It's so comforting having what's just about always been a bloke's domain hosted entirely by women. It just feels nice to have the world opened up more and I wish things were like this sooner.
I think it would be hilarious if Nikki did a test drive of one of the racecars, reviewing it as if it were just a normal Electrifying review: “There are no cupholders or frunk, but the naught to 60 is insane.” Also, “The range was very limited: we could only get around the city.”
Had a VW Egolf for 4 1/2 years in south 🏴 and averaged 4.4miles per kWh. Small battery, so nice and efficient and all trips were 30-50mph for the most part. Amazing car and great value - knew I wouldn’t be doing much motorway speeds so perfect at the time. Now in Tesla Model Y and after 2,800 miles average 236w so ~ 4.2miles per kWh in the last 3 months. Wouldn’t touch any EV with bad efficiency now. Never trusted the manufacturer ranges on EV or ICE and always used good reviewers (like you) and the EV database website for real world figures. Keep up the great work. Lots of Leaf cars? Barnards Bush! 😂
Hey Nikki, Steve Matchett used to color the F1 coverage with a tech segment where a team would explain anything about the car they felt comfortable discussing in a short segment. It was a fun way to expand everyone's knowledge about things like diffusers, fuel cells, and all the stuff hardcore racers understand but the public rarely does. It was short and sweet but made you come away feeling like you learned something. Apologies if you're already doing that.
Congratulations Nicki, I thought you might be up to something else as you were not with the Formula 1 Academy presentation team today. Oh and congratulations to Abbi for winning the championship. As always a great (over) 1/2 hour video but I'm not complaining. The EV range v efficiency discussion has been a moving target. Years ago with fewer charging points range was a priority, as time moved on with more EV's and more chargers availability and time to charge moved things. Different charger speeds along with home v public charge costs is also a factor. However as we know physics plays a part in efficiency, extra capacity = greater mass that not only effects efficiency but with higher mass causes extra stress on the rolling chassis including tyres, suspension and handling in poor weather conditions. Hopefully if/when the cost delta narrows between home and public charging and availability improves smaller capacity cars that focus on efficiency will become bigger sellers. We aren't there yet but hopefully we are on the way to getting there.
Winter EV efficiency vs economy. The wife drives a 73 Niro 4 + heat pump. Average summer efficiency 4.5 miles per kwh. However in the recent cold spell, this has dropped to 2.2 mpkwh. This 50% loss of efficiency would seem to be worrying, does it not? But, all is not as bad as it may first appear. She has a 10 mile round trip commute to work, and back. Across a city, with bumper to bumper traffic all the way. Average speed under 10mph. Using the car pre heat/defrost function via the app. along with lights, wipers, and heating all adding to the drain on the battery. Even with max regen. she doesn't get fast enough for it to be of much benefit to her. So pretty much the worst case scenario for efficient driving of an EV. This figure of 2.2 was jokingly mentioned in the pub. Where it was jumped upon with much glee, and gusto by a few anti EV sceptics in our company. "You've lost half your range, we told you EVs are rubbish" etc. etc. Oh, how they laughed. Economy. When asked what mpg they were getting on average, the replies were 30-40 ish mpg depending upon driving. Time for some maths. We are lucky to be able to charge from home, and have a cheap rate electricity tariff. So, with us paying roughly 8p per KWH and averaging 2.2 miles for said 8p. Against an average cost of £6.20 per gallon of petrol, we were getting the equivalent of approx. 170mpg. As a worse case scenario. The smile upon the sceptics faces was removed with mathematical facts. Although their overall thinking still had a ways to go. Efficiency and economy. Often used in conjuncture with each other but, often mis-understood. .
Another factor here is that if you quote say 2.2 an EV disliker would believe that to be for the entirety of a long jouney. However, last weekend driving to Wells from London, with long stretches at 60 to 65 mph, the overall efficiency for the jouney was around 3.7k kWh. If I was to get up in the morning at the moment and do only a couple of miles even at 20 to 30 mph, it would only be 2.2sh . This being due to the battery not getting warmed up. You only get to know all theses variations and nuances once you have one. Anti EV'rs will just dismiss that as too much faff and complications to deal with, whereas in reality it just becomes like 'mental muscle memory'.
@@paulbuckingham15 Yes. On a run in the same weather conditions, we would of got mid to high 3s. As I was trying to point out though, even when an EV is not being efficient, it can still be very economical.
