I just found your video, and this is a problem I have had forever!!! I am 56, but love to sing and have accompanied voice teachers for years. So, I know good technique in my head, but haven't really practiced singing. The "break" was so embarrassing, I didn't want to sing. This video finally gives me hope!! Can't wait to keep practicing! Thank you!
Hello Kerri , Im 8 yrs old aspiring singer , you are the best vocal coach .i learn a lot from ur videos ..im also learning from Brett manings both of you are the best coaches ..God bless you..
I am a voice teacher and I like very much your videos. Sometimes I post your videos so my students can see it. I like your teaching! God bless your gift!
Fantastic! That's what it should fee like - lots of buzz in the nose! You get less resonance elsewhere because you're no longer in your mixed voice. Mixed voice is characteristically extra resonant especially in the nose. The chest voice resonates in the chest and the head voice in the head - that's why you don't feel it as much when not in your mixed tone
You're a saint, my singing teachers were never able to even explain so accurately the system of mixed voice, much less actually give me any exercise to develop it, they just left me wondering what it was and up to myself to discover if I should even use it, Jesus... Thank you!
Glad my vids are helpful. Yes it is normal to feel tired especially when you first start bc your voice is not used to being stretched. However, if you are using correct technique, it should get better and soon you shouldn't feel tired anymore. If you keep feeling tired, you are likely not using correct technique so be careful
Hard question to answer, as the answer will vary with every person. However in my experience as a vocal coach for 8 years i've seen people generally add at least 1-2 octaves to their range - which the 2 most essential ingredients - 1) a great vocal coach and 2) determination & discipline to practice
Kerri , I really gad you are on my team ..... You have a gentle ,caring delivery ,that is full of content .... I use your lessons every day ..( It hasn't been that long ... I discovered you 2 weeks ago) I am experiencing a more flexible and fun time .... Next I'll be working on my range and the must be mastered , break .... Thank you for your posts
You are awesome Kerri.. I've been going thru all your videos. and they are very helpful to find my mistakes.. It feels shame to know that i've been using wrong vocal chords all these years which has caused me vocal twist! :( Hopefully i'll come to you for one-to one session in future to improve myself.. I just cant believe how you've uploaded so many useful videos for free!! You are simply GREAT! KEEP IT GOING! :)
Thanks - I'm so happy you like my vids and that you're finding them helpful =) In terms of knowing whether or not you are singing in mix, well the first thing is that yes you will feel a good deal of buzzing in the mask, secondly it shouldn't feel strained at all, thirdly it is a sound that travels forward and fourthly it sounds strong yet feel easy on the throat
That's fantastic! I'm so glad to hear that! Mic technique - well very simply, hold the mic at a 45 degree angel to your lips, like an ice cream cone and sing right into the front/centre of it. Though different mics will give different qualities of sound. My fave is the Shure SM 58 for the best vocal sound
Sarah Brightman usually uses head voice. Sierra - depends on what she's singing. For Phantom - it's head voice. For Little Mermaid it's chest belt. I love Sierra Boggess by the way ! =)
Thanks for taking the time to provide your advice and comments. I guess I might be overthinking it :) I will give this a try and hopefully get over this. It's good to know I'm not the only one with the problem and that it can be overcome! Best wishes to you!
so that's the reason why i feel pain in my chest when I try to sing in mixed voice, i'm actually pulling it up. thanks for the tip, this should help me a lot :)
This is very helpful. I have started singing again after a long break due to illness and really struggling with a very weak place between chest and head where my voice breaks. This is the main area I am working on at the moment, and this exercise is very useful.
Thank you...hope you can share with other singers too. Everyone can LEARN to do riffs.. need to first of all practice flexibility in voice, then train ear to ad-lib
Thank you Kerri, you are a splendid coach. I want to learn about singing falsetto and whether there is a mix for men. I am a man in case you hadn't guessed!!😀
Hey Kerri u are really amazing !!!! u help me a looot I'm really so glad ^^ please can u send us the Accompaniment of the mixed voice exercice please reply as fast as u can cuz I really need it soon
This helped me so much! I am in musical theater for my high school and we're singing "I feel so much spring" from A New Brain for an upcoming performance, this song involves a lot of mixed notes for mostly the alto parts. I'm so happy that with that exercise, I'm already finding it easier to mix. THANK YOU!
very very good tutorials you have. actually after watching so many videos to understand what mixed voice is, you were the only one who could really explain it. thank you!
Thank you! I used to think, that when I do these exercises (like gug, goog and so on) I should sing right away with no break. I used to push and pull up my chest like you showed. Now I've realized that we need just to wait the mix will develop and head voice will become stronger. So instead of pulling we should just relax and wait wait wait.
It isn't really a different register, it is quite literally as the name suggests, when you mix some of your head voice and some of your chest voice to sing. Quietening the chest voice helps you to put some head into your chest sound
