn it up, I was like, oh ,really . I would come home some times in the early evening and then I would get to the back door and hear Altered Images playing, rather loudly. God Damn, I miss my father...
I got to share a lot of music with my father before he died. We spent a lot of weekends together doing stuff and playing music was a part of it. Not really that surprising since my dad formed the backbone of my music appreciation growing up. I just introduced him to a lot of music that he didn’t know about. Some of my fondest memories of him
Great song. Just makes you happy whilst listening. I served my national service at the West German federal navy 1981. Tough times. But listening to Claire was just a pain reliever.
Thanks for the kind words you all . . .it's almost magical the way a certain time, place, mood, song and images can work together to create a life-lasting memory.
I just turned 47 today on June 11th. I sought out the lyrics to this song as I didn't know who the band was that sang it. I'm glad to find it and to find Altered Images. I don't want to go back to 1981, I need to back to 1981! I would have been 5 years old back then and didn't know this song existed.
Lovely! Truly amazing ❤️ The UK 🇬🇧 is the magical place that blesses all of us with beautiful bands and beautiful music like this band, Altered Images!
The best catchy crazy song on early MTV I waited 17 years to find this video and I could be happy on mtv 2 in 1999 before you tube they used to play classic MTV and I watched and watched for years before they ran that twofer I still have it on cdrom . This was the golden age of new wave I wasn’t a fan but I loved some of these videos . One step beyond, I’m in love with a working girl . Goody two shoes, I might like you better if we slept together , love plus one , Mexican radio , at least the music was fun . I miss the 80 s . Every time I hear happy birthday I smile love you Clare !!!!
This one of my favourite birthday songs by an excellent band! When I wrote about '60s Scottish bands [scotbeat blog] it was an eye opener. I hadn't heard of many Scot pop bands at a teenager in the States.
@@darlenegoodwin They weren't popular in Cali where I grew up so was unfamiliar with them besides what my spouse has mentioned. I've seen a documentary and features about them over the last 15 years but used up my space between a couple of blogs and won't be adding more. I heard that their manager locked them in a room before a show besides ripping them off. During interviews with their producers, they did a good job to belittle them as musicians.
@@khorrumg The terms are interchangeable for many, but I agree. MTV made both genres famous because the rock and pop stars of the day thought that music videos were a joke. MTV had nothing to play except this type of music which ended being a gift to a teenager like me in the 80s and made a lot of the folks famous, for a bit, at least.
@@baronmeduse yes I know!! But here in the states in the early 80’s our only exposure to bands like this was MTV. I used to stay up very late at night and would get exposed to lots of cool English bands. Blancmange!! Stranglers!! PIL!! Good times
@@toddwhite1036 Ah, now I understand. I saw Blancmange were great (and still exist). I saw them live during the time their second album came out. The singer was from around the same area I lived in at the time.
+Dennis Sisterson There's also a clip of Tom Jones in the sixties with someone who looks like the 11th Doctor on drums - can't remember the song though
I was at college in Ipswich then aged 18. Shops were boarded up all over the country under Mrs Thatcher’s new government but the music. Altered Images, The Specials, The Human League, OMD, The Go Gos, and Kraftwerk was the best!
Today I turned 67. It's my birthday. AND, every birthday since 1981, I play this song. It keeps me young.
That is wonderful, I know the people that wrote the song always wanted it to be a celebration. I am connected to them (the band) glad it makes you happy ☺️
@@gillianmcdaid4745 Wow! Thank you for this personal note. What joy you must have to be connected with such creative, inspiring people!
That's great, you are more than welcome!

54 yesterday and I have heard of this to my playlist of birthday songs. It's so happy! 😊
I'm 56 today and love this music! I miss the 80's🎉🎉🎉

Happy Birthday is not on the Pinky Blue Album.

There's something very addictive about Altered Images. The guitar, the voice, FUN. Just wonderful
this debude Thursday 1st October 1981 on my 11th birthday on top of the pops how many others shared that
Remember Dead Pop Stars?
I turned 60 today, and what better song to play and jump about to🕺
Sublime Clare Grogan. If they could bottle this performance it would be the ultimate mood lifter!
❤❤so many happy memories, born in 1973
Aw man I want the 80’s back. I can still smell it🥰
You can smell it! The clove cigarettes. The hair spray. 80's forever!
Brilliant Song Lovely Claire ❤️❤️❤️
They called it "New Wave" and it was glorious!
Great song. Just makes you happy whilst listening. I served my national service at the West German federal navy 1981. Tough times. But listening to Claire was just a pain reliever.
Heard it on BFBS Berlin.
I’m 63 and play this every birthday, just to annoy my family, love it
She was just ridiculously cute!!! Lol. Happy memories.
So long ago. if only we could travel back to the amazing 80s. you just had've been there.
Gregory's girl
This song will always remind me of Terri Hemmeritt and XRT Chicago. It was the jingle that she played right before announcing birthday's of the day.
There's nothing like 80s pop music. I miss it.
Thanks for the kind words you all . . .it's almost magical the way a certain time, place, mood, song and images can work together to create a life-lasting memory.
Her cute voice is totally infectious ,even japanese bands tried to emulate her
My bday today and couldn't get this song out of my mind...... good times!!!!!!
Now 40 years later, this has grown on me and always makes me smile!
Turned 68 today and a friend sent this to me, brought back happy memories. Feeling blessed.
Someone played this in the office guy or another colleague’s birthday, unmistakable intro, brilliant song 😊
Have this on repeat today for my 50th birthday! Loved this when i was a kid in the 80s.

Wow, Happy Birthday, I am 12 again! 1981
I was 12 in 1981 too. Bought this from Woolworths and played it endlessly. Great times.

I remember this song from Sixteen Candles, the most 80’s movie of the 80’s !
Wow! Brings back good memories.
Used to wait for TOTP every Thursday !
Loved Clare and the band. Always looked like they were having fun. This must have been made for TOTP as different guitar arrangement.
In '80s "new wave" music, the bass line often led the backing, and and guitar parts were subordinate. Here is a classic example.
Meanwhile, today in mainstream "pop" "music", there is no tune, notes or actual content!
'Nu Wave' was Tom Petty and his shitty Heartbreakers...this is Post Punk, I beg to differ, But hey, we're all hear to give opinions, so I value yours

Subtle Dub influence, but also Talking Heads. But also some Peter Hook from Joy Division.
Excellent point, one more reason that I love New Wave.
Klasse Video, kannte ich noch nicht! Danke für das Video meiner Lieblingsband der 80´ties!
Such a fun song, miss early MTV!!