Could you add an efficiency converter to the website to help people? Over almost three years and 20,000 miles I'm averaging 4.4 miles per kWh. I think governments will have to start mandating fleet average efficiency with staged increases of 0.2 every couple of years.
I do reckon miles per kW winter Vs summer is a better stated figure as it's a single digit that will let people easily compare one car to another and electrics super easy miles per kW multiplied by battery size there's your range plus lets the user work out so no manufacturer lying and if you want to check the miles per kW claim, check the dash of the test car simples.
I found it a bit conservative in its estimate for my EV. A 72 plate long range ZSEV. But I think that would give you confidence it would get at least what is quoted in the EV database, so if say its winter range was good enough for you, then get that model.
Enough! Enough!! Guys, can we please have a moratorium on any further chat about Jaguar for a while - preferably until we can actually see a (pre-)production version, assuming we even get that far!
I would suggest " A sweep of Leafs " as a collective noun (?) for a group of Nissans, or perhaps " A shrubbery of Leafs" for Monty Python fans. Thanks for the podcast.
Hello electrifying team, we discussed a couple weeks ago the prospect of my dad replacing his Skoda Karoq choosing between the Skoda Enyaq and Renault scenic, despite on the surface, the Scenic seems much better value, he decided to go for the Enyaq in the end, he went for a smaller battery (50 edition), but is paying £520 per month with a £2.5k deposit over 4 years. I think this is a really poor deal and have urged him many times to look elsewhere but he won’t budge, he has a really good relationship with the dealer and they are claiming to give him really good discounts and offers even though they aren’t. Even though it’s not the best deal, at least he’s made the jump to electric and he’s getting a free charger so that should soften the blow. Thank you for all your help.
The Jaguar issue is that at every other car show/launch the concept car is next to at least one car that is for sale for the brand so you can see the evolution etc. In this case all cars have been removed from sale! Of course the inside and doors of concept cars can be ignored. In this case the huge bonnet will surely make for a frunk big enough to sleep in!
I actually thing a frunk only car would be an interesting form factor given we can now do that with electrics. But I'm confident an electric e-type would sell better than anything based on this concept. Just as confident I am that this concept will be about as relevant to their eventual product as London catwalk fashion is to what you see in Next.
An EV's efficiency is so good, and the battery in energy terms is so low, that even small changes in energy consumption, makes a large difference to total range. An ICE vehicle will suffice range reduction in winter too, but as an engine is so inefficient, but as there's so much energy available in a tank of fuel, the ICE vehicle doesn't really notice a large reduction in range. There are many factors that effect EV range, like the temperature of the battery, which when cold suffers energy loss. This isn't actually a loss as such, more that all the energy isn't available until the battery has warmed up. Also lots of short trips effect range, as the cabin needs to be warmed up every drive. A long drive on the other hand only needs to maintain the cabin temperature, once the initial warm up cycle is complete. Driving on wet roads increases energy consumption, as the water under the tyres needs to be moved out the way, and water is heavy stuff, particularly the quantities that need moving over a long journey. Rapidly accelerating away uses a great deal more energy than pulling away slowly, so try accelerate no faster than an ICE car to save energy. Keeping the cabin temp at a sensible level also saves energy. Of course if you're lucky enough to have a cheap home charging rate, a bit of extra energy consumption over the winter isn't really an issue.
Finally, in keeping with the chat today, I really, really hope Renault finds success with their EVs since they are properly focused on efficiency by making vehicles as light as possible to achieve better range rather than stuffing a massive battery in, using materials and manufacturers from Europe so far as they possibly can and having production between 3 factories in France that sit in close proximity to limit distance of their supply chain. For a brand who has won so many accolades this year they are often overlooked in favour of other bigger more expensive vehicles that don't prioritise efficiency and reduction of materials in production
Good point Vicky said about harsh rides and delivery tyre pressures. I took delivery of a new Ioniq 5 and thought it was bumpy. looking into the tyre pressure monitoring it said mine were all at 46psi. Book states 36psi all round. Rob
Drum roll for the VW ID7 (witing for my Tourer to be delivered in the spring). I loved the Enyaq but just found the ID7 to be more refined, not an SUV, excellent equipment levels and a bit more comfortable.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. That jaGuar concept car looks like what you’d get if Lady Penelope and Cruella DeVille collaborated on an XJS restomod.
