Each member has shared their sentiments on the reunion, as well as Mangini's departure. This is something that fans have been waiting for for years, so they've also shared their reactions online. @@crusher0427Bad blood? That was all squashed fairly recently when Portnoy went to a DT show and they hung out, they both made posts about it and said things were good between them.

The psychology behind that is that we don't experience new things anymore, every day is the same, doing the same old things, so time start to speed up. One would think living life to the fullest, and go out and experience thing would speed things up, but it actually slow time down.
It’s great to see Mangini getting all the love, respect, and gratitude from the fans upon his departure! Nobody else could have filled Portnoy’s shoes like that.

Unfortunately, some DT fans hated the fact that Portnoy left and refused to accept Mangini. Now we're seeing the opposite: people hating the fact that Mangini is gone and refusing to accept Portnoy...or at least bad-moouthing him. It's pathetic.
@@Stoovey24People don't like change I guess. For me, Mangini was no doubt a technical powerhouse but I feel Mikes drumming more. It was integral to the sound. I also felt like the production suffered too. It just felt like Dream Theater went flat. Super fast flurries of drums but no attitude. I personally am thrilled about Portnoys return. I might actually start listening to their stuff again... but it is to be seen. Can they bring back the old vibes? Or is it all too late? To be confirmed...

Wow. I didn’t think this day would come. Really, we owe Mangini BIG TIME. Who could have possibly followed Portnoy? Very , very FEW. Mangini really was the very best choice and he not only helped keep DT going, but heavily contributed to some of the most amazing music ever created. Period. His absolute talent is, as James stated, truly “otherworldly”. You know what? MacAlpine, Sheehan and Mangini. Let’s do this!!!

I feel bad for Mangini, but at the same time, I am so happy to see Portnoy return. The music they made with Mike Portnoy is just so special, this reunited lineup to me is the greatest band to ever exist.
I remember emailing Mike (Mangini) when he got the gig (former drum teacher at Berklee). Wanted to congratulate and thank him. Even at the start, he was very humble.
Mangini really did an amazing work and really thought he would be a permanent member- his drumming was out of this world and his charisma was infectious.
But Portnoy is just irreplaceable and so looking forward to their final chapter

Exactly. Can't thank Mr. Mangini enough as what he has brought to the past 13 years, but the feeling of Portnoy coming back is something else.

Portnoy wasn't just the drummer; he was a producer and lyric writer. Even the name of the band... He's back!
He also did promotions and worked heavily on the website.
I’m not sure if this makes it more or less weird but…..it was actually his dad who named it.

Mike Mangini is one of my favourite drummers of all time. He´s a beast behind the kit and will always be recognized as one of the best in Rock´n Roll/Metal history. That being said, Mike Portnoy is also one of the best in history and probably my favourite drummer. In my opinion, he is just a better fit for Dream Theater.
Portoy is for sure the second best drummer DT ever had.
One thing is that Portnoy was an integral part of the songwriting, and not just the drum parts, but the entire song structure

Grew up with Portnoy and he blew my fucking mind. When Mangini joined he was spectacular and loved his unbelievable talent. Now with Portnoy back I am really looking forward to their next album. I am a fan of both Mikes.

@@sampledude8846Totally agree. When I saw him on his first tour with them, he looked like he belonged on a Chuck-E-Cheese stage. Stiff, sterile, totally disengaged. He never interacted with the crowd at all, the way Portnoy always did.

As a fan since their first album, I have to admit I was LOVING what DT did with Mangini ... he's nothing short of amazing. I love Mangini and Portnoy to death, like steak and cheesecake, you like them both but for different reasons. I am sad to see Mangini leaving but I understand that he felt from the beginning he was there to help the band through the second half of their career. AND his drumming helped secure the grammy. Amazing talent, all of them.

This is assuming they continue playing Mangini era material, but if they do then yes certain drum parts of certain songs will probably be (for lack of a better term) dumbed down a bit. But the flip-side of that will be getting to hear those songs with Portnoy's unmistakable groove and feel. That's a worthy tradeoff if you ask me.

