I see a lot of people saying this song reminds them of being hollow, forgotten, betrayed. And when I think about it, it makes sense. Waterfall is home to the dump where humans throw their trash away. What else lives there? Monsters. The monsters were thrown away and forgotten by the humans. They were left hollow, forgotten, and betrayed. It makes the song fit the area even more. The violins that come in make me think of the sorrow of the monsters and how they’re mourning their fate.
To pacifist runners this feels like you are on a quest to free everyone from the curse they are in To the genocide runners this feels like you are on a quest to get out of the underground and get rid of anyone interfering. Toby, you are someone I look up to
Nah, not really. In the Genocide run you aren't freeing anyone because, you can't free dead people. And if you are saying that in the Genocide run you are freeing them by killing them, it's technically not true because Napstablook can't die. In the Neutral runs you keep them trapped.
The Waterfall actually creeped me out when I played. It was so eerie, and rundown, shadowed into darkness. The fact that it told the story of the monsters made it even worse. Such a beautiful, eerie area, with some of the strangest characters in the game. Also, knowing I could encounter Goner Kid didn't help.
I found him in my first and blind playthrough and I gasped at what he said... I couldn't sleep because I just kept thinking how possible that could be... How can a video game character chenge the image you have about everything... WOW
“Lie to yourself all the time. It makes you feel better.” “I can’t go to hell, I’m all out of vacation days.” “I’m nineteen years old and I’ve already wasted my entire life.” “Never interact with attractive people. Unless you're one of them, they’re just gonna take advantage of you.” “Never let hot people think you care. That’s how they get you.” “‘Friendship is just a hot person’s way of making you their slave.” “I’m just trying to survive.” “Ah... my boss. I love that guy. And by that I mean I hate him so, so much.” -Burgerpants
@That Random Gamer, Like a time travel thing or glitch in the space time continuum gone horribly wrong that created a permanent Timeline everywhere where you are still existent and interact except everyone even your close ones make you an unidentifiable... This is the best song on the soundtrack. Just imagine a monster making a wish with all there heart. This is the perfect theme for that. "Hoping that Someday the monsters will see the real stars, fills you with Determination."
@@emsiyes speaking of gaster, waterfall has the infamous gaster room but you need a FUN value of 66 to get the 1 in 10 chance to actually get it in game. In other words, gasters room is extremely rare
He should stay kinda secret tbh. If he went public and showed his Face and told us more about him, fans and stans would be through the roof. Its sad to see that so many things he has made are full of controversy
this was hands down my favorite part of undertale. when you walk through this dark watery area, with yourself seeming to be the only thing there, while you read a story of two people talking about their dreams to look at the stars above. I actually cried a little when I heard this music during waterfall for the first time. it's such a powerful and atmospheric song that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, especially during genocide.
"This day, we fought, 'til our monarch called for our retreat Though it never came, we keep up our pace until the break of dawn Although the sky above me is nothing more than a fantasy I wish on the stars for my spirit to carry his will in peace I hear the angels calling for my weary spirit now And now it seems I have fallen down my very last time I see the flowers, they echo my each and every word And now I send out a message unto the end of time. And now I rest My energy is spent."
Sophia Smith thank you// i wrote it about a hypothetical monster hero who retreated into waterfall during the war and died in peace there the song struck me as kind of a lament
I find it difficult to sit down and listen to Undertale soundtracks when I'm not playing the game. It fills me with too much nostalgia- I'll cry if I listen to this for too long, I'm certain. It's really been almost six years, hasn't it?
Same here. I tried to study to Hopes and Dreams the other day… I ended up just crying for a few minutes because I was so filled with -determination- nostalgia
I showed my mom, who had never seen or played undertale, the undertale soundtrack. Of all the tracks, she started to tear up when she heard this one. Said "It sounds so different from the other tracks, like the composer wanted to get a message across or set a very different tone." I think when music can tell you all that without ever uttering a word, you know you have created a masterpiece.
I can really see the thought and background put into this region. The thought of making stars out of rocks, wishing to once see real ones, the heroine who wants to not only get a human soul, but avenge those who have fallen under the character, not just themselves, but the whole underground. The echos of the previous ones who have gone there, the dreadful feeling you get from the desperation from the past, and maybe even the present.
When all the monsters in the area started wishing they could escape, I really felt I had no right in surviving. I was starting to feel DETERMINATION for something else... would my life really count more than all of theirs? That's why this soundtrack is so sad to me.
+An Octorok except, if he takes your soul then, he fulfills his promise and must go to the surface and kill all of humanity. or flowey already stole the other souls, and destroys everything whether or not Asgore takes your soul
+savegalkissy Yup. That's the reason I almost wanted to give up. Almost. The monsters may be cool, funny and stuff, but I'm a human, and in the end I valued my human friends more. That's why... when I found out Asgore's plans...in my first run, I actually... well... Call me a prick, but I prefered to live happily on the surface. Well, of course before Pacifist kicked in, but in that moments I only wanted to go home, and forgot about monsters' pain. Can I really be called out for what I did?
