Really enjoyed the race series. It was interesting to see how the better riders let people pass as soon as possible and just played to their strengths. It seems the less experienced riders did more to "protect" their spot.
Depends on whats at stake i have found when you racing for the win there all arse holes to pass in aus anyway the slower guys are normally cool and when you passing lapped riders there really good at getting out of your way .
@@Yoda-em5mt The culture in the US has always stressed being friendly and helpful. It’s usually the noobs who get weird about being passed. Most people here realize that it’s a sport based on individual skill and strength and there’s no reason to try to block when it could garner a bad rep in the community and really won’t help in the end. And sometimes it’s just dumb. I was racing in Alaska many years ago in our Tuesday night race series (shorter races of only 1.5 hours on easier cross country ski trails) and one of the pro/expert riders was primarily a cross country skier, where blocking is encouraged. Three of us were in the lead and I went to pull through and he blocked me. The other guy went to pull through and he did it again. The other guy and I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders, and just sat on his wheel while he pushed air for us. He gave us a free ride to the finish. The guy was a strong athlete and a good rider, but his mindset came from skiing instead of cycling and he didn’t realize that we were getting a free draft. Sometimes blocking makes no sense whatsoever. It’s too bad racers in Australia are like that; they’re missing out on what makes mountain biking a great sport.
@@keirfarnum6811 yep aussies are special breed thats for sure . Way back when i used to speed skate ie roller skates at club racers and it was kinda weird with drafting and blocking . I don't race anymore still love riding but stay away from the mtb community i do wander if they get out of the way for Mackie because they know there being filmed and would look like a tosser if they block him in .
You guys really exemplify everything that makes MTB racing so awesome: the attitude that we’re all competing, but we’re really in this together and supporting each other. Makes me want to sign up for my next race!
Dad is amazing . I am 61 and consider myself no slouch but Syds dad would blow my doors off . Dang road climbers . That's where races are won in XC . You both are bombers on the tech and downhill . Fun to watch . Well done for where both of you are at in your fitness .
Watched all three stages... Man you guys have mad technical riding skills. Most of Moab is way too difficult for me to enjoy. Great video series. Cheers.
Syd you did so good For not riding in a long time. 10th overall you kick butt. Macky so fast and smooth love Watching you ride. You guys are sweet I enjoyed that thank you.
Had to go back and compare this series to your last just to see the progress you both have made and it is remarkable. Huge steps in fitness! Keep it up!
Thank you, you two.. although I had to cut all my Patrons, i dont feel left behind. I cant wait to see the next adventure. And Mr Shultz would be an awesome channel! ❤
Truly enjoyed watching this, thanks for sharing! Both of you did well and now will work on other aspects of your race....also loved seeing your Dad there and racing!
I caught up on days 1 and 2 just in time! :D Living on the east coast, watching how you handle all that rock is astonishing. Makes me want to get out and ride more.
This is actually interesting to watch and reminds me why I only raced two MTB races (for the Leadman series). Trying to get around people walking on the single track sections just isn't fun! Also, you are both so fast on the descents. fun to watch!
Awesome race videos again guys! Congrats on the awesome outcome of the weekend for both of you, being top 10 and smashing it without injurys reoccuring or crashing! I dont know if you got different cameras but the footage seemed smoother than usual, especially with it being rocky out there.
would you guys consider doing a review of your niner e bikes once you put panniers on them and did that vid of using it in place of driving, thx, have fun..
Great video with lots of help line-finding shots. One small suggestion: When you put your names on the screen, add a second line “blue bike” or “gray bike” or something similar. This might help us easily recognize which camera we’re watching during those handful of occasions with no commentary and your breathing is surprising similar. Just a suggestion
@@sydandmacky Good to hear. Remember that form the GoPro's viewpoint, it only sees your top bars. Those are different colors. Something else that might be useful with you videos would be your thoughts on the level of difficulty for the trails you ride and others in the same area. I am now retired and bike quite a bit before suspension systems, then came kids follow by a liver transplant. I now live not far from you (I think) just south of Santa Fe and am slowly trying to bike again. It would be fun to add some rides in areas that we visit. Take Care
I'd say it's more that I made sure to conserve some energy for the later parts of the race whereas they might have started off a bit too hard. And on the descents it's that I tend to out descend most XC racers because of my 6 years racing Enduro seriously.
Not sure if cover this yet but hydration packs for stage racing/Moab rocks? What about using them in general? I’m not a fan of them but all my enduro/casual rider friends love them
It's personal preference. We were fortunate to have someone to give us bottles at the aid station so we were able to get away without wearing them. Otherwise, we probably would have.
Ideally 20-30 minutes. Often it is a lot less 😆 for example on this day I realized my grip was slipping around two minutes into my warm up and by the time I fixed it it was time to go 😂
hmm...Syd Macky you ever think of riding downhill? you both seem to do better on the downhill portion? As would I . IM weak on hills. Off road and on road.lol....BUT you both seem to have good skills at just blasting down hills. maybe a thought?? Good job and good news is,..there is always the next race. Stay positive and keep safe!!
We raced Enduro pretty much exclusively from 2013-2018, but more we want to be able to race and do well at any MTB event that sounds cool, so we've been focusing on improving our fitness and climbing!
Don’t feel bad Syd. I got Shawl in 6 try’s. Also are you racing your new bike? Love you’re guys Chanel We just got back from Moab and it’s fun to see you guys riding all the same trails! Peace! Jt and Susan
This is why I can't think about these kinds of XC races. Cardio monsters with serviceable technical skills always place better than extremely skilled technical riders with good cardio (you have to be both to win, though). There are just far too many places to pass on double track road climbs vs the mostly single track descent sections where they can block people all day, even if not on purpose.
The guy that passed you so close saying like slow down. Was he trying to be funny ? And it seemed to me he alot of room not to have cut you off like that. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Great video and God bless
Syd: I have never done a Mass Start so my comment comes with limited background: I was frustrated on your behalf for the clogging! Macky: Slipped a cleat? It popped out? To the both of you: Congrats! What hard work it took to do what you do!
Yeah, it's easier on person and the courses are well marked. That being said, riding/racing in Moab takes some getting used to because you have to follow the lines painted on the slickrock.

Like that positive self talk Syd.
Awesome , strong final day and finish!
Superb racing, filming. I get a kick out of Jim Shultz and Geoff Kabush, both Ironmen.
I want to go to Moab so bad, for mtb and Jeepin. I think I'd be so enamored by the scenery that I wouldn't get much riding done.

That trail was so hard. I definitely felt the same way “why does it have to be so rocky?!” 😂
Amazing video, relaxing and inspiring haha and Im always impressed by Macky's technique, and Syd's power! Great race guys, congratulations!
Awesome riding. Well done to both of you👍
Such good video which is really about the riding.
Well done both of you, great series to watch as well!

We were thinking of getting different colored stem caps for this very reason 🤪 because our bikes our also the same color haha

How do I find that ( scratch) drink

Skratch labs active hydration in the bottle, skratch chews and bars in the pocket. We aren't huge fans of gels.