Dear Kerri I can sing the GOOG, NAY, MUM etc Speech level exercises without any break for some time, But the perennial issue is HOW does one then actually apply these exercises to singing all the time? In an actual performance context, one cannot just forget about technique, start singing, and then try the song again using a GOOG exercise. I tried using each of these vowels for the song but when you start singing the song with vowels and consonants, one tends to lose that sensation that gets your voice connected. This is more so for guys than female singers, I feel. Appreciate your input in this. Thanks!
Hi there! It does take time to build stamina and control over the vocal break. The fact that u r getting it on the exercises is already a great step forward, so don't give up. I can't tell you if you are doing it wrong or not without actually hearing you. What I can suggest is if you're still having trouble with it for a long time after this and your're getting frustrated, you can book in a 30 min Skype lesson with me and we can work on that specific song...whatever you do..don't give up!
I understand your frustration Stefano. It often takes a little longer to apply the exercises to a song - bc songs are varied and often the approach may need to be altered slightly - this is where the help of a Coach will really help to pin point exercise how to apply the exercise into a song. But don't give up, keep trying and let me know if you need further help down the track
Thank you so so much!! I've had a couple instructors try to help me with this issue, but this exersize has been more effective than any other ones previous instructors have tried with me! Thank you!!!
This video and all your other videos are great practice tools. I appreciate that you are willing to share. with you and youtube and free time I can rehearse again.
Your video was so helpful. I love singing gospel music. I am struggling when singing in my higher voice. My voice changes. I want a smoother transition.
You probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can stream pretty much all the new movies on Instaflixxer. Have been binge watching with my girlfriend for the last days :)
thank you for posting this video, i always thought there was something wrong with my voice because no one seemed to understand what i meant by a "break" in my voice, now i really understand what i need to do to strengthen my voice :) :) :) ~katherine
This was fantastic. I have been singing for some time and have developed good strength in my mixed voice by sometimes still have trouble making that connection. This exercise is great. Thanks for sharing.
That was so much more helpful than all the other tutorials out there! Thank you so much! I'm just wondering if you could maybe do a video on how to sing in head voice? Is it just the same thing as falsetto?
Hard for me to tell you without hearing you and coaching you in a one-one session...I guess it doesn't really matter if you are happy with the sound. Good luck!
Hey there..yes head voice when developed properly should sound pure and not airy at all, wheareas falsetto is airy. Thanks for your encouraging comments - I appreciate it and am glad you subscribed!
You can always grow your chest voice capacity through lessons and practice. It sounds like you could be bringing your head voice down, but I don't know for sure until I hear you sing.
Its a different setup for the vocal chords. But essentially it sorta feels like falsetto, but with less air leaking. You can also feel a vibrating sensation through your nosepassage and the top of your mouth. Kinda hard to explain, but as my vocal coach instructed me and told me when i was doing it right, i remember the feeling.
Yes mostly like mixed when you felt it had both chest and head. If you would like your top notes to be more mixed and not just head voice - check out my How to Belt video series
It's a common problem for all singers so you're not a lone. If you've been trying to teach yourself this and it's not working and your very frustrated, maybe you should consider one on one coaching
Your videos are great! Could you tell us more about the vowels and their effects in exercises? How would singing in "mamama" be different with "cucucu" or so on? Much appreciated!
Thank you Kerri Ho for explaining this to all of us. It's been very helpful. Now, I always go to 5:05 and practice the vocalization word (goog). And it seems like I am getting stronger each week I practice.
Thank you for this and your other videos. Doing a performance of Ann Peeble's "I can't stand the rain" today. Third verse is the one and a half octaves, the most powerful part of which is all in my head voice. This was a great tip and a great warm-up for that four lines of awesome in the song.
Hi ! hmm..ur right without hearing you I can't really say for sure what is happening. However what I do find is often the case is that guys really hate the sound voice of their head voice initially. This could be what it is, that at the moment you are using a lot of head voice in your mix and not liking the sound. You need to learn to eventually put some more chest in it. Watch my How to Belt part 3 video for how to do that
Hi again! No I haven't thought about that until you brought it up =) Well, in the mean time there is always Skype which takes me to singer's homes all over the world =)
Hi Kerri, thanks so much for your videos, I've been using them exactly for getting my head voice stronger and more accurate. Still a lot to improve (see my last video Falling Slowly). Greetings from France!
Found my mix voice @ 1:18 after singing along to the scale and the sentence after it. It just magically activated, there was so much resonance up my nose and mouth my nose and tongue itches! I get a lot less resonance when not singing at this particular pitch though.

