Excellent précis of Ian Hunter. Shrewsbury Tourism owes you a drink because the history of brickwork and the old photos are fascinating. 😊

Yes Dan is a Shrewsbury boy. 😊.
In the early 90s, I used to see Ronnie Wood about in town a fair bit and of course Robert Plant not too far away either.
I also noticed somebody commented above about The Sex Pistols in Newport....I remember it well as my Mum was manageress of the cafe over the road from the club where they played. The manager would bring the bands over after sound check for a bite to eat. It was a few days before Christmas 1977 and I had to go to work with Mum in those days as I was 7 and (only just) too young to be left at home. John Lydon patted me on the head making a comment about how boring it must be for me in there.....he wasnt wrong!! I had no idea who he was really at that point.
There were a few great bands who played the Village around that time The Cure, Def Leppard, The Pretenders, Whitesnake, Motorhead, The Ruts, John Mellencamp and Toyah to name a few. If I'd have been just a few years older....sighs!!

Glad to have that confirmation 👍 And Thank you for these amazing memories! John Lydon always comes across as a gent to me, also very intelligent, tho at that age (7 yo) grown ups all sorta seem the same lol. What a list of groups!! Newport was a gig hotzone! Of course the Mighty Motörhead are even mentioned 🤘Thanks again for commenting and contributing to the video! 👌👌👌

Ian didn’t settle in Cleveland or the mid-West. Since moving to the US he’s always lived in New York and Connecticut. By the way, I’ve always seen the new market clock tower as a 60’s monstrosity 🥴 The old tower was much classier. I always remember getting on the old Midland Red buses to go and meet with my school pal who lived in Bicton Heath (the No. 3 as I recall)

presented to me when researching the video. Tho yes he has lived in Rural Connecticut for the last 10 years. Thanks also for the Bus station memories and clearing that up 👍

Hi, although I am not a musician, I went to the same secondary school - Priory Grammar school for boys, which is situated between the river and the swimming baths.
The red brick building you referred to was
    Manders paints.

Thanks for clearing that up for us! And thank you for taking the time to tell us. What a coincidence having the same name! I hope it didn’t cause any confusion. I can at least say Ian Hunter himself has viewed the vid. Happy New Year! 👌

That ruckus involving Ian was at a Priory School dance, which he’d gatecrashed, or so legend has it.

Carol Decker was born in Liverpool, but later lived and went to school in Wellington. I don't know whether she ever lived in Shrewsbury?

Born in Liverpool, raised from age 5 in Wellington (her farther was a supermarket manager there). She lived above the Pengwern boat club (in Shrewsbury). The band was formed in and is credited as a Shrewsbury act. She was known for years around the town (by people of a certain age lol) I should’ve mentioned this tho the videos main focus was Ian Hunter. Thanks for contributing 👍

I've known Dan Owen for a good few years. His grandfather and father painted my house 25 years ago. Of course he was only a small child at the time . Many years before then I followed a Ferrari up Port hill, a few days later I discovered it was Eric Clapton on his way to stay the weekend with Ronnie Lane. They used to jam at the Drum and Monkey and the More Arms. Since then at Farmer Phil's Festival I sat on the bonnet of Screaming Lord Sutch's old range rover having a smoke with Katy Lane . I was at school in Newport when Ozzy Osbourne opened his wine bar on St. Mary's Street in 1980, as I was in the 6th form he would serve me at dinner time in my school uniform. Only a half of course.
A lad at school went to the Village Night Club in Newport to see the Sex Pistols. He was on the lower floor and someone above dropped an old style heavy duty pint glass on his head . Unfortunately it was full of urine.
Another time about 15 years ago I was introduced to a very lovely lady in Ludlow. She was Flic Colby, she was the leader of the amazingly sexy dancers called Hot Gossip on Top of the Pops back in the 70's.
Not musically related at all, at a Christmas party at our house in about 1977ish a friend of a friend came along. Turns out he was the director of Worzel Gummage but that ain't rock and roll is it!

These are amazing tales! Thanks for recounting them! Your mate who got a pint pot (of someone else’s urine!) on his head, paid the price for seeing music history!!😱 Tho I’m glad he was alright 👍. Very sad the Drum and Monkey has gone now. I never knew Ozzy had a wine bar in Newport, it’s great info! Coincidentally I watched a very good documentary on the Yesterday’s Papers channel (TH-cam) the other day about Screaming Lord Sutch and his Rolls was mentioned! Again thanks for the great comment 👍👍👌
