After rewatching these, it's great to look back at Osysa's line in episode two about how "It pains me to be apart for so long". So she told them the answer for this scene without telling them it was the answer. I love that kind of foreshadowing in this show!
And HA!! They could start "making their way" to Westruun! Remember that you said that! More foreshadowing that I'll explain next episode. 🙂

Scanlan has a Wisdom score of 7, the lowest of the whole party (Grog "boasts" the lowest Intelligence score).
Everyone being confused when Kamaljori dubbed him the wisest sage he's known is a joke referencing that.
Mythcarver's previous wielder was known as the White Duke.
For the music, Neal Acree writes the instrumental score and Sam Riegel and his brother in law Peter Habib collaborate on the Scanlan songs.
The confrontation with Kamaljiori was very different in the streamed campaign, where they had to figure out his name by completing several tricky and deadly puzzles.
The cast and writers initially tried to do a puzzle-oriented confrontation for the animation too, but wasn't able to make one that felt good, so they scrapped that idea and changed it. For the better I think. And yeah, Scanlan's power ballad is amazing. :)
The only thing I don't like is that Kamaljiroi was killed by Umbrasyl. I had hoped he would be reunited with Osysa after Certain Events happen.
It does make defeating the dragons even more personal though.
It also shows just how tough ancient dragons are. Both Kamaljiori and Grog put some damage into him and he was still fit for fight and not even seriously wounded.
In DnD, a gorgon is a blue, metal bull that breathes gas. Anyone toiching the gas turns to stone.
Im Greek mythology, the gorgons were Medusa and her two sisters.
Sphinxes live sort of outside of time, the male sphinx knew he'd die when they came, that's why Scanlan's song affected him so deeply. He knew he would never meet his mate again.
All cursed weapons are so very tempting to keep!
That Kam chose Scanlan over the vestige is heartbreaking, especially as no one else in the show has been 'allowed' to see Scanlan be sincere or heroic except him.
The term for the 'regular world' in the game is the Prime Material Plane.

Ancient dragons are incredibly powerful. Like just under Gods in the tier. Umbraysl’s nickname of The Hope Devourer is sort of a reference to how he likes to play with his food. Grog is demonstrating how that goes in this episode. You think you’re winning…until you’re not. And then you realize there was never any hope.
Bards can heal in dnd, but they’ve scaled down Scanlan in the show to keep from giving them too many narrative outs.
"how did he come up with this?" you should see the songs that Scanlan was able to improvise in the campaign. Literally improvised by Sam (his VA and player in the campaign), soooo many of them, so good so funny.
There's a Greatest Hits of Scanlan Shorthalt compilation video that contains all his improv bardic excellence if you want some campaign 1 nostalgia. My personal favorite was the Brittney Spears rendition versus the Pitfiend.

One of my favorite trivia bits: The voice actor for Kam the sphinx is the same actor that played El Jefe in the Three Amigos. The main guy under El Guapo that
didn't know what a plethora is lol.

Many reactors have suggested the "just get rid of it" angle, as a heads up as to why that isn't possible, in dnd part of the curse of a cursed weapon is NOT wanting to get rid of it.
Edit: Grog "looked" like he was doing well, but had no chance in that 1v1 against the dragon, the dragon was playing with him like a cat plays with a mouse.
Look back at when the dragon picks up scanlan, that "good hit" grog got on the neck looks like a shaving nick. The only thing grog was really showcasing in that fight was how durable he is...
I think Grog was actually doing ok, and putting some real hits on Umbrasyl, but once the dragons breath had a chance to recharge, he would have been toast, and the rest of the team just couldn't do anything.
@@bskec2177 Umbrasyl did use his Breath on Grog, if you look carefully when Grog charges Umbrasyl you see a stream of Acid, just miss Grog.
Whilst it hasnt always been 1:1 because of the different formats - this is where it starts to really split.
Sam Riegel (Scanaln) flexing that musical theatre background - this song is a serious highlight of the whole season... and as you're about to see, thats a high bar.
The original puzzle was more conventional and was super interesting for the players, but I dont think would have translated to screen well. This way they gave Scanlan a moment to truly shine ajd we get to see a different side of him.
Theybalso didnt get split in the game, the two things youte about to see hoppened at different times with the whole party. No spoilers, but i think the split works well and lets turm focus on individuals better and save some time.

Madison is so worried throughout the episode that it's contagious. I felt this anxiety too.
Scanlan's song and his friendship with Kamaljiori gets me every time, no matter how many times i watch this. And we've lost the Vestige and our magnificent sphinx, Scanlan lost his friend, and Osysa lost the love of her life. This is so sad. Who will tell her? :(((
You will like the next 2 episodes (i should say 'the whole season', but let's stop at next two), definitely. They are great.

The challenge was much more mundane than this, but any excuse for Sam to sing (an original song, instead of parodying licensed stuff). More importantly, Ripley never approached Umbrasyl, so he never tracked down VM, killed the sphinx, or disrupted the spell, splitting the party. It's a shame we'll never get to see the satyr's drawing of Grog... oh, he did skewer Pike at one point, though.
Ripley's partnership with Umbrasyl keeps her relevant until her big showdown in season 3, and I can't blame them. This was all far more dramatic than the original version.

Yeah man. Ancient dragons are some of the most powerful creatures in the game of D&D. Very dangerous even for high level parties.

I have heard they've released 2 albums, 1 per season, of all the music - including Scanlan.
Bards like Scanlan and Rangers like Vex can heal, bit they're not as good at it as Druids like Keyleth or Clerics like Pike.v
