I am a woman of a certain age who loves reading and lives in Kansas, USA (not mutually exclusive things). Recently discovered Books Unbound. I've been watching your old house channel for awhile, Ariel, and love the way you talk. Same cadence as my niece the librarian. Love the book info and the chemistry of female friendships on Books Unbound. Wanted to let you know, there's a good article about Charles Portis in The New Yorker magazine, April 17 2023 issue. I thought the casting in the first "True Grit" movie was horrible, but love the Coen bros. version. Also, may she rest in peace, my aunt knew Charles Portis because my uncle worked with him. Or, at least they were both working journalists in Little Rock. She mentioned Mr. Portis occasionally, but I don't remember anything she said about him except he was funny and she liked him. So there you go.
Hi team, So happy to listen/view your podcast:D You are that part of my Sunday that energizes me enough to have a better Monday :))) I was wondering whether it is me or something changed in the time you post on Sunday. As I am based in Spain, I used to listen to it on Sunday but in the last 2 times it was posted close to midnight or after midnight. Would be so amazing to have it a bit earlier! Thaaaaank you!
I read Red Rising just a couple of months ago. Imo the beginning of the book doesn't say much about what's going to happen. Darrow is not gonna be in those mines for much longer. But when looking at the whole triology, that beginning plays an important role, even if the action won't kick in until he leaves the mines.
I read The Long Walk, did not like the end. Had to read the last 2 pages again to be certain I had not missed something important. It’s as if the author was called by publisher when he had begun last chapter and was told to wrap it up to meet publishing deadline. Re-reading The Institute 👍.
