  • An ancient cave settlement that feels like something straight out of a movie & makes you forget what country you are in? Sign us up! In this episode, we are exploring one of Italy's hidden gems, Grotta Mangiapane (Scurati Caves) in Custonaci, Sicily! An ancient cave settlement in the province of Trapani and unlike anything we have come across in Italy! It includes a small village of houses that were inhabited from 1819 until the mid-1900s. Today, everything in the village is exactly as it was a century ago.

    Guys, I'm pretty sure that's where they do the "presepe vivente" ("living nativity scene" in English maybe?) every year around Christmas. They fill that place with actors, many little Rosalias in flesh and blood, in every room, acting like they were doing their stuff, in their costumes. And that big cave is where the actual nativity scene takes place (you can still see those hay benches where Maria and Giuseppe would seat). That's why this place looks like a movie set! :) You should check if they'll still do it despite covid, and in that case *definitely* go back there around Christmas time!

    Rosalia needs her own hashtag...like #whathappenedtorosalia or something

    • @TheGlobalExpats
      @TheGlobalExpats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hahaha ok ok since we have finished filming in Sicily, we will have to reintroduce Rosalia after we find out what happened to her because at some stage of her life she obviously visited the north on her epic adventure! I will continue my research for now 😂 so begins the #whathappenedtorosalia saga!

    that thing at 6:20 is an olive press for extracting olive oil. The olives are placed on the circular mats seen squished together in your video, in layers: circular fiber mat disc with a layer of olives on top, then another mat disc with more olives on top, then another mat, etc. etc. all stacked on top of one another. Finally, the screw is turned and the mats press the olives and the oil pours out of the olives through the fibrous mats and down sides of the mats -- literally pours out -- and collects in the trough at the floor. Collect in barrels or bottles. Awesome to watch. The leftover "meat" of the olives is used as feed for the animals or fertilizer for the garden. Nothing wasted.

    Great videos guys ✨...that brings back memories! I was there on September 30 to do a photoshoot with a model. I chose that location, because I also think it's like a movie set - it's amazing! After my 3 months in Sicily I had to go back to cloudy and cold Germany and I already miss Sicily so much... the sea, the food, gelato and granita con brioche, cannoli... and all the beautiful places. ☀️☀️☀️
    Hope you guys are doing great in north Italy and I'm looking forward to watching your videos from the opposite side of Italy

    Thank you so much for taking us with you on this journey! If we could wrap you both in hugs and love we would! This place reminds me so much of the second to the last book in Jean M. Auel's Earth Children's series, Shelter of Stone... The entire society had their town built into the caves and the way this looks kinda makes the book come alive!!!!!!

    We just visited this wonderful place and we loved it. All this thanks to you. There is now a small snack bar [ called 'A' Rutta ] where you can eat typical delicious sicilian food. I enjoyed watching your video once again this time together with the owners of the snack bar. This place is very well kept not to mention the scenery around it which is breathtaking. Love your drone footage btw.

    Awesome place: I'm Italian and I had never heard of that before! And you're right, it does not feel like you're in Italy: it calls to mind more a Native pueblo in Arizona than an Italian village!

    Awesome video! It's surreal to have a setting like that within sight of the Sicilian beaches! One little thing though: this video was pretty choppy on our TV, probably because it's 24 fps instead of your usual 30 fps. Did you switch to 24 when you filmed (due to lower light conditions in the cave area) or did you film at 30 and then [accidentally?] convert to 24 fps in post?

    • @TheGlobalExpats
      @TheGlobalExpats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's crazy right, it looks nothing like its surroundings! 😅 I noticed something strange as well when watching it on a tv, only the driving scenes are in 24fps but the rest is in 30fps. It seems to play alright on the computer and phone but you might be right, we forgot (accidentally) to switch back to 30fps for a few clips. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, I will keep an eye on it 🙌🏽

    Incredible how people still want to live like that. I see the rationality behind it, although I could never adjust to life without the internet. I would love to live with all those animals around me though...not for animal husbandry though, just for neighbors!
