Searching for the 1888 South St Paul Monorail

  • In 1888 the new town of South Saint Paul unveiled an electric suspended monorail train connecting the bluff tops with the Mississippi River valley. Developers Charles Clark and John Bryant hoped the train would catch on, but failed to get the permits needed to extend it. After a few demonstration runs, the track and train were abandoned and eventually demolished. In this video I set out to see if there are any remnants of the old monorail left behind.

"I call the big one 'Bitey'"
    I loved that reference!
Awesome to see that the MN Zoo monorail is in good hands, I just assumed that it was in a landfill or something.

Thanks! We've had some fun with the monorail jokes for sure :-D Some of the other monorail cars that I didn't buy are out in New York state now, there's a guy planning to open a monorail museum one day.

Interesting. Maybe If you metal detected around the sus timber there might be remnants of the bolts or railway spikes they used? Or would they be dust by now...
Cool monorail too. I like Bitey!

Came back to re-watch this great video. Coming from a ‘railway family’ I’ve always been interested in all things rail and also history covering the Industrial Revolution periods.
I’ve been looking into the history of the old railway that used to run behind my house used by the local coal mining industry, some of the previous infrastructure has been restored which is being enjoyed by a good number of people in the local community.
Very interesting to read the plaque and also follow up history about the monorail, I especially loved the old photos of the people riding the suspended car, such a shame that it was unceremoniously destroyed, though your scaled down model does do an excellent job of showing what it looked like Gabe.
On a completely random tangent, when you were down in the valley areas I instantly thought of the classic 80’s adventure film ‘The Explorers’, has a bit of a ‘save it for parts’ attitude to making a spaceship too.
Thank you again for sharing this interesting piece of history with everyone. Best wishes to you, the family and the cats.

Glad you liked it! I remember reading the book version of The Explorers before I saw the movie. Kind of a fun story :-)

I found your video to be very interesting. I only live about a mile from there and have been aware of the monorail for some time now. A number of years ago, I was doing a lot of geocaching and I created a geocache (still in existence) that first took you to the plaque at the church to get coordinates to the final.
I am also into metal detecting and I once detected a home on the Bryant hill and the home owner told me that he had found bits of the monorail in his yard.
I see that somebody below commented that you should metal detect the ravine... that would be an absolute nightmare to metal detect, given all the trash down there. As to the timbers, a couple of those looked like they could possibly be that age, but you have to remember that they didn't have pressure treated wood in those days. I do think they had creosote like we see on telephone poles today, though, so if they were treated with that they may have lasted longer than otherwise would have.
I understand that there was also once a skating rink where that gravel pit was (and you are correct that it was once a gravel pit)
I share your passion for going down the rabbit holes of history like that. It was fun watching your video (and now, I'm going to have to scope out the gravel pit before more homes get built in there!)

You'd love the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn in [Wuppertal] Germany. I've been fascniated by that thing since high school German language class had it in the text book! There are some great cab ride videos online, and I even have old books about the construction of the track and stations.

Doesn't everyone keep a monorail system in their backyard? You could start a day care center or for sure the most unique B&B. Good legwork on a relatively obscure operation. Had a fun time reading a book on an industrial monorail in the California desert that ran on the 1920s and part is still visible

You mean they didn't... save it for parts?

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Its too bad someone didn't keep it. When they scrapped the TCRT streetcars in the 50s someone bought one to use as a cabin. Then later a museum bought it back and restored it to run!
