    Taylor, as a person who frequents Cedar Point, I must say that you need to make the seat belt as tight as possible without pushing the bar down further than it needs to be.

    • @stompingpeak2043
      @stompingpeak2043 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You push the bars down until you're secure with room and of course you belt in properly. then push your legs against the bar hard so the ride op cant staple you. Isn't this a known thing among coaster people?

      @anobject9622 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stompingpeak2043When I went on el toro, I just sat still and got stapled by the ride op and genuinely hated the ride because of it, but when I rerode it later that day, I pushed my legs a bit higher so the guy couldn't push the restraint down as much and that instantly became my favourite coaster.

  • @janeilnold5863

    I think the roughness adds to the fun of it to be honest. You can never really go onto an older ride and expect it to be smooth. Magnum is a classic and I have fun with it. If you are more used to the newer, smoother rides like Millennium and Gatekeeper, then you will probably not enjoy this ride. If you are into the bumps and shakes a wooden coaster can give you, then you will like Magnum. I love smooth rides, but I love the classic "bump you around" rides too.
    Also a note to new riders or people who don't like to be "beaten up" by rides. Ride in the first car. The first car is a whole different experience from the last one (that's typical on pretty much any ride). Magnum is a bit more gentle in the first car. You may get the bumps and roughness, but you don't get popped up and down and whipped around like in the last car. So ride in front unless you want bruises and whiplash.

    Generally speaking, if your're younger than Magnum XL-200, you don't get Magnum XL-200. It's may not be the best steel roller coaster out there anymore, but it's definitely still my favorite.

    • @coasterfollower8621
      @coasterfollower8621 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Park Connoisseur Magnum is all about the ejector air time and it has such a different experience than coasters today. to this day its in my top 5 favorite coasters and I'm only 15. It's because I love the air time. coasters don't have to be smooth to be good, often the more shaky ones like magnum are better

    • @stinkyloot
      @stinkyloot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Park Connoisseur Exactly what I was gonna say. If you are younger and grew up with all the crazy stuff that started coming out in the mid 90's and on, then the Magnum prob won't do much for you. I remember all of the hype the year it opened, and I waited almost 2 hours to get on it. Before that, the Gemini was the biggest ride in the park. Everyone had the feeling of conquering the Magnum after riding it, and I believe that was actually the slogan at the time. It was much smoother during the first few years, but I still usually head straight to the Magnum first when I walk into the park.

      This is a really ridiculous statement. So are you saying that you can't give a ride an honest review because it was built in 1947? 1950? What about the corkscrew? That was the first ride to have three inversions and the second to have an inversion period. That's a rough ride too, but I don't see people jumping to defend that Ride. It was revolutionary for its time, wasnt it? The point is the quality of rides need to be assessed on how they are today, not 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago. It doesn't the can't appreciate the history of it. You can say a ride is rough and unridable while still pointing out that it was one of the best of its time

It started the coaster wars......wait, what? IT DIDN'T? (cut to a pic of Bandit at Yamiorland in Japan). OK, so the coaster that was the first ever hyper (cut to a pic of the now defunct 70 metre shuttle coaster at Fuji Q Hilands). Geez Japan, what is it with having all these coasters that beat Magnum? This is a classic ride! One of my favorites at Cedar Park which is my home park. It’s historic as well and helped break barriers down. Without Magnum there would be no 300 or 400 foot roller coasters. This was built in 1989. Of course it will have some roughness but the view on this ride is amazing. The beach looks amazing! The Magnum is an oldie but a goodie! Ride it again next season!

