- At 2 inches, your SRM Flowerhorn enters a critical growth phase, requiring specialized care to support its rapid development, vibrant coloration, and kok (head) growth. Here’s how to ensure optimal care:
1. Tank Setup and Environment
• Tank Size: Upgrade to a 20-gallon tank, ensuring enough space for growth. Plan for larger tanks as it matures.
• Water Temperature: Maintain 82-86°F to enhance metabolism and activity.
• pH Level: Keep pH between 7.4-8.0 to suit its alkaline water preferences.
• TDS Level: Ensure TDS is around 150-250 ppm for healthy development.
• Substrate and Decor: Use smooth, large-grain substrate and minimal decorations to prevent injuries while providing swimming space.
2. Nutrition and Feeding
• Pellets: Offer high-quality Flowerhorn pellets rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
• Live/Frozen Food: Supplement with bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia once or twice a week.
• Feeding Schedule: Feed 2-3 times daily in small amounts that it can consume within 2-3 minutes.
3. Water Quality
• Filtration: Use a reliable filter with a gentle flow to keep water clean.
• Water Changes: Perform a 20-25% water change weekly to maintain low nitrate levels and stable conditions.
• Conditioner: Always treat tap water with a dechlorinator before adding it to the tank.
4. Lighting
• Use moderate lighting to enhance the fish’s natural coloration without causing stress. Avoid bright or sudden changes in lighting.
5. Kok Development and Interaction
• Place a small mirror for a few minutes daily to stimulate kok growth. This encourages activity and territorial behavior but shouldn’t be overused to prevent stress.
6. Health Monitoring
• Behavior: Watch for active swimming, healthy appetite, and vibrant colors as signs of good health.
• Signs of Stress: Faded color, clamped fins, or inactivity may indicate poor water conditions or stress.
Providing the right care at this stage ensures your Flowerhorn grows into a healthy, vibrant fish with a stunning kok and strong personality. Regular attention to its diet, water quality, and interaction will make a big difference.