Unironically one of Toby's best works in his music career, Waterfall is one of the most surreal experiences in the game. There's just this...Gentle, yet somber feeling to it. As loud as this song can get, it doesn't feel harsh or rough, just a sort of...Soft and depressing crescendo.
Excuse me... Yes, you, with the striped shirt. Can you do something about your friend...? Yes, your friend... The one behind you, with the creepy smile.
have you ever stood at a height or near the edge of something like a cliff before and felt this quiet but distinct urge to throw yourself off of it for no logical reason? this is called the call of the void and it can occur in people for a number of reasons, but seems to be linked to a primal sense of curiosity and spite. you would never give into the feeling, but it still alarms you when you feel it because it makes you question your own sense of self preservation. this song makes me think of what it would feel like to just sit at the edge of a seemingly infinitely deep water fall and just contemplate "what if"
So relaxing and beautiful, a place to whisper your most hopeless dream, a place for honest, for hapinness and sadness . A place for home... but where’s home?
This song reminds me of my first programming assignment, I was so confused and scared, but this amazing song helped me focus. I still feel like it was yesterday
So, I have a question. I understand that the NPC in the waterfall asks a series of questions in an innocent, childlike manner pertaining to the existence of stars and what they really are that are meant to represent the game's message, but I don't know if I've gotten it entirely correct. Here's my theory - "What's a star?" Meant to signify the question of 'what is a hero' and 'can a hero really save us'; basically, the star is a beacon of hope and the question is can everyone really put their faith alone in something that very few have ever seen with their own eyes?"Can you touch it?" Indication of how the player chooses to go about the game - whether or not they choose to touch the lives of the other characters and give them faith in something other than a vague prophecy, or to destroy them."Can you eat it?" This is really the one I need help with. I have *lost sleep* trying to figure out this metaphor."Can you kill it." Should be pretty obvious but, in the pacifist route, when fighting Asriel you literally cannot die and, in the genocide route, Undyne and Sans sort of become the heroes of the story (though they ultimately fail if you finish) and both are incredibly difficult to kill (Undyne the Undying's prelude theme being But the Earth Refused to Die and Sans easily avoiding almost every attack)Lastly, "Are you a star." Again, this goes back to the question of, "How will you choose to play the game?" The game itself is literally asking you whether or not you will be the hero of the story and become the beacon of hope. So, yeah, that's what I've gotten so far. Feel free to leave constructive criticism and your own thoughts on the matter; I'd love to hear them!
I think it just refers to the fact that, in the underground, there are no stars to be seen. A child identifies the things around him by his senses, so he askes those questions in order to get an idea of what a star is, so he could immagine it better. It's pure and innocent curiosity, and it's so beautiful and so sad at the same time, becouse the monsters know that they could never know what a star is. That's what I think, at least. Maybe both of us are right.
LunarTanaka Well, I mean, it's art - it's supposed to be interpreted. And, yeah, that seems like a perfectly valid interpretation, a child who wishes to know what a star is by asking questions that he can comprehend. But I prefer taking things to a metaphorical level, so I'm probably reading way too much into it, haha;;
Oh Waterfall, my favorite place of all of Undertale. The eerie feeling that it gives, its certainly atmospheric. The song suits it perfectly ! Love it .......!
Had to come back and remember this masterpiece, to cope with a little breakdown. It used to scare me with its grave notes and tense melody, but now I listen to it and it feels... just beautiful, like a place to reflect and do introspection in silence, as you see the water flow and let yourself be
This song gives off so many emotions you can almost feel the some sort of joy but also eeriness and a whole lot of other things but this is one of my favorite tracks in the game just because of how it fits so well with the surroundings
This is my favorite area in Undertale....Wanna know why? The beautiful ambience as well as the relaxing sound of the Waterfall pouring down. Monster Kid's Innocence and fun banter as we wander in this unknown area makes us less anxious about crossing such a dangerous path as Undyne's chasing us down The various moments where light fades out and reappears, the spectacle of these beautiful stars makes my heart pound. The Temmie village, of course, so random and so hilarious that it makes you forget that a murderous fish is after you. And of course, this beautiful piece of music.
Honestly, this music fits perfectly with the game's atmosphere, as you learn about how a large civilization crumbled to the ground, and the effect it had on it's people.
Deep down, whispers We can hear them all Your inner voice What will it tell us The deepest abyss of your soul It can’t hide Conflict, turmoil Unfaltering kindness Apprehension Determination All those feelings mixed up An array of thoughts Will you fight or show True mercy You have to make that choice Will you save your friends Escape then Show them the world above Will you set him free Mercilessly Write your wish in the dust Two sides are playing A tough game An endless tug of war Which will win Savior or murderer
This theme, the sense of danger and the feeling to be costantly watched by Undyne that I felt during my first run, the beautiful place, the words of the Echo Flowers... it all filled me with DETERMINATION. This game is truly beautiful.
