  • Cal Newport talks about Fixed-Schedule Productivity in this "Habit Tune-Up" segment of Episode #193.
Fixed-Schedule Productivity is one of Cal's oldest ideas. The premise is that you fix the schedule you want to work. Then move backwards from that to make things fit.
This is meta-productivity because it induces lots of evidence-based custom-fit tactics.

So basically, the opposite of "The work to be done will tend to expand to fit the time available" lol Seriously though, I'm a humanities professional/soon-to-be PhD candidate with ADHD, & I'm coming to the conclusion that a disciplined adherence to methods like this are going to be the only way I can function effectively at all & avoid severe burnout. Not a self-improvement hack, but a true survival strategy. Please keep up the good work! We need all the help we can get...

I was in a really tough grad program and used this mindset. Not only did it help keep me and my marriage healthy, but I was actually as effective as my classmates who seemed to never stop working.

Gosh, I've just installed the Freedom software to block TH-cam, now I find out that you have a TH-cam channel! I'll have to restrain myself from binge-watching ;-)
Anyway Thanks Cal, your interventions have improved my performance at work by 100%, also in the family I am much calmer, the housemates thank you ;)
    Have a very nice day

The fixed timing schedule will really force me to think how much and what I have to do in the slot. The rest of the time will be free for fun and whatever comes to my mind. Thanks Cal:))

Good to see you here Cal. You have challenged and changed my perspectives about how to be an outlier. Thank you for your teachings.

This is so interesting and thought provoking. Always been a big fan of 'reverse engineering' something and this is really a great example of that kind of thing in action. Thank you so much for sharing this.