Everyone can learn - with a good coach, the right tools and determination and practice
You really are gifted at teaching voice training techniques. Thank you so much.

Falsetto has a weaker more breathy sound, while a well-trained head voice resonates beautifully and is clear
5:05 is where the practicing part starts. :D
CarrionSpirit you deserve an award 👏
CarrionSpirit I
Kerri , I really gad you are on my team .....
Hi Jeffrey, correct placement always starts with singing in the mask of the face. As you get higher the resonance moves higher.
Pure head voice is clear and bell - like. Falsetto is slightly thinner in quality and can be breathy
You are the only person who actually tells people exactly what to do you say everything so clearly thankyou sooooo much
Oh wow.... I started doing this excersize about a month ago.... MY VOICE IS SO MUCH STRONGER. THANK YOU SO MUCH :)
It does take time to develop a good mix - and of course correct technique. If it doesn't feel pushed - that is a great start.
You are awesome Kerri.. I've been going thru all your videos. and they are very helpful to find my mistakes.. Yes lowering the larynx certainly helps to eliminate strain and give more depth to the sound! Thanks for sharing =)
Thanks Marc - I appreciate the support =)
Thanks for taking the time to provide your advice and comments. I guess I might be overthinking it :) I will give this a try and hopefully get over this. It's good to know I'm not the only one with the problem and that it can be overcome! Best wishes to you!

singing in mixed voice is how you get a clear connection
You're welcome! Keep practicing.
I appreciate this video for my vocal student who is working on mixed voice. Thanks!
Good idea, yes one day I will when I get the time. Thanks for the suggestion !
my pleasure!
Thank you...hope you can share with other singers too. Everyone can LEARN to do riffs.. need to first of all practice flexibility in voice, then train ear to ad-lib
thank you! i don't have a break, so i've blended my chest and head voices but i had so many problems with my mixed voice being weak

You should feel both as mixed tone does also include chest resonance
I'll think about that for a possible future video...thanks!
She uses a combo of both, depending on the song. But yes I agree, Beyonce is amazing!
Great, Fitri, that you are starting at a young age! I wish you all the best!
Yes if you practice correctly and are guided by a good coach. But it is also important to learn how to apply technique to songs.

I don't have the resources to do that yet, but will keep your idea in mind for future =)
Yes doing this everyday will help you build great endurance and control over your vocal break. Thanks for the compliments re the video and the hair =)
Light exercises only like bubbles and hums. Steam. Honey and lemon drinks. Lots of water!
I can't really tell if I'm singing with my mixed voice, when I sing I still just kinda flip into head voice...
You probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can stream pretty much all the new movies on Instaflixxer. Have been binge watching with my girlfriend for the last days :)

Strengthening your break is so important pushing your chest voice is just a false bridge
Patience guys it will come promise!!
Thank you so much Kerri

this is my favorite vocal excersize young lady you rock!!!!
Thanks!!!!
You are very good! Your videos are really helping answering the questions I have regarding singing. Thank you so much,

awww...thank you! It's Australian
everyone has the potential to do it, some are just more naturally inclined, and others just need to practice more
Shouldn't be loud at first, the volume will come when as your mixed voice develops
I've been always wanted to try the high note but my voice keeps breaking.
thanks..she's a wanderful actress!
thanks,, Kerri Ho.... i feel very fresh after following u.
I had the same question too:
how do you blend in or mix your chest and head voice ?
How do you put in the technique you have learned?
Yes that finally explained mixed voice to me. Thank you Kerri.
