As another old guy, this is exactly the kind of stuff that compels me to avoid using modern technology, because modern tech is garbage and the manufacturers of said garbage hate their customers
I think it will just take a while for people to migrate to that. The only thing that worries me is since SW has changed hands the quality control of what they are sending out (mainly the 55 point guitar/bass inspection) seems to be non existent. I have seen some awful mistakes being sent out from youtubers and a couple guitars I have received myself. I still love Sweetwater and still buy from them but lately yikes.
Guys, you can get a free account at almost any bank that you can use for this purpose. Married people: special announcement. This is another way to conceal buying and selling a bunch of awesome gear without “family members” finding out about it.
Amen, had the same experience with being paid out. I asked for a check too and wasn't able to get it. I had to sign up for PLAID or whatever it's called. I probably won't sell on there for same reason. I found it really fruttrating to have use their chat and not talk to someone on the phone (which could be resolved in a few minutes on a telephone call)
Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad i watched your vid because I was seriously thinking about selling an item on that platform. Have purchased from Reverb several times but never used them to sell an item.
Every single person has a phone…but none of these companies use them, it’s all email..I freakin never look at email…the system is designed to give you aggravation
I blame the music stores which is the ONLY reason i ever sold on ebay or reverb! IF the music stores would go back to taking in consignment or would offer better amounts on used gear we could just deal with our local Music store. Just think NO SHIPPING! NO GETTING LOST or DAMAGED IN SHIPPING! Etc,Etc! There were one or two times where i just decided to take the loss on because i did not want the hassle of Ebay or reverb and shipping! I just sold or traded the gear at Guitar center or Sam ash.
I stopped selling on Reverb when they started jacking up their prices to sellers. It got to be crazy expensive. I figure, if I'm going to pay that much to the seller platform, I might as well sell on consignment through my local music shop. At least the fee I pay goes to a mom and pop shop. It takes longer to sell but there's no shipping because it's selling locally.
Rather have my guitar in hand for continued playing than it sitting in some shop collecting dust and who knows what damage can come from people moving it around or playing it. No thanks.
It used to be great fun getting together with Your local Congressional Representative's Constituent Services. Some hard driving go-getter ready to blast some poor schmuck on your behalf, threatening Congressional Inquiries and Attorney General's Election-Year Crusades. Thanks Joe for the warning about Reverb . I previously have purchased several items with no problems and was considering using them to sell . I will avoid them like the Covid. Thanks again !!!
Holy Shit!!!! I am a guitarist. I constantly use the special effect "Reverb" on my guitar and vocals. I love it. Then I turned on this video that says I shouldn't use it....I was curious. But it's about the online swap market ( which I never have used or subscribed to) called Reverb. Whew!! Love ya Joe, keep up the good work. Btw, I still use eBay and Craigslist, I'm comfortable in that zone . No Facebook either.
A lot of businesses now don't want to talk to you over the phone even it's the best way to communicate. In fact they make it hard to get an agent on purpose. Sometimes you have to lie in why you are calling.
I just sold my last guitar on Reverb. Been using them for years, buying and selling, just for fun. Not trying to make money, just a hobby. The guitar I listed a couple of weeks ago sold, no issues with the transaction. Then I saw that I paid 58 bucks for the Reverb Bump - 4.5% of the sale in addition to the 5% fee. Only problem is, I did not choose that. I come to find out that they have the Bump as a default now, it used to be that you had to click the button to choose that. So they know there are unsuspecting sellers like me who don't pay attention and don't expect them to pull a fast one on the people keeping their site up and profitable. So, in short, fuck Reverb.
Thanks for the heads up. That’s perplexing to say the least. As a buyer, I can still easily use PayPal. No changes have been made there, as far as I can tell. (But I can only do it on my PC- doesn’t work on the app anymore.) Sounds like they’re maximizing profit at the expense of their customers, like so many other companies who only care about quarterly bottom lines, rather than other people and the health of their company a year down the road. Short-sided idiots.
I purchased a mountain dulcimer off Reverb, and when I received it it wasn't completely built! Had to dress, crown , file fret ends,etc.... plus the bridge broke trying to file it tried to reach out to Reverb and nothing!! Plus the seller just disappeared off the Reverb website and the dulcimer was not cheap!! And an older guy as well I'm done with that kind of BullS@#!! As well
Great example of a company that makes it uncomfortable and inconvenient to use their service only because its better for the company and to hell with the customers. No sellers = No Reverb.
