    My therapist told me to find a healthy outlet for my anxiety. I present to you: watching someone meticulously thread a needle in and out of fabric with soothing music swelling in the background. Is this peak human experience, or a metaphor for the futility of existence? I'm not sure, but my existential dread has never looked so aesthetically pleasing.

    Stumbled upon this channel contemplating XH2S versus FX3. Your blend of audio-visuals and content is quite refreshing…like Stardate (radio serial) but for the art world. Don’t fold to pumping out content faster and faster to meet the need for ‘likes’ and all of that frivolous crap. You take your time making content YOUR way. Great job!

    Hey, audio guy here!
    I'd like to give some infos about mics.
    So the one your talking into (the shure sm7b) is not considered a "caridoit" mic but a dynamic mic. Dynamic mics are best used for either loud things like snare drums or guitar amps, or for recordings where you don't want to here a lot of the room (live singers for example). They take in sound in a cardioid pattern, wich means (basically) that they pick up sound in mainly one direction (mostly front, a bit sides as well) and you have to be pretty close.
    Other patterns would be for example: omnidirectional (picks up sound from every direction) or figure 8 (picks up sound from both the front and the back)
    Besides dynamic mics there are also condenser mics. These typically need 48volts of phantom power to run. The differences between these two types of mics are that dynamics, besides the facts that i already stated, don't pick up the entire frequency spectrum of 20-20K herz. Condensers do and they are more sound sensitive, so they won't block out room sound as well as a dynamic.(hence they are mostly used for studio recordings, cause you need a treated room, but get better sound quality)
    For film making shotgun mics are mostly used, cause they work directional. They are kinda working with a cardioid pattern..but on steroid haha. They block out everything from the back and the sides and only pick up what they are pointed at.
    I hope that helps at least a little bit. Of course there are way more types of mics amd patterns, but these are the most common ones.
    So here are some little tips, if your a film maker looking to buy a mic:
    -Don't buy a ribbon mic (not very versatile)
    -And please don't buy a usb mic (they always sound pretty bad)
    -if your just starting out and want one mic to do it all, get a larve mic (but please for the love of god, use it as intended. That means put it on your damn top or sweater or whatever you are wearing. DO NOT hold it in your hand and speak directly into it, they are nit designed for that and it shows)
    -you could also buy a field recorder. These can be relatively cheap, mostly come with multiple extra mic inputs and different attachment-mics (for example a shotgun attachment or a stereo one)
    Cheers!

    • @QKvox
      @QKvox 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What is your take on mics like the new DJI mic and the Rode wireless mic things that have 32 bit float and I’m pretty sure are omnidirectional. How well would this work in a filmmaking context from your pov?

    • @photopracticum
      @photopracticum 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Shure SM7B is indeed a cardioid microphone. Dynamic and condenser refer to the way the microphone is constructed. Dynamic microphones utilise a diaphragm attached to a coil within a magnetic field, generating an electrical current when sound waves hit it, while condenser microphones employ a diaphragm placed close to a backplate, forming a capacitor that varies its electrical charge in response to sound waves, resulting in differing construction mechanisms with distinct applications in audio recording. Cardioid, on the other hand, refers to the pickup pattern of the microphone- this pattern is heart shaped and picks up sound mostly from the front, a bit less on the sides, and has a null at the back.

    • @martmakesmusic
      @martmakesmusic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@photopracticum that's what i said tho. You just wouldn't call it a cardioid mic, but a dynamic mic. Because it doesn't matter if it's dynamic or condenser or ribbon, is can have a cardioid patter (and sometimes mics have multiple patterns, so it wouldn't make sense to categorize mics based off of them)

    • @martmakesmusic
      @martmakesmusic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@QKvox i don't know this one, so i'd have to take a look at it first. But for me personally, i'd rather not use omnidirectional ones, cause you'd pick up a lot of sound that you wouldn't nesseccarily want to pick up, given that it could be quite unfocused. Let's just say: there is a reason why shotgun mics are often used in film production haha

    • @photopracticum
      @photopracticum 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@martmakesmusic My point is that you can call it both dynamic and cardioid because it is both a dynamic and a cardioid. Sometimes you will want to use a cardioid mic, regardless of it being a condenser or dynamic or ribbon.

    i gotta say man i love your work and ive been into making cinematic videos for around a decade or so and even though i have formidable knowledge to make better videos than i have, there are still areas that i need to improve in that i (through your work) realize i need to utitlize a bit more not only as a stepping stone to further develop a unique style but to expand as an artist in the camera universe. lighting is something that ive been dabbling in at separate time periods of my photography/videography career but havent really had much personal experience in as a minimalist. i mainly focus on many of the same things that i notice you do a really good job of implementing in your work such as composition, lighting, color grading, display of emotion, and directing. which i feel (with enough necessary detail) is all you really need for the bare minimum to make a really appealing video and you are definitely on my list of people to learn from in that regard. I only use a lumix g7 atm. i will eventually get a g9. i usually hold off getting more equipment for budget issues but im not gonna let that stop me from doing what i enjoy so much. your an inspiration for sure and I believe that I can become better overall thanks to individuals like yourself. MUCH LOVE MAN!

    There is 3 main types of microphones only :
    -Dynamic
    -Condenser
    -Ribbon
    They all can have the same differents directivity pickup pattern (from picking up sound 360* to a really narrow angle)
    -Omni
    -Cardoid
    -Supercardioid
    -HyperCardioid
    -Figure of eight or bi-directionnal
    -Shotgun
    you just got to learn about Bit depth, Sample Rate, and Audio levels and your all set, you can learn all this in one week no problem and youll know pretty much everything.
