When I first heard JK Simmons as Ketheric Thorm, I felt like the acting was very 1 note. But now having played a huge chunk of the game, I couldn’t imagine that character sounding any different. It just works. He’s so cold.
@@therealfriendshipmanlots of people say he sounds flat but thats exactly what I found so menacing about him. His introduction was chilling. My group was like we aren't fucking with him yet lmao That scene served its purpose which was acting as a hint from the DM that we needed more help before we dealt with him.
Astarion was definitely my favorite companion during my first playthrough - and much of it has to do with how Neil has done a fantastic job with the VA. Every "darling" was a giggle 😅
There are moments, especially in Act 3, where you can choose to say nothing and let Astarion speak for himself and they are beautifully written and acted and can really serve to show the strength of the relationships built through choices made.
This is so true! I played through a few of those dialogue moments the other day, and it's not often that the 'say nothing' dialogue option feels like the right one to pick. But I often thought it was often the perfect choice, whether it was to let the importance of their words/actions linger in silence, or to let their dialogue shine without interruption ^^ Amazing work to everyone involved in the creative process here!
Oh definitely... especially in the final confrontation with Cazador, that should really be Astarion's scene with no-one else butting in. Same with Astarion talking to the old Gur lady... having Tav push themselves into that conversation and thus taking control away from Astarion would've felt wrong. I'll have his back, but it's not my place to cut him off.
Hearing the man speak casually I really respect the work put into the character. Voice is the same but Astarion has different manerisms and melody to the way he speaks, what a great job. And he hoped for a goblin role!
Neil is so damn good at his job, seriously. Been a long time fan, but his work on Astarion is something else. I laughed until I cried when I got a cutscene where I accidentally killed him and had to resurrect him and he *very dramatically* yelled at me for using "the full concentrated power of the sun" on him. Also, his Twitch streams are a riot, I always end up smiling so hard my face hurts (specially his XCom 2 streams. . .he uses his subscribers as his recruits and we end up as cannon fodder. Somehow I'm still alive, knock on wood.)
I think Neil/as Starry, is worth seeing in a Actualized DND Lore Series on Starry's whole Story. Because the Character is just too loved Like what happened before Casabore got him, How he got his name? What was his eye color before they turned red. How he was before Vamped, Did he have any Sweet hearts, or one? Was he a Magestrate or was he more Rogue, he got mad skills from somewhere. Was he sold out to Cazador? By a enemy he had¿? So much material. No lore book's yet tho, sadly. 💀🗡️🗡️✨🧝🏻♀️✨❤️🩹 ✨🌜🎭🛡️❤️🩹⚔️💀✨ Thank you @Gammingmadness

I remember once my brother and I listening to David Tennant reading poetry lol Like it's a video game but it's also the most beautiful TV show based on a book where they every single detail and plot point accurately to the point that the book fans will get a little too excited.
This guy...this guy was so giga omega freaking good, like every voice actor on BG 3 did phenomenal job, but Astarion was outstanding still. 10/10 my man

All of their characters are so fantastically written and acted and yes, Astarion is my favorite. He's going to be in every single party I make. 2 Rogues? I dont care. He's still gonna be in it. Sassy, funny and damaged. Precious cinnamon roll that needs protected at all costs.

It’s hilarious that I was definitely *not* on the Astarion bandwagon until I played through the game on release (I played in EA). In fact, I kind of hated the character all through EA, but he really grew on me and I came to like him. This was very much a testament to how well-written and acted the character was. A brilliant job by the writers and by Newbon!
To be fair, creepy clows _are_ horrifying, and that clown in Act 3 was evil, so yeah, 100% with Astarion on that "As if clowns weren't enough of a horror already." statement.
been playing the game for about a week straight now. Its absolutely the best game out there right now, and to be honest for me the best RPG ive played other than ME2 and the Witcher 3. Great job with Acting and everything
I love that he is also making character playlists, it is the easiest way for me to slip into a character's mindset. I always consider 3 things while making such a playlist: what songs would they listen to? What songs would fit their story? And what songs fit their personality? It makes it so much easier to go into the headspace of a character.
I know nothing about dungeons and dragons… I’ve never played balders gate before.. I downloaded the game FOR astarion- and the game is absolutely amazing ❤❤❤
Great interview, thank you very much! I loved Astarion in Baldurs Gate 3, a great character with an interesting background and above all with the best voice acting in the entire game. Neil gives us an amazing performance, no one could have done it better, I really would love to see him as Astarion anytime soon.
I LOVE Astarion so so much! Neil Newbon did an amazing job of voice acting for him. The character is incredibly charismatic. I hope we get DLCs and game sequels with this character and that Neil will always be his voice. I really wish this actor to reach all possible heights and receive all possible awards for his acting skills, because anyone who played BG3 can say that he gave it his all. Thanks for this interview!
Thank you for this interview! Neil is so magnificent, I can not imagine Astarion with another voice line! Now Astarion is my favorite character not even in BG3 but in all the videogames!
When I started playing early access, I was honestly annoyed by the mannerisms of Astarian. But after three years of playing, I fell in love with this voice. He has so many shades, so much work. More than all other characters. And after the release, I'm just delighted, the scene with Cazador was simply unforgettable in terms of voice acting. The strongest moment in the game in my opinion. Neil is very talented.
I’m enjoying these BG3 Companion Voice Actor interviews. That said, I think it would only be complete when you’ve done an interview for all the primary player companions. That should be a goal and it would be awesome to get the main cast all interviewed.
Oh absolutely. I have interviews Lae'zel voice actor as well , if you want you can check that out. I would love to get more main companions in the podcast.

