This is called diplomacy, plain and simple. To characterize this as SA standing up to anyone is foolish. Countries have allies who have similar views and policies. When your ally says, "I know you don't like X country because of X situation, but we don't care because we have our own agenda" that's not "standing up" or being brave, it's making a choice. The US is with the EU and Ukraine, and Russia invaded a sovereign country (for its own reasons and that's a different conversation), so it stands to reason we would side with our allies. If SA values cheap oil more than its relationship with the West, so be it. SA needs to make decisions based on its needs. However, it's at the risk of tarnishing that relationship. The US stating this is not bullying, it's "diplomacy."
USA can help develop SA, bt our Government must b clear on what they expect from their partners like the US, and most importantly, the SA Government must clean up on governmence, less corruption and state capacity in terms of security and infrastructure development will make SA a better place to live in!

As for AGOA, frankly it is a neoconial arrangement and many of us would love nothing more than for African nations to exit all these neocolonial arrangements, which gives the West levers to sanction, etc. Africa needs to exit the western financial system and western institutions like IMF, world bank, etc as they were all created post world war two to maintain western dominance and impoverish resource rich nations.
Africa has everything it needs to develop. It needs to unite and focus on developing its internal markets as a priority and move away from exporting raw commodities to the West. You on the contrary cannot maintain your living standards without Africa's resources. That's a fact. Your economies were built on the back of African bodies and resources and are still powered largely by Africa's raw materials, so let's not get things twisted.
The Aid has always flowed from Africa to the West, not the other way around, as per the lies peddled by western politicians and media.
