Top Hat Gaming Man Can you do a video on the Konami Picno? Previously you did a video on a unreleased Konami game system so it might be interesting to see one they actually made.

The first time I heard about the Pippin was the Lucky Star Anime. It was Konata's reward for getting into a lower ranked class.

I'm surprised that the Pippin was even mentioned in an anime at all, considering how few Pippins were sold in comparison to PSXes. Had Apple and Bandai either released the console a couple of years earlier or waited a couple of years, the Pippin might've had a chance.
Also, I'm surprised that Konata didn't mention Windows Vista, although it's clear that she uses Windows XP.

It wasn't just Europe's schools being Mac dominated. In southern Oregon every class computer in every school I went to, until about 2002 was a Mac. Most computer labs were packed with Apple IIs and Macs as well. This was largely the story for most of the US too. While IBM was dominating the home and business markets, Apple ruled the educational market in the 90s. Neat to see that, at least in the UK, it was kind of the same story too.

Apple? Open standards? Now that is two things I would never have thought could go together! This console seems like it failed for a lack of software support and, more importantly, a lack of customer awareness. Pretty much no-one heard of it until long after the Pippin had been discontinued.

    • @ZILtoid1991
      @ZILtoid1991 5 ปีที่แล้ว

They have some on the software front. I actually considered LZFSE as an option for my game engine's data compression format, but decided to go with Facebook's Z-Standard, partly because the more widespread use of the latter, partly because Apple decided to throw out OpenGL and similar technologies from MacOSX my engine depends on.

I bought one a few years back since I heard it could play burn ios games on cds... I only got 1 game to work one time, so I went to search original games to buy and they were more expensive than the pippin console itself... So I sold it lol

Not bad, but you didn't get the history of Bandai right. It was Makoto Yamashina, the son of founder Naoharu, who made the risky technology bets on Playdia and Pippin (the wrong person is pictured in your video).

Great idea, poorly implemented. Check out my list of System 7 games that could have ran well on the Pippin below.
    - Great CPU
    - Great stripped down OS system 7.5.5
    - More capable than a Sega Saturn and PSX
    Detractors to the console:
    - Terrible marketing, packaging, name and logo.
    - It didn't leverage the powerful image and brand recognition of Apple.
    - It couldn't distinguish itself from other similar multimedia solutions on the market like the 3DO, CD32 and generically marketed CDi.
    - It couldn't clearly define its strengths over other consoles and consciously didn't focus on the critical gaming market. Instead it tried a similar failed approach to Philips with the multimedia boom and intentionally offered a generic under powered multimedia hub as a 'catch-all' solution.
    - Bandai had a poor overall strategy for marketing with no clear focus on console gaming. Bandai tried to offer a lifestyle machine for the new interactive home. Music, video, interactive edutainment, the Internet etc were also new territory that the Pippin tried to offer to the family communal living space without any sufficient demand for it in a console.
    - It offered too much and confused the general consumer.
    - Bandai priced itself out of the market immediately with the Pippins initial release.
    - It had a great potential library of games that it could play straight from the Macintosh home computer library but neither bundled nor advertised this to consumers.
    - From a design point of view it had an array of physical multimedia buttons located on the unit that could have been reassigned to the controller and operated through software. It also sported a joypad that couldn't compete with its rivals.

I remember it at the time. Part of the issues I think was the fact that many people didn't understand what it was supposed to do. Apple had their clever marketing people and their clever ads that were so clever they never explained the purpose of the device. Reviewers made the same comments, it's supposed to do a bit of everything but not clear what its main purpose was. Kids drove the video game market and so adult oriented ads were also off target.

But imagine if this console did succeed tho. I would have been a high class console for mature people, something Sony was doing with the playstation, and It would have looked way more powerful than the Nintendo 64, and playstation if the developers knew how to make games for it and pushed it to its fullest potential.

A quick and dirty way to convert Yen is just to drop a dot before the last to digits.
Japan has long tried to keep ¥100 = $1 US.
A $650 game console in the late '90s? That's fail.

I suspect the reason it failed (and the 3DO, and other early MM consoles at the time), was that it was freaking expensive. Not as much as a PC or Mac, but once it hits it's limit, it's a paperweight, while PCs and Macs can be upgraded over time. The strange thing is, you can find them on eBay new in box for less than the original pricing, adjusted for inflation. ($699 today, as opposed to $599 back then, which would be $998 today). Then again, what exactly could be done with them today, other than as a display piece?

    • @thuggeegaming659
      @thuggeegaming659 ปีที่แล้ว

Well they couldn't compete. The industry is to blame as much as the consoles themselves, for better or for worse. The video game industry is an oligopoly, which means it's a business with only a few big players, and they preclude anyone else from entering the market. It's like a few giant trees that prevent any smaller trees from growing.
Now this could very well be better overall for the consumer, the best survive while the rest don't, and we get the best quality, but maybe that's not always true either. In any case, this specific console had a terrible controller, and obviously Apple had no idea what they were doing when they tried to get into the video game market. If anything I think they are better capable of entering the market now, but they've decided not to. I suspect that if one of the Big 3 dies, Nintendo is the most likely to get killed off, a new player would enter to fill the void, which is exactly what happened when Sega failed and Microsoft entered to fill the gap.

Thanks for your using some of my video in this video (starting at 8:35) - I reused in that video some material by others as well :P. However, I did make a small mistake: The footage of the game 'Dazzeloids' is of the original Mac (English) game, as it turns out that game was only released in Japanse for the Pippin. I hope you can require some of the games and do a review someday (too expensive for me...)
Furthermore, a suggestion for your video's on handheld consoles: can you do a video on the 'Nikko digiBlast' some day? It's a failed handheld from relatively recent times (2005) with little info online... It was released in the Benelux, France and Italy, but I don't think it made it to the UK. Yyeeaahhhh!

If Apple wanted a game console, they had the hardware to do it *10 years* before then, way back in 1986. Some minor tweaks would have made an affordable game console version of the Apple IIGS computer, and served to further support the full computer version of the Apple IIGS.
The hardware was easy to program for. Also, it would have been *5 years* ahead of the market. It has the same CPU as the Super Nintendo, which wouldn't come out until 1991. The competition would have been the Nintendo NES, Sega Master System and Atari 5200.
Sadly Apple was hard at work marking sure the Apple IIGS computer would fail: (over pricing it, under-clocking it, failuring to develop software for it, ect.) A real shame too, imagine a computer and a console being able to play the same games... It would have been like Japan's computers. (Famicom, Sega SG-1000, MSX,ect., ect.)
But Apple doesn't know how to to affordable. As a matter if fact, it has always marked *up* the price of their hardware... you know, to give the impression of it being higher quality. The consumer thinks "if it cost more, it must be high quality!" No, seriously, look it up. This has been part of apple's market strategy since the days of the Apple III, LISA, and first Macs.

90% of the anime women are linked to the topic at hand, for example Sailor Moon is one of the key Bandai properties. Apart from catching the eye, I use them to replicate the style of the magazine covers which use to give coverage to these systems in their heyday. Type in PC Engine Fan Magazine or Sega Saturn Magazine and you will know exactly what I am going for. A retro channel deserves retro thumbnails. Most of the recent systems I have featured on the channel are owned by a friend of mine named Quang who is Europe's biggest console collector.