    I think everyone's opinion will depend a lot on how old they are. My first trip to CP was in late August of 88 when the only coasters were Blue Streak, Mine Ride, Corkscrew, Wildcat, Gemini, and Iron Dragon. there were no lines, and I had the time of my life. We went back at the same time the next year, and we had no clue they had added Magnum. There was no internet, no twitter, no nothing. I was an 8 year old kid who was playing baseball all summer.
    Nothing has even come close to the feeling of seeing Magnum for the first time. We could see it driving up, it was 2 very tall red hills. I asked my dad what that was because I didn't remember seeing it last time. He said it was a new ride. I was like, what does it do? He said it was a roller coaster. And right at that point all the feelings started to kick in: the anxiety, the excitement, the fear, and all these other emotions that made it difficult to walk and talk. And then to finally ride it and have it shatter all your expectations. That's what this ride means to me. Back then I would have given it an infinite number out of 10. Now I give it a 9.
    But someone who goes to CP for the first time this year, or someone who is 25 and has been on coasters all over the country or even the midwest won't think this is all that special and I can totally understand their point of view when they give it a 6.
    I also think that because I have been going to CP for so long that maybe I am used to the "roughness" of the older rides. because I still feel that Magnum is smooth, and the lap bars have never bothered me. This year I took my dad to CP for father's day. He hadn't been in like 20 years and he didn't like the B & M's all that much. He did love MF and Maverick. So we went on those countess times and we went on Magnum 10 times, Gemini 8 times, and Mean Streak 6 or 7 times.

    Never understood the hate for this ride. Rode it twice in a row after a rough rain on 7/19 and didn't find it too rough. And got some good ejector on the hills in the second half. For 1989, it's pretty insane. This came 2 days after a King's Island visit. As much as I love The Beast, I can never understand how someone could fault this coaster for being rough but call that ride smooth.

    This is a magnificent coaster, worthy of the ACE plaque at the entrance. My daughter and I had a lot of laps on Magnum this year, usually in row 17. Magnum is a must ride every time we set foot in the park. In 2019, it was the only coaster we rode every visit. My daughter ranks Magnum SOLIDLY in her top three. We only have weekend day trips to work with for our coaster trips, but we still strapped into 57 different coasters (so far) in 2019. Magnum is pretty high on my list too. The view, the wonderful sound of an Arrow lift hill, the second hill after the first tunnel, left seat going thru the pretzel, the occasional drastic temperature difference inside the first tunnel after the pretzel. There’s many little things I’ve come to love about Magnum in 30 years that just make it special.

  • @williammahony9347
    @williammahony9347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is the opposite of what you would normally do on a coaster, but the trick tor receiving a pain free ride on Magum is to tighten the seat belt as much as possible, seriously... tighten the crap out of it. This prevents you from slamming into the lap bar so violently and makes a ride that I previously didn't care for a pretty great experience.

    My daughter and I got 7 rides on Magnum in under an hour today. Yes, it is more rough than a modern steel.....but Magnum was hand welded and fabricated on site. The restraints are admittedly terrible and the ejector moments can be painful. Don’t get stapled and don’t ride a wheel seat. I love a loose bar on this ride. I have been riding this coaster for many years and I have developed a fondness to it quirks. My daughter (age 10) has been riding it with me for four years now and also enjoys it. She was excited about it being a walk on today. I know Magnum has its detractors, but it’s a ACE landmark for a reason. I don’t mind the roughness, but I do wish that Cedar Point could retrofit more modern restraints. Ride on. 👍

    Had my first trip to Cedar Point last weekend and this ride completely blew away my expectations. The ejector pops at the end were incredible, and having grown up riding the Beast it's hard to be bothered by a little roughness. I honestly would call it my #3 at the park after SV and Millennium. We did unintentionally get a night ride on it, though, and I snagged the magic car 1, row 3 seat, so these might be factors.

    I know at the end of this video you mention that you took in to account the age of the ride but honestly it really comes off on your reviews of older non-computer designed rides that you don't give them the credit they deserve for the era they were built in. You seriously need to take a giant step back and think about it! You CANNOT give an honest review of rides that were built about 10 years before you were even born and try to compare them to ones made just a few years ago. Like trying to compare a top of the line car from 1980 to a bottom of the line car built in 2010. There is simply no way to even begin to compare the 2 fairly. The 2010 car even though it is the WORST EVER for 2010 is still WAY BETTER than one built in 1980.
    This coaster deserves a 10 for most of the categories you are rating if it was simply based on others built at or around the same time. To compare it to a modern coaster in any way is a faulty review.

    Magnum has the best drop because of how slow you go over the top. On millenium you only feel the drop if you are in the front. Dragster you don't feel a drop at all because you basically just fly over the top and it has the twist.

