Son and I just started a 1997 GMC Sierra. I can’t wait to finish it and give it to him for his 16th bday in about 2 years. Truck looks great. Keep up the videos.
Thank you! My son and i did this for his first truck too! One year later.....he has kept it spotless inside and out. When they invest with their own hands it seems to make them appreciate it more.
Watched the whole thing, got to the end, and laughed when you said "way too much time on your hands". I was thinking to myself, I don't think I would have the patience to do all of those steps to get the body/paint perfect like that.... But, I will sit and watch this whole video lol. Truck looks great!
Where have I been? This is the video I been trying to find… this gives me so much inspiration to start on my 1994 Chevy k1500, wire wheeled whole frame, and primed then sprayed gloss black, now have inspiration to start sanding down the body and get ready to paint. Awesome video man keep up the great work!
This was amazing to watch. Auto body is something iv never learned, but as a mechanic I love to do my own work on everything and want to tackle patch panels, blocking, etc on a 97 service truck I just bought. If I mess it up it’s just a work truck haha
Love all the tips and info, finally someone who takes pride in their work and is unbiased to products, you should make a video on diy paint tools you recommend
I did enjoy this video and I watched the whole thing. I’m rebuilding a box and changing rockers and cab corners too. This video covered all the things I’m trying to do. Sometimes my brain says I won’t be able to do it. But you just press on. Thanks for the lift. Great video.
Look FN GREAT! I'd say that nobody could really ask for more. I'm getting ready to do a resto job on my 1997 Z71 EXT-CAB 5.7L 4X4. I have a Skyjacker 2"-2.5" lift kit with front lower A-arms & front diff drop bracket. I also have a 3" body lift kit with a pair of RC tubular Nerf bar side steps waiting to go on, that will hide the frame from the body lift. I'm building this as my work truck & play truck for hunting, camping, etc, which is why I chose the kits that I did. To offer more travel & clearance over stock, yet maintain great on road characteristics. Because she will be on asphalt 80% of the time (I work on mine sites). With the wheels & tires, I was rotating mass conscientious too! I have aluminum alloy 20x9 wheels with 4.5" back spacing. For rubber, I went with Venom Power XTs 275/60/R20 (33" tall × 10.8" wide) witch yields a great ride, responsive but not too rough handling, decent off-road prowess and good MPG, paired up the factory 3.33 rear gear, makes for a fun, yet practical setup. Your video has convinced me to do a digi-camo paint job using stencils with a matte clear coat. This should be a bit more forgiving choice all the way around. From painting, to imperfections, scratches, Arizona-pinstriping, dirt & dust, etc. Plus, a large pattern digi-camo will just look tits (I went with black wheels as well). You should be proud of that beautiful red Chevy, she's a head turner for sure! Thank you for taking the time to make this comprehensive video! It really shows what it takes to make a great paint job in a garage. Do you have any other tips for painting over chrome bumpers?
Thank you and thanks for watching! I like the matte clear. It should be a perfect choice for your project. And it will definitely hide some things a gloss doesn't. Take your time on the chrome make absolutely sure you get it scuffed. Self etch or epoxy primer. I have come to prefer epoxy. Theres a great video on just this topic on Stout Customs channel. He is a great resource. Good luck with your project.
I buy from a local paint supplier. If you want great results you gotta use great products regardless of what internet trolls might try to make you believe.
Lol I work nights so theres not a whole lot I can do during the night besides make a crap load of noise working on my house. Plus watching your video helped me a lot because im working on my project truck. Appreciate the Information a lot!

Also I find it pretty crazy that this just popped up on my TH-cam and I actually work with the guy! I mean I don’t even have social media, so it just recommended it by shear luck. Cool video. Congrats on your hard work. I’m in the midst of either selling my 2-door Yukon or plunge into restoration. You give me hope that it can be done. I’m stealing “sometimes you have to sit back and punt” to my sayings.

I had basically $2000 in paint, sandpaper and other body work materials including tape and masking materials as well as body filler etc. The truck as it sits including the purchase price of $2500 has a little over $12,000 in it.
Just a thought but since ya had the little holes in the bumbers ya coulda put little led lights in those holes and had some chicken lights. Idk just a thought that’s all enjoy the video…

thank you! I think we probably will change the taillights when the boy has more money. He was able to afford those and they will do for now
Why use fiberglass under the body filler? Is that just to fill gaps?
always use a fiberglass product over a weld to ensure moisture doesnt find its way into the body work.
