  • Restored an old stereo tube amp I've had since the 1970s. It was made in Japan about 1960 and sounds great. Replaced electrolytic capacitors, selenium rectifier, open resistors, power cord, one broken tubular capacitor, and one tube.

The amplifier is well built and sounds great. Good design. I listen to it every day. Thanks for watching from way over there.

Found one of these Amps at a second hand record store yesterday for $100. Took a chance and glad I did because it sounds great. Thank you for your video I'll be changing out the 2 conductor power cord and capacitor just as you did other than that it's good to go.

Congratulations! You got a great deal! Once you get the chassis grounded the little "death capacitor" becomes less dangerous. It seems fine without it. Most remove it so I did too. The big caps dry out over time and might let more hum in or fail completely. The selenium rectifier is a time bomb. I listen to mine almost every day. It is now developing noise in one channel after it gets hot. Probably another bad solder connection to track down. I have fixed several cracked solder joints. Not hard to find. Just tap on the signal path with a non-conductive object. Love the sound!

Thanks a lot! - It does sound good. The chassis has some AC running through it - nothing dangerous but you can feel it - I'll work through it and the other items as you suggested. @@beoracha

Thanks. 60 years of dust and rust, almost threw it away. Glad I didn't. It sits beside me at the computer streaming music. Restored an old pair of speakers that were powered by the amp in the 1970s and now they are together again. Big loud computer speakers. 😁

I am constantly amazed at the sound of this thing. Glad there are a few old amps still around. I've blown out and thrown away several newer ones. I listen to it every day and it keeps on cranking out smooth full range audio. Once in a while it gets a bit of noise in a channel and I tap on the signal path to find bad old solder connections. Resolder and good to go for another few years. :)

@@jimcatanzaro7808 I've not seen many of any of the old Realistic amps online. radiomuseum.org has some info. You might have a real rarity.

@@jimcatanzaro7808 Most of mine is pretty solid stuff, real old school. Electrolytic caps have age limits so I replaced all of those, the selenium rectifier, and 2 open resistors.