it's so atmospheric and touching. Definitely one of the places I won't forget. One of the more creative and chilling places with it's song and the concept of echo flowers and shining/glowing rocks as stars. There is just so much I love about this place I can't even mention it all in my comment. Kudos to Toby for creating such a phenomenon of a game.
No more of that speed 2 talk shall we? Let's all just enjoy the slowness of this melody of a odd mixture between melancholy and beauty, that is how it is suppose to sound like, let's all embrace the slow, peaceful tunes and not the swift, heart-pounding tunes. That's how I like it, slow, graceful, and gorgeous.
*This is one of my most favorite song tracks from this game. Toby Fox put A LOT of time in this game and I hope that Deltarune will be just as fantastic as Undertale, if not better.*
*You spot a castle which is dimly illuminated by the crystals hanging from the ceiling of the cave. *You smile to yourself, it's such a beautiful sight to behold. *As you turn around to walk away, you are filled with determination *Maybe you will find your way out.
Currently playing through the game for the first time You can farm 3 gold each time you ride with the fish. I'm really enjoying the game, especially for the ost's.
When Undertale came out, I was suffering from depression. Today I came back to listen. I found an old thread of comments I wrote and... all the feelings came rushing back. I've cried. I've cried tears of joy. I had forgotten how alone I felt. I had forgotten how bleak everything seemed to me. I forgot how untrusting I was of people. I'm better now. I was able to extricate myself from that seemingly hopeless situation. In these five years, I've understood my life has meaning, and I'm worthy. I reached out to people, and I found I was loved all along. I met new people, I loved them and they loved me in return. I won'te be depressed again because I know they got my back. I will never feel alone again. I've come a long way. Some of those past feelings still haunt me, and I have sporadic depressive episodes, but I know I won't fall back to it again. And seeing myself from then, and seeing myself from now... Despite everything, I'm still me. Despite everything, I still WILL be me. This song will forever remind me that much.
Lookin back at this, Waterfall seems like the tipping point of our journey... I mean, the Ruins has you learning the way(s) of the underground and how to survive, Snowdin introduces a more interactable, goofy feel to your journey as you progress, then you hit Waterfall... Where things start to get a little more serious, you're halfway through and there's the looming threat of Undyne, who literally CHASES YOU whenever you flee... To me, this overworld theme seemed more like the realization of the human realizing that as Papyrus calls and asks what they're wearing, which way they're going, how they are; Undyne is getting this information from Papyrus (inadvertently) and she's right on your tail. Then you got the temmies. Nothing to say about the items except best boys/gals
This song sounds like something being horribly torn away. Something you held dear is suddenly gone, without much in the way of warning. and you had to stumble in and find out the hard way. And now all you can do is watch.
I don't know if this is really a vent or not, but i recently started listening to the undertale soundtrack again, best memories I've had in years....and for some reason...i started crying during this this song...a lot. I don't know how to explain this, but it reminded me of when i used to obsess over the stars, so beautiful...So far away...and so alone...I'm sorry if this is a silly thing to get emotional over...
If this fandom was dead when you posted _your_ comment, It's back from the grave now. I guess you could say.. *Time is going to have to try a little harder than THAT.*
"Have you ever thought about a world where everything is exactly the same...except you don't exist?" "An umbrella...? But it's not raining." I feel like this track was made around these quotes - around the realization of the inevitable and the delinquencies we fathom of existing.
I stopped walking around and even playing the game just to listen to this music. I love this piece. It's so strong, yet delicate. It was really send the message across on how badly the monsters want to be free.
The very beginning gives me the image of some kids running and playing in a site where there once was a great battle, unbeknownst to them. The eerie air wooshing sound is them getting closer to uncovering something. They then stumble upon texts. They read a tragic story with a heroic opening. The grand orchestral sound is them realizing the simultaneous horror and awe at what they read. The other image it gives me is of a tragic hero. The beginning reflects their quieter moments. That same air wooshing is them preparing for the task that must be done. As the orchestral sound begins to set it with that middle part they travel. The orchestra in full swing is both them standing over the sight of victory, though it does not feel victorious for them, and it gives me the idea of that hero overlooking what is to come to them, the challenges they will face. This is one of my favourite pieces in Undertale. Most of the songs in it, while great, usually only give me a setting in my head. This is one of the few that puts a story in my head. With the true mystery of the quiet opening, to the eerie air. The build-up/middle part fills me with a hollowness of sorts, like something is missing. The grand orchestra feels so ancient, melancholy, and bigger than oneself. Like an unconquerable enemy or challenge. It sounds like a tragedy, yet you cannot figure out why it is one. Thank you Toby Fox for creating the music and this game.
This used to be my favorite song, but now I cant listen to it without crying. My best friend and I used to love everything undertale, AUs, role-playing, the whole thing. This song reminds of back then. We were so care free and happy then. She hates me now and I just don't feel like I have a reason to exist, or that I matter to anyone on this planet anymore.
I don't know why, but this ost makes me sad. I picture this ost being about someone losing a loved one. In certain parts of the ost, it sounds like someone is crying out for help or yelling in agony.