I've always had good experiences selling guitars on eBay... for one thing, they take a lower cut if you are selling instruments (like 6% vs the standard 10 - 15%) And there was one time a guitar I sold got lost in the mail and eBay let me keep the full amount that was owed to me I prefer selling locally, but if you need to sell guitars online, eBay isn't a bad way to go
Thanks for letting us know, Joe. That is a load of crap, and for the birds! I will NEVER use Reverb to sell any of my gear. Not putting myself through that crap, and letting those crooks make money on my over-night funds. And you can't even speak with anyone that can make a decision? A supervisor? Nope. Not. Gunna. 2 things I have to say. The Email nonsense is the way thousands of companies communicate now. This is even done internally in companies also. It’s totally frustrating. How can a company prioritize the importance of a situation by an Email. Can you imagine having to send the 911 operator an email? Insane! Secondly the fact that the company wants to deposit it in your bank is because our government wants to keep track and Tax you on your money. Thank Sleepy Joe for that one. Great video, thanks for the information.
Sadly, services like this get too big to make it possible for proper communications with users. Selling locally is easier if you can find a buyer. But sometimes you can't. Plaid is a reputable service. If you're selling online a lot you could setup a separate bank account. Though not worth is for one off sales. These are deposits. They have no other privileges but always best to take precautions. I have gear I need to sell and have never tried Reverb. You gave me something to think about....
Thanks for this information, I was considering selling a really nice 10 top PRS Studio and trying out Reverb for the first time, not after seeing this! Reverb sounds like a total nightmare. The mere fact that they will only communicate through e-mails and require you to sign up for their pay service should be a red flag to everyone.
Man that sucks. Hope you get your money. Another bad story concerning Reverb. Have heard several bad stories over the last 6 months. I quit trading with them a while back, won't buy or sell there.
I agree with what you are saying. I was in the same situation but what I have done to get around it is to create a new bank account with a new bank unrelated to where I bank normally. In regards to ebay when they switched to managed payments it was the same kind of thing (not sure if they send out checks or any other methods) I remember being pretty mad about it. I liked the paypal dumps. This separate account idea was the only thing I could come up with.
Wow, that sucks. Only sold one thing there several years ago. It went ok, but these new changes sound horrible. Reverb is owned by Etsy now...which seems weird. I sell on ebay mainly...they want your bank info now too unfortunately. No more Paypal deposits.
Regarding the staff you are dealing with it’s very likely they don’t even speak English and they’re putting your comments into a translator, which is why it seems we are talking in circles with someone incredibly stupid. That’s been my experience anyway.

Thanks Joe, great info. That's a dishonest situation. Sounds like they're having serious cash flow problems. Hope you get your $ soon.I look at Reverb but have never used them. AFA ebay goes, I've never had a problem with them. You have to do your due diligence. I got my 2011 USA Hartford, CT Guild F-130CE new in box in a premium Guild hard shell case off of ebay for 1290 plus 55 ship. Either paid CC or Paypal, can't remember. One of the best guitars I own, wonderful neck, gorgeous full gloss body, wonderful sound, wonderful short scale playing dynamics. Won't sell it. You can't even find them used now. Between that and my Martin 00018E Retro short scale its almost a toss up (The 00018E Retro is almost the same guitar as the Clapton and Mayer models except their's are rosewood and mine is mahogany). Gotta say, the mahogany on my 00018E Retro is super gorgeous. I got mine new in box from a high school teacher in Tucson for 1700. It was a make up gift from his GF who cheated on him. He didn't want to make up and didn't want the guitar. Crazy situation, he was really hurt as I emailed a thank you and he said don't email me any more. Retail price at that time was like 2599. It tanked
10% fee on Reverb. That's robbery.
I’ve never had a problem buying or selling gear on reverb. But the fee increase is a big detriment nowadays. Plus I hate selling any gear.
What do mean sell gear? The Geetar Gorilla would not permit such a heinous act to occur without me taking some lumps over it.
Also, an old guy. I created a secondary account just for this reason. Only used for reverb deposits!
I may be forced to do that as well.