    When I rode this ride, sure it was a little rough, but I was filled with way too much excitement and adrenaline to even think about that. Come to think of it, Magnum was my very first hyper coaster ever. So what I'm saying is, despite the roughness, I really enjoyed it. What a heck of a ride.

    I LOVE this ride!!!! If you want a great ride, then lightly tighten the lap bar as possible. All the pain goes away on the airtime hills. It might be a bumpy ride, but that gives the ride its character. It seems like it has a lot more personality then newer coasters. Also, I got airtime on every hill but the second hill. Magnum XL-200 has some of the BEST airtime I've ever gotten on a roller coaster. On B&M Hypers, I don't really feel like I'm coming up out of my seat, but on Magnum, I go FLYING.

    Frankly whenever I finally get to Cedar Point (not easy living in Italy) I'd probably ride this first for its heritage, and the zero queue time, then MF right after to see how far coasters evolved in just 10 years.
    To "fix" Magnum XL 200's roughness and make it as exciting as it was the day it opened, I'd fit new, custom tailored smooth-as-a-supermodel's-ass floorless trains (probably by B&M) which instead of lame shoulder restraints would have soft, cushioned Y belts with computer controlled "give" in the mechanism for airtime thrills. Lure riders in by mounting a Ferrari 308 on a Magnum XL 200 plinth on Midway, and give the queue and station a complete "80s nostalgia" makeover, with Magnum P.I props, 80s hits (have music on the long as Hell lift hill and long post-brake run too) and lots of neon lighting.
    And 80s hair for the ride attendants

    I've been following the channel for several months now, and enjoy your reviews. Keep up the fine work you're doing and I look forward to the almost always daily video at Coaster Studios.You touched on it's age in the video, and I classify Magnum more as a classic ride. I first rode this in '93 and was digging a re-ride when I returned to CP this past summer. It's as fun as I remembered, and I didn't notice that much of difference in the bumpiness department. Then again, it was 22 years between rides. FWIW, It's sort of funny for me to see that many of the coasters I loved as a teen are criticized for being rough today. To be fair, when compared to newer coasters, Magnum is pretty rough!

    Also the key to Magnum is keep the belt tight but bar loose. Ya feel the air but with less knee smashing. Now I like a rough ride, I wont lie sometimes I do like to let myself fly. Yeah you are flying into the restraints and it hurts a bit but what can I say I like it.

    The reason people like magnum is cuz it doesn’t give you a headache and it’s fun to try different rows on and the airtime is crazy

    It's a fair review. This ride became optional in 2000 when they built Millennium. The slow lift hill is part of its charm, but the rough airtime is not.

  • @Pikabutter25
    @Pikabutter25 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I went in May (on a weekday, before school got out, and when it was cloudy) I only waited for the duration of 1 dispatch. It could have been a walk on if i settled on middle-back rows. Overall, Magnum was my first hyper coaster, was good in 2010, and just deteriorated over the last 5 years.

    Although it often gets shaky after the first two hills, this ride always has a short line, and is consistently fun. One of the best night rides at CP too after Valravn and Millennium, because of the tunnels. I definitely like this coaster quite a bit.

      Last car 1st or 2nd row. If you can handle the roughness the first car third row provides amazing ejector airtime.

    +coaster studios you have to ride magnum xl200 with the lap bar about 1-2 clicks off that way its not too tight and you feel the airtime hills the most plus its not painfull

  • @SchrodingersCat8813
    @SchrodingersCat8813 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like it. 7/10. It is rough, though tolerable in my book guess it all depends on the personal threshold. It does have intense airtime, the restraints do suck. It's a one time per visit ride for me but I like it. I try my best to keep space with the harness

    correction: Moonsault Scramble was the first hyper coaster. 229ft approximately

    • @themeparkthrills5961
      @themeparkthrills5961 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Moonsault scramble was a shuttle coaster, not a full circuit and the definition of "hyper coaster" says it must be a full circuit. It's the same thing as superman at magic mountain and TTD. Superman was the first coaster over 400 ft and opened before TTD, but was not the first strata coaster, TTD was.

    Now that I have finally visited Cedar Point, I do agree that the lap bars make the airtime more uncomfortable because it really hurt my legs when they kept getting bumped into the lap bars. The smoothest isn’t too great either, but the main issue is that it is painful with how my legs always seem to hit the restraints. I am skinny btw.