To the genocide runners this feels like you are on a quest to get out of the underground and get rid of anyone interfering.
Toby, you are someone I look up to
Either way you end up freeing them in the end, right?
Nah, not really. In the Genocide run you aren't freeing anyone because, you can't free dead people. And if you are saying that in the Genocide run you are freeing them by killing them, it's technically not true because Napstablook can't die. In the Neutral runs you keep them trapped.

I've never done the Genocide route before... but I did some research.
Reading the lore shit written on the walls about the souls combined with this music was genuinely unnerving tbh.

I can really see the thought and background put into this region. The thought of making stars out of rocks, wishing to once see real ones, the heroine who wants to not only get a human soul, but avenge those who have fallen under the character, not just themselves, but the whole underground. The echos of the previous ones who have gone there, the dreadful feeling you get from the desperation from the past, and maybe even the present.

have you ever stood at a height or near the edge of something like a cliff before and felt this quiet but distinct urge to throw yourself off of it for no logical reason? this is called the call of the void and it can occur in people for a number of reasons, but seems to be linked to a primal sense of curiosity and spite. you would never give into the feeling, but it still alarms you when you feel it because it makes you question your own sense of self preservation. this song makes me think of what it would feel like to just sit at the edge of a seemingly infinitely deep water fall and just contemplate "what if"

Hey, that's a good theory. :O
LunarTanaka Well, I mean, it's art - it's supposed to be interpreted. And, yeah, that seems like a perfectly valid interpretation, a child who wishes to know what a star is by asking questions that he can comprehend. But I prefer taking things to a metaphorical level, so I'm probably reading way too much into it, haha;;
Redz The Soulless Hater Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
maybe the part if you can eat it is talking about the monsters a hero can fight

Ironic how this song is actually a slowed down version of Spear of Justice, and Undyne's main goal is to fulfil the hopes and dreams of the monsters.
Or on a genocide the need to push through
Had to come back and remember this masterpiece, to cope with a little breakdown.
Monster Kid's Innocence and fun banter as we wander in this unknown area makes us less anxious about crossing such a dangerous path as Undyne's chasing us down
The various moments where light fades out and reappears, the spectacle of these beautiful stars makes my heart pound.

This song makes me depressed when ım fine

Waterfall, a themed filled with mystery, sadness, hope and despair. This theme was meant to reflect the attitudes of all monsters

I stopped walking around and even playing the game just to listen to this music. I love this piece. It's so strong, yet delicate. It was really send the message across on how badly the monsters want to be free.
This song has that feeling of something ancient, something very powerful going on. Beautiful.
"you are now listening a calming music.you are filled with DETERMIMATION"
((HUGS)) Losing a friend hurts so much. The friend who introduced me to Undertale doesn't speak to me anymore.
I just started playing Undertale and the music is heavenly
It's even worth playing it Only for the music.
You think it's heavenly? Welllllllllllp go throughout the game first
UndertaleFan :3 :O
Fun fact: in both this song and Undyne's theme you can hear the melody from the Ruins song.
I don't know why, but this ost makes me sad. I picture this ost being about someone losing a loved one. In certain parts of the ost, it sounds like someone is crying out for help or yelling in agony.
I need an hour version to fall asleep to.
