Thank you for doing this follow up! I think SJP, I give her major props for going a different route, because its such a big risk with the legacy of Carol Burnett behind her. There was a sweetness and sincerity i saw of her in Hocus Pocus that i feel translates to a role like this extremely well, i just feel hints of that same graciousness here. Which honestly, it wipes away any complaints i could have about her not being as completely and traditionally outright BOLD bold, but she stands out in a really special way because she plays to her strengths. And never shies (no pun intended) away from them

Lol no you meant the pun!!! 🤣 It really does show to understand your strengths as a performer and work on the “weaknesses” to grow your skills.

@PerformancePerspective alright MAYBE I meant it 😂 you know what's funny? How last time, I brought up that to make something like this song work, it almost needs that whiplash effect? I think you nailed it with the body language SJP does for this: if the rest of the number was more at her beat, I think if I were in the audience, I would've cried laughing. Because that's exactly what I'd want to see out of this, that abrupt change you aren't prepared for. I think she perfectly gets that, it's just everything else working against her.

I think a lot like Carol having her own performing persona, SJP has a brand of being cute, a little quirky, a little sexy, and smart all at the same time. It's clear that a lot of that comes through this performance and would later come through even more when she played Carri in Sex and the City shortly after doing this show. Is it perfect? No, but that's the charm of SJP as a performer. She's this fascinating hybrid of being beautiful but not in the conventional way, and the same can be said for her acting style and public presentation.
Also, as a side note, I genuinely miss when Broadway would allow for performances like this, and especially ones like Carol Channing, to exist. Now I feel like every female performer has to be a soprano that belts, or otherwise they're considered untalented. It's a shame among shames and also makes Broadway so bland nowadays when it comes to the talent on display.

You're hitting the nail on the head. The classic soprano roles seem to be vanishing before our eyes, with the "pop belt" style taking center stage. I've actually explored this in one of my recent videos, where I talk about Broadway's transformation into something that feels a lot like Vegas. It's all about chasing commercial hits now, with an increasing number of movie adaptations, jukebox musicals, and biopics about famous singers dominating the scene. It's a trend that's reshaping the landscape of musical theatre as we know it.