@@JohnWiku- Mangini is an exceptional technician capable of playing things that other drummers, including Portnoy, can’t do. He is one of the most technically proficient drummers there has ever been. Having said that, it is music - not a circus act. Portnoy will do fine in his own way, but I doubt he could replicate Mangini’s drum parts. Or would want to…
@@SAHBfan I agree, but it was the same for Mangini when playing Portnoys parts. While he could easily play MPs parts, it never felt or sounded the same. I could tell right away that it wasn't MP when listening to them playing live. In my opinion, they are 2 of the best drummers in the world, but neither could mimic each other enough to not be noticeable sonically. I've seen em live 16 times so far, and i look forward to seeing them another 16 if they go that far. I would love so see them together on stage at the same time. But think about what size the drum crew would have to be if they both had their own kits.
I feel like mangini knew that portnoy reuniting with the band is like bonham coming back from the dead and wanting to reunite with the led. He understood from the beginning that his place in dream theater was only filled as a chapter of their legacy and not the whole picture. I love seeing that level of humbleness in a musician, especially one so talented

Yess! When you listen to Liquid Tension Experiment 3, there's an energy that i missed since Portnoy left. DT was one of my favorite bands with him, and I'm so glad he's back, not just for the music but for him as well

I did not see this coming at all. While DT put out some incredibly solid albums with Mangini behind the kit, their classics were with Portnoy. Also, huge props to Mangini for being a good sport about the lineup change.
He got 13 years with a band many others would have loved to play with for even one album. I don't know the circumstances behind his leaving... or his true feelings on it.
I mean, DT did say some years back that the line-up with Mangini would be the last, so there's that.
Clearly, something changed along the way.
I wonder if, between hearing what Portnoy was doing with bands like Sons of Apollo (so much of that same MP-era DT energy and creativity in those two albums), his work with John Petrucci on the solo album, and then his work with Liquid Tension Experiment 3... I wouldn't be surprised if John and Jordan didn't start to miss that spirit in DTs work and that got the ball rolling. Or.. maybe it was already in their heads, and the JP and LTE albums were them "testing the waters" to see if the chemistry was still there.. And then James LaBrie and MP being able to make amends was the final test... which of course they both passed.
Whatever the case... I'm glad they found their way back to it, and he's now rejoining. I'm ecstatic about the news... both as a fan, and for them as friends.

@@twocatsgaming6628 Can you elaborate on LaBrie and Portnoy making amends? I love the band but haven't been in nearly as deep as I was back in the Octavarium days. I wasn't aware they'd had issues, although I vaguely remember Portnoy understandably expressing some negative feelings back when the split happened.
@@CemeteryGates17 , Portnoy ripped James's singing, and he continued to rag on him after he left. There was always speculation that James was the one who wanted him out, justifiably so.

Distance Over Time might be one of my favorites since Scenes, but I have missed Portnoy.
Mangini was a session drummer in DT, he didn't wrote a single note. Best albums ended when Portnoy left the band

I just read about Mangini's upcoming solo album. Glad for him. Read he was colaborating with Jen Majura on the vocals and some others known as some not so known artists. So many "independent" great musicians nowadays that open a whole new world of possibilities I think. Majura, MacAlpine, Kiko (?), etc. Besides, a new culture for such projects and such talent!! Can't wait to see what comes out, gotta stay positive...so happy for Portnoy, he's my favorite all time drummer. Now there's something to be done in the vocal department.

Mangini can play Portnoy's drum parts no problem. I doubt Portnoy can play Mangini's parts. Mangini is technically on another level. Portnoy has the character and attitude though.
If they continue playing Mangini era stuff they definitely won't be note for note. What we'll probably get is a simpler, but groovier drum rendition. I'll take that tradeoff.
Mike could play Mike's old stuff pretty well. But can Mike play Mike's stuff with Dream Theater?

