Dev Patel saw that Hollywood wasn’t giving him the action roles he deserved so he said fuck it I’ll do it myself and turned into fucking John wick . Hell yeah!!
Dev Patel hasn't gotten to use that blackbelt since that awful movie that shall not be named. So he decided he'd give himself a reason.

Jordan Peele wasn’t an actual producer on the film when it was being made. This was completed back in 2021 and Netflix was just sitting on it for a while. Jordan Peele got to see it and decided it deserved a theatrical release so he bought it from Netflix. He went back and helped with making some editing changes and that’s why he’s got a producer credit.
True he wasn't an initial producer. He probably got producing credit because his production company "Monkeypaw" helped buy it, not editing. He didn't fund the production but him buying it for theatrical I'm sure helped Dev a lot because this would have just been lost in the sea of nonsense Netflix films that no one gives much attention to. It still means Jordan believed in the project when even Netflix was just going to throw it on streaming.

This trailer was edited insanely well. Cinematography, colour grading, fight choreography, story telling, the music cutting, great work.
You probably work in production/visual media. I do and yes this trailer is done insanely well. I want to know how much was the director’s input in it, who is the editor. Each shot is cut on a beat, the pauses are spot on. It’s one of the best trailers I saw in a long time. Told us the premise but not the story and captured the mood.

the moneky they keep referring to is hanuman, the hindu god, for reference, the famous monkey king of chinese mythology is inspired by hanuman, hanuman is the original...and the voice in the background saying "it's time to remember who you are" is a direct reference to the hindu epic ramayan where a great scholar jambavanth help hanuman the monkey god realise who he really is before hanuman goes and sets fear in the said demon king and his army
Jambavan reminds Hanuman of his power when he's afraid to make the jump from Tip of India to Lanka, when he's reminded of his powers and how he jumped to get a piece of the Sun and recovered, he then makes the jump, goes to Lanka to see where Sita ma is, negotiates with Ravana and upon death threats he burns down the entire city

I like projects like this where you know they put their heart and soul in it, it's not just Hollywood pumping out the same slop. I'm going to watch this if only because Dev wrote and directed it. The fact that Hollywood didn't want to cast him in these roles because he doesn't fit the stereotypical action star and he decided to just do it himself. He's got my ticket

Monkey Man here refers to a Hindu god called HANUMAN who went to war for his master RAM. The recently released Telugu (one of the many languages in INDIA) movie in the name of "Hanu-man" delves into some of the lore related to HANUMAN. Its said that he is one of the immortals in the HINDU etymology and is still meditating/praying in the Himalayas for his masters return.
Hanuman was more of believer,devotee of Lord Ram . technically master is someone who teach someone something and hanuman didnt learn any sort of fighting techniques from lord rama! He was loyal and deepest follower of lord rama
Actually Hanuman was a devotee of Lord Ram not his student at all, lord ram actually believed Hanuman to be greater than him and infact Lord Hanuman is superior in many terms but lord Ram isn't just a Lord he is an example and an inspiration for what he stands for

I randomly had this trailer as an ad and I felt like something was cooking in the first few seconds so I gave it a minute and I ended up watching the whole 3+ minute ad, this has absolutely no right coming out of nowhere and looking this hard.
Dev Patel is trained in Taekwando and it shows. The trailer reminds me of the raid, ong bak, john wick.... it promises to be special.

'Sun Wukong' aka The Monkey king is actually inspired/copied from the Hindu religion god 'Hanuman'. Hanuman is a monkey God. Even the Goku character in Dragon ball is also inspired by Hanuman. The White monkey tale they narrate at beginning is actually the story of Hanuman. I don't know why they call him white monkey instead of Hanuman in the trailer, may be it's just in the trailer or because of religious reasons.
Maybe a language thing, or just editing where in the movie he says "Hanuman, the white monkey."

I saw this movie tonight with a mate and by the end we were both in awe, it was by far the best movie I’ve seen in years.
The buildup into the movie was well paced that added backstory and context to every detail we missed in the beginning, half way through the movie it went real deep and built up into the ending with VERY satisfying moments up to the end.

@@emergencyfood7660 yep I've read the articles as well, he saw the completed movie and decided it should have a theatrical release... but that's it, he had no control over the how the movie was made. People see his name in the trailer and think he teamed up with Dev or they speculate on how this movie came to be and unfortunately it's nothing like that. However I also get that he's a bit of a name so that also give's the movie more cred. Personally I'm psyched to see what Dev has created since this is clearly his vision as writer, producer, director and ass kickerer, can't wait

The whole Monkey King mythology is really "Asian" mythology and India is in Asia. So whether it's Wukong, Hanuman or something else, they're really derived from the same story with different interpretations. Of course religion dictates that we argue over who's fictional god is better than the other but we're all just borrowing from each other at this point.

This trailer was 10/10. The movie itself was maybe a 7.5 out of 10. The direction and action were both pretty strong, but the execution was janky.
SPOILERS
The bit in the middle where he spends 30 minutes getting wisdom from a community of mostly trans sages and took drugs was both incredibly weird and really broke the film's momentum. While I recognize this is a deliberate commentary on circumstances actually going on in modern-day India, that doesn't excuse the tonal shift and pacing issues these sequences introduce.
Also, he kind of made friends with a horrible thug dirt-bag who is a longstanding employee of a violent brothel, and then that plot thread was more or less completely dropped (and it felt like it had so many bits missing, I wasn't even sure if they were really friends or if it was part of his act).
END SPOILERS
So, the result is a film that had some truly amazing stuff. It demonstrates Dev has both true action chops AND directing chops. BUT, it didn't quite come together as well as I was hoping it would, which is a shame. Can't wait to see Dev do more of this, however, he'll only get better at it, if he sticks with it.
Its basically a Batman set up in India.
