Great video Tim! Watched this video and the finished pond with the ducks. It’s hard to tell in the video, but curious how deep it is? 12-15 feet? I dug one at home that took me 80 hours in a 290 hitachi and we love it! Been thinking of making a before, during and after video
Looks great! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. My neighbor and I share a corner of our lots maybe 4X bigger then that that's marshy and I've brought up the idea that we should make it into a pond. The thing is; we have a lot of bedrock around. Might not be suitable for this. I guess we need to find our own expert.
That looks like a good job, thanks for taking the time to share your part of the world. I had a laugh at what you guys call a "drought" with all that green grass. As I write it's 48 degrees here in Australia ... that's 48 Celsius ( 118F), not too much grass to be found ;)
Very enjoyable video. We get lake effect from Lake Ontario so know about measuring in feet (20 minutes north of Syracuse). Another 30 minutes north they measured in yards (Redfield 319 inches so far this season)
Was the pond like 8ft deep? Looks like he dug a little bowl not a hole.... I watched a guy dig a football field sized 60 ft deep hole with an excavator. This seemed more like a video on how to grade land.
The pond is 15 feet deep. Deep enough so fish can survive in our harsh winters. He has put in many ponds and knows what he is doing.. He also did a beautiful job grading ... I hardly had any raking to do before throwing the grass seed down. Some times the perspective can give a deceiving look ....
Cutting hard virgin soil up hill is hard on the machine and not time efficient. Cut hard soil down to the bottom to a berm or pile. Then push the fluffed soil up the hill to build the Levi package it as you go. Cutting soil down hill uses the weight of the dozer enabling cutting more soil per push. Also burns less fuel because you’re not working the machine as hard. Basically work top to bottom , then push the fluffed spoil up the bank.
So when you dig and you see black soil that's no good right? You want to see the brown clay and then spread that brown clay and pack it down so it doesn't leak or should I say seep through something like that?
go for it if you want, the most basic tool for digging is a "Digging stick" and that loosens the earth, me and my dad intend to get some digging machines like that, but those can cost a few thousand, he brought someone in A man spent every day after his wife died digging through a mountian to make a road to the city that would have possibly saved her, and he successfully dug through the earth I was thinking about ponds like this, and having 1 near the home and another below it, and have a dam you can use for power, along with a fish ladder, and you can have a waterwheel for power too, and on the river you can have it flow and pipe back up with solar power, using the water as a battery just like Britain does , and there are fish safe ways to collect power- even if you dont eat the fish you can use them to feed your trees and garden-i was thinking putting in a fishing/astronomy house down on the river after its been run for a few months or planned and reinforced banks around it with stone sunk into the soil with a delta dug to feed the permaculture food forest
The pond has a good supply of spring water that feeds it. With moving water, it is not a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This is also an open area with few trees and there is almost always a breeze. This combination is not a good habitat for mosquitoes. No problem with mosquitoes
I wonder what beavers think about this? They are the real experts! I make beaver like wet spots. I just pile brush up at the lowest spots where water gets channeled by my hillside. I cover the brush with leaves, manure, sods and stones when I need a place to dump that kind of thing. Kind of like a dry land dam. I have been doing it here for 10 years and it really is keeping the water up on my hillside a whole lot longer after winter. I have no propper swimming ponds and only some standing water in spring but the soil here on my hillside is far more moist and fertile then it used to be! I learned from watching what beavers do. It also helps me know how to drain the land easily if I need to like on my driveway, just make a little creek off to the side to let the water out
Tim, thanks for uploading this video. I have a property in Allegany County, Belfast/Angelica area. I'm wondering, what town are you in? And what town is the operator that dug your pond in? I'm going to need a rather large pond, over an acre, dug out in 2-3 years.