Mike Mangini is a very humble guy. Appreciate him so much for his incredible work with DT. Mike was also a programme developer for the renowned American Patriot Missile system. He's a living legend.
I have massive respect for both Mike's.

Wow, didn't see this coming. Mangini is a techincal wizard and was the perfect guy to fill and in some cases expand on what Portnoy can do on drums. MP just has more emotion and style in his playing. Glad the gang is back together.
This is the best comment in the thread. Portnoy is not the technical drummer Mangini is - not even close. But, I agree with what you said. Sort of a similar comparison between Donati and Lang, though Donati is about Lang's technical equivalent, and probably exceeds him (according to Lang) in many respects, but everyone knows Lang's foot independence is inhumanly good.
@revyu6754 thanks for the kind words. I feel bad for MM because the man is one of the greatest drummers ever and the way he handled MPs return shows you that he's also a great person. I'm sure he didn't think after 13 years this would be the end of his run with Dream Theater.

Being a drummer I love both portnoy and mangini they’re both obviously capable of playing what dream theater does because of their versatility which makes them one of the best of many drummers in the world

I honestly don't think there's a "better" drummer. Both were great in their own ways. The Main thing for me is Portnoy's contribution to songwriting and lyrics. All his songs had some real teeth.
Nothing against Petrucci's writing style but his songs are more about faith or love. It'll be good to get a new brain in the writers room again.

DT’s record sales and ticket sales were on the decline. The record company will have suggested that with a Portnoy reunion, things would get a boost, for a while. I bet is was all bui$$ness.

Thanks Mike Mangin! I feel for you just thinking after so many years to hear that the band wants to move without you must be heart breaking. Props to you and the other band members to have done this move with what it seems humility, respect and maturity. I must admit that I kind of what seeing this coming when Portnoy did LTE3 and the chemistry that was obvious. While i'm sad for Mangini, I am super happy for the return of Mike Portnoy. And i'm curious to see what other projects Mangini will embark on. Wishing him he founds happiness in his next endeavour.
I think MM always knew that MP was going to return eventually. It wasn't like the band had any turmoil or drama. MP simply wanted a break from DT and the band didn't want to take any time off. He's had his time away and now he's back. MM is coming out with a solo record in November (How's that for timing?) I've heard a couple of cuts, I like it and I'm looking forward to the release. Something tells me MM will be just fine.

Both drummers are really great, but this is so strange, why say....it wasn't a permanent position after 13 years ? In any ones book, it certainly is after 2 or 3 years, so I thought. What was the real reason here ? Looking at the positives, Mangini left amicably !👍👍

While Dt gained fans by the internet, and finally their popularity, They lost their OG fans. This reunion will stir up the old fanbase to buy more albums. I started going to Dt concerts, on their first tour. The last few tours, the seats were half empty, and the shows were not that great. The music suffered while Portnoy was gone. DT knows that. They will make more money with Portnoy.

As weird as it is I find myself driven towards the Mangini era now to completely relive and appreciate the musical foundation he provided...
Now bring Kevin Moore back, also PLZ. That dude carried your asses to stardom with his songwriting on I&W and Awake.

It's a shame the albums under Mangini were underwhelming. Mangini was never the weak link in the band and his drumming was definitely the highlight of those more recent albums. Dream Theater more suffered from Portnoy's lack of creative input rather than just his drumming in my opinion. Also LaBrie's age has definitely affected his singing ability this past decade, I really wonder if this reunion will be enough to return the band to their former glory.
It won't, but thats how the DT community works xD I was never a fan MP. Skill alright, but Magini's aura was positive as fuck. So i rather watch him playing than Portnoy.
The real weak-link is clown music Jordan, every album he ruins with his fkn clown music.
You are spot on - it wasn’t Mangini’s drumming that was the issue - it was that the other four thought they could be as creative without Portnoy - and they couldn’t.
not a huge DT fan but I'm super happy for Mike, the band and all the diehard fans. They certainly have the odd banger I love!