The love he has for the character really comes through in this interview too and is fun to see. Also I appreciate the good questions and banter from Abhi here as well. Wonderful stuff. Will be watching the other interviews with the voice talent for this game.
Oh thank you so much for saying those kind words. Neil just put all of soul into this character and you can clearly see how much he loves this character
So great to hear about the whole BG3 process! Must have been a blast. I hope you're interviewing the other main cast members, and the Narrator too! (Amelia Tyler)

Watching this interview after playing BG3 for the past month. Really enjoying it. Discovered the stuffed bear scene where Astarion goes "Rawr!" Did not know I needed that in my life. Love you Neil! 😂
Look. Astarion is not my 'type' at all. AT ALL. But I still could not help but romance him in my first playthrough (and possibly my upcoming Durge one as well) because I saw some clips of him on TH-cam, and promptly fell in love with the performance. Bravo, Neil Newbon. You absolutely sold Astarion to me, and undoubtably many, many others.
These interview are cool man! Astarion annoyed the sh*t out of me, until did a full evil Dark Urge Drow cleric of Lolth playthrough of act I. His enjoyment of your horrendous evil was just hilarious.
I have a filling that Niel enjoying his work very much. That's cool. Love his voice. I'm glad that I've stumbled upon this interview. Question for Niel if he sees that: have you ever been told that Astarion sounds very like Tim Curry's character from Rocky Horror Picture show?)
All astarion fangirls showing up here shows how great his work as an actor is hahah, wonderful! It made me so happy to hear he had so much fun to work with the creators!
I finished the game as redemption dark urge and fell in love with Astarion's character and story arc. Now I play as him because I wanted to experience the story with his eyes. It is so good! Also, many many people find Neil Newbon so attractive, not just Astarion (I have at least 8 friends finds him hot as hell). I think he knows that too but he is quite shy about it :)
As a VtM enjoyer, Astarion is my FAVOURITE kind of vampire, Neil did such an amazing job. The character growth, the emotion, the DEPTH. Love it so so so so much.
I want to know how he acted out the stabbing Cazador scene. The passion and pain of that whole Act III of The Pale Elf quest was… honestly as a child who was abused and neglected … triggering-but in a-cathartic way Seeing an experience so akin to mine, but warped and stretched for the mythopoetic setting, and rooting for and aiding that character was incredible.
I am unreasonably terrified of clowns. I didn't want to go on stage either and I went into the fair with just me and Astarion like a character date. No matter who I picked it was gonna end badly and with resentment.
My husband and I started in Multiplayer. We each got one companion. I chose Stari. After the whole bite scene, the next morning my husband activated the next scene and told him to never bite anyone. Then after the party the PS5 thought I was rapidly pressing X and screwed up my dialogue options with him and we'd not saved for a while so he wasn't willing to go back to the last load. Then each time a scene could happen that you need Stari in for his story, he was the one who got it and he had Shadowheart. I was fully locked out of the romance option. So, in the spirit of fairness, I had to steal some of his Shadowheart moments. LMFAO. I love DND.
I actually started my playthrough of BG3 not liking Astarion at all. I thought he was hyper sexualised, annoying and very full of himself. But well....I still invited him to my camp - you can always use a rouge, right? Slowly as I played and learned more of his story and character... my opinions changed. I learned some of what he has been though and that horrified me. I never romanced him but we had some great talks and I helped him kill his abusive former master and be free. Slowly I understood why he is as he is and appreciate it. Now we are best buddies and he calls me 'friend' and 'his favorite travelling companion'. All this just goes to show some great writing and great acting can even sway how you initially feel about a character and show there there is more to learn about them. Also we share the same feelings about clowns and I let Karlach take one for the team on that stage. Thanks to Neil Newbon (and the writers of course) for creating a great character
Yaaa it's crazy right to see how we have these initial impressions of these characters whether good or bad but as we spend time with them , we get to know more about them. The more we know , the more we start to like them
Would be cool to see the voice actors for the companions dressed as their characters sitting around a table in a tavern in the background of the next movie.
i really want to know what weird inspirations he had for astarion's voice. im shocked the interviewer didnt think to ask that while neil was going on about it
Nobody says "DARLING" better than this guy!!!
I absolutely agree
Tom Ellis is pretty great too :P
And Tim Curry of course
What about the Eddie Gluskin from Outlast Whistleblower?
Having Astarion appear in a D&D movie, especially if it's the sequel to Honour Among Thieves, would be amazing.
It would absolutely be!!
Oh my gosh yes!! That would be fantastic!
And he would steal the entire show and the the shows of all the other movies playing at the cinema at the same time.
I fell in love with Astarion faster than the Nautiloid crashed 😂