  • @riang.4067
    @riang.4067 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Taylor, thank you for your reviews, notably of Magnum at Cedar Point. I wondered if anyone else had complained at how rough of a ride it is. Nearly to the point of getting hurt! One would hope Cedar Point would rehab it, at least as far as the restraints go.

  • @beebee1794
    @beebee1794 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im gonna love Magnum from afar from now on. It wasn't super rough until the second half where I got brusies from the restraints and the bunny hills. Sooooo painful, it was cool at first but 1/4 of the way through the bunny hills I was cringing and trying to figure out ways to stop the pain, it sucked but I least I got the credit lol

  • @mr.noride7226
    @mr.noride7226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have given Magnum XL 200 a 4 to be honest. It wasn’t the worst coaster I have been on, but it did hurt my legs pretty bad so I rank it just below average. I wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as it was because I had heard so many great things about it. Out of all of the roller coasters at Cedar Point, this and Gatekeeper were the biggest let downs. I mention Gatekeeper because I was expecting to have a super good ride, but it just wasn’t as intense as I thought. It was still fun, but didn’t bring the intensity I wanted which I realize is a problem with a lot of wing coasters. Out of the 12 roller coasters I rode at Cedar Point Magnum ranked towards the bottom for me. Steel Vengeance, Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster and Maverick were incredible. The only problem with Maverick is it is harder to re ride it because it hurts my neck after awhile, but it is still a great ride.

    This coaster is one of my favorites because new Hyper coasters don't have ejector air time, they have bad floaters. Now there are quite a few amazing new Hypers out there, but the small hills are amazing because your not locked under a tight lap bar. also this ride gives a great different experience, I like shaky and kind of bumpy coasters like this because it changes the ride in a great way. smooth coasters are good for inversions and steep drops and other "fancy" elements. older coasters is all about the air time. This coasters gives the air time.

    When it was built it was great, but that was 1989, this coaster was all bent by hand, no computers which is why it’s rough, now we are in 2020. 31 years, of course it’s going to get rough. It was the first coaster to go over 200 ft. Yes the lap bars suck but that is what Arrow used unless it went upside down, in that case it got OTSR. Arrow isn’t know for their smoothness.

    Magnum is almost always broken down... when i was in line for it last season I was talking to one of the operators and he said it has broken down 4 times that day for at least 45 minutes. It was only like 3 pm though. So i stayed in line hoping it would be fixed and after about 30 minutes they made everyone leave the line so they could shut it down for the rest of the day.

    Magnum is inconsistant, i went to cedar point 10 times and counting. if you were in a full train on a busy day, than your experiance is more painful. If there is no one in line and your the only person on the train, you actually get airtime and it is painless

    You need to know how to work the lap bars. Always leave it a click up and hold it up with you legs. If you follow these steps, that return trip is the best on any coaster.

    Me and my cousin rode it on our first trip to Cedar Point on Tuesday 7/17/18. We did not like it at all, it was shaky, rough, and painful. Thankfully, we knew to skip it entirely on our second day, Wednesday the 18th. But yea, Magnum was a complete dud for us. We both gave it a 1 out of 10.

  • @adamcook7680
    @adamcook7680 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    piece of advice, slouch a bit and the lap bar doesn't rest on your thighs. Much less painful. Also the first airtime hill inst meant to have airtime, (although front row as a ridiculous pop) its meant to be tall and give a chance to take in the view. It does get some decent lines with only two trains(hour, hour and a half) but with three trains it has the highest capacity in the park.

  • @MaxAndSarahVlogs

    Definitely think it's overrated, but still like it. It can be pretty brutal, though. One year, I got an unusually smooth night ride, one of the last rides of the night, and there were no trims. Definitely the best ride experience I've had on magnum.

    Couldn't they get B&M to retrofit the ride with new cars? It worked for Steel Dragon 2000, it could work here. That would not only take care of the bumpiness, but also give the ride a more open feel.

Heck, the Golden Ticket awards (corrupted and unreliable as they are) had Magnum XL 200 in the top 10 steel coasters in 2013. It was good to see a genuine review of this coaster. Great Video as always.