Yaa I was thinking the same and maybe they will end up doing it at some point
@GaminMadness they already did the first episode us out and it's hilarious
I stopped gaming for 2 years cause I didn't feel it anymore. BG3 brought back my love for lore video games and I enjoy it a lot ❤
WOW that's beautiful. I'm glad that this game brought you back
@@BehindTheVoicePodit surely did and keeps hold of me 😅
It’s the best game I’ve ever played. Best of the game is the characters, they are what make it compelling.
Yaa all the characters are so believable
These interview are cool man! Astarion annoyed the sh*t out of me, until did a full evil Dark Urge Drow cleric of Lolth playthrough of act I. His enjoyment of your horrendous evil was just hilarious.
Thank you so much for watching. His laugh is amazing
I have a filling that Niel enjoying his work very much. That's cool. Love his voice. I'm glad that I've stumbled upon this interview.
Question for Niel if he sees that: have you ever been told that Astarion sounds very like Tim Curry's character from Rocky Horror Picture show?)
Thank you so much for watching this!
All astarion fangirls showing up here shows how great his work as an actor is hahah, wonderful! It made me so happy to hear he had so much fun to work with the creators!
I am glad that you enjoyed this character as well
I finished the game as redemption dark urge and fell in love with Astarion's character and story arc. Now I play as him because I wanted to experience the story with his eyes. It is so good! Also, many many people find Neil Newbon so attractive, not just Astarion (I have at least 8 friends finds him hot as hell). I think he knows that too but he is quite shy about it :)
Yeaa right!
awesome interview thx !!!!
Thank you for watching!
brilliant interview
Thank you so much for watching!!
If Neil likes "space cowboys", I hope he has seen the TV show _Firefly?_
I think so
He’s so talented.
He truly is
As a VtM enjoyer, Astarion is my FAVOURITE kind of vampire, Neil did such an amazing job. The character growth, the emotion, the DEPTH. Love it so so so so much.
Yaa me too.
Great interview! Thanks you for your work
Thank you for watching!
🧛 he even has Astarions fangs 🦷 🙂
Ikr! It's crazy
I want to know how he acted out the stabbing Cazador scene. The passion and pain of that whole Act III of The Pale Elf quest was… honestly as a child who was abused and neglected … triggering-but in a-cathartic way
Seeing an experience so akin to mine, but warped and stretched for the mythopoetic setting, and rooting for and aiding that character was incredible.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I think it shows how incredible of an actor Neil is
@@BehindTheVoicePod amazing. To turn a bunch of pixels that cannot exist in our world into a living breathing person takes real talent
Phenomenal voice actor!
He absolutely is
DAH-LING~ I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER AHHSK~
Neil you were stupendous mate 👍
I am unreasonably terrified of clowns. I didn't want to go on stage either and I went into the fair with just me and Astarion like a character date. No matter who I picked it was gonna end badly and with resentment.
Yaa clowns are terrifying
LMFAO. I love DND.
WOW that's hilarious!
I think you can especially hear the similarities between Heisenberg and Astarion with "shutyourfuckinghole" and "imgoingtofuckingkillyou"
Right?
It is similar in some ways because of that texture of his voice
The more we know , the more we start to like them
CAMEO IN DND MOVIE OMG
Would be cool to see the voice actors for the companions dressed as their characters sitting around a table in a tavern in the background of the next movie.
Neil should have been in the D&D movie
I absolutely agree
i really want to know what weird inspirations he had for astarion's voice. im shocked the interviewer didnt think to ask that while neil was going on about it
Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time to talk to him but if I ever get another opportunity , I would love to talk to him again
Can't wait for the Xbox glitch to be fixed so they can release on that platform. Astarion is already a must for my party, he's a sassy git
Oh for sure! They did release a ton of fixes on PC and so I'm hoping they fix some more on Xbox as well
@@BehindTheVoicePod the voice acting on all the characters is stellar, I'm really looking forward to this after waiting so long since shadows of amn
this is one of your best interviews but i want one with the narrator (i hope i am not sounding rude but this is the best sentence i can find)
Ya no worries , you are not sounding rude. I would say , stay subscribed and you might see something next week
Space Cowboys = Firefly the Game