As usual, an enjoyable video. On the forbidden topic of 'Jaguar', forget about the concept car, difficult I know, I find it hard to work out how a company can stop producing and selling whatever product they make for a year and still be viable? The financing that Jaguar / Geely must have put in place is impressive, along with the confidence they must have that future products will be desirable and fly off the shelf?
Tesla model X bought at the start of Covid also had free charging for life (for the original owner owner only and not transferable). I now have a Merc GLC 300e (PHEV) which this summer often managed 80 miles on electric but only 60 now during the cold weather! But surprisingly on a recent trip from Southampton to Sheffield it managed 42 MPG on the return run starting off with no charge and with 4 up + week end luggage! Not bad for a 2.0 petrol SUV 😊
Tesla ceased free supercharging in January 2017, so in theory there aren’t any model 3s with free supercharging as the first cars were delivered in July 2017 (2019 for RHD cars). The reason I say it is in theory is there may be a very small number of model 3 and Y cars where free supercharging was allowed to transfer to a new car as part of a promotion or was offered as a federal bonus. Even if this perk exists on a model 3 or Y, unfortunately it isn’t transferable to a new owner.

Jag’s concept - designers’ been watching too many reruns of the intro of 2001: A Space Odyssey and have taken the ending to heart. You can choose any car but this one. Attempt no buying here.
If the Alpine A110 does end up being lighter than the petrol equivalent and also still has decent range it's a huge step forward. I remember the thing I disliked most about the Zoe I used to have was it's mass. It had a strange bouncy ride on undulating roads and the ABS would come on in the wet far too easily and even then it wouldn't slow particularly impressively.
Request for Nikki. Can we have a Podcast giving a run down of Formula e. I watched some of the first two season races, when the drivers had to come into the pits at the halfway stage to change cars, but I totally lost touch when coverage ceased on terrestrial TV. What are the rules now? Is there better opportunities to overtake? Are the circuits wider? I always thought it was a bit of a procession before. Is the series attracting new young talent as initially it seemed to be the series for failed and retired F1 drivers. What does Formula e offer to F1 followers? Thanks
Another great podcast episode Electrifying team, really can't wait to see production Alpine A110 EV ❤❤. Any new updates on when Porsche 718 Cayman EV is coming, and when are you test driving Doge Charger Daytona EV 😂?
The obvious 550l car under 50k over 250m would be the model Y. I assume that would not be comfy enough for the viewer, maybe next year's model? The 98kwh Grandland would do the job when it is available. There are a couple of Chinese cars on the way too, G6 or 7X but I think the latter will be too expensive.
I think the Formula E cars should include the immersive sounds, BMW’s Hans Zimmer etc. perhaps with the entire grid with could get a fully composition going. There could even be a composers title on the line. 😂
Also, Nissan "Leafs" would be most grammatically correct since brand names more often retain their original form in plural and the word Leaf in this case is the brand name of the Nissan vehicle ❤
On the subject of efficiency, EV's should be obliged to say range figures for urban and extra urban ranges. You get it when you buy ICE cars, why not EV's.
The answer is Leaf's, but that's from someone who only got a 'O' level English language so I'm open to correction. On the other subject, well done Ginny great improvement, I can see you where trying, I'm always here to act as your style guru. 😜 p.s. Why can I hear swearing.
Not sure why the guy with the iPace is worried as he got it on a PCP. Must have been happy with the payments when he took it on so just pay it off. Then if he does want one buy one or that one and take the cheap cost. Its the leasing company that has taken the huge hit. No one could predict that Jaguar would just leave the iPace to fester and then bin it. World leading to zero in 3 years, brilliant management. I nearly went that route too but did not in the end. Phew. The car still looks brilliant.
He was likely hoping for equity to put into the next purchase. Whilst this can happen, the PCP is really a hedge against depreciation ( for you ) not going above a maximum pre determined amount.
ICE cars are the ones that will depreciate the most .... Also ICE are affected by cold weather sometimes just as much percentage.. Heatpumps in BEV really does help efficiency :) ICE cars never get WLTP either... :)
On the subject of Leaf vs. Leaves, apparently LEAF is a backronym for Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family car. I feel like the plural should be LEAFs. Now, what's the collective noun?
Perhaps tax car, should become inefficiency tax. Every car can report mileage driven and kWh received. Have a car running at the unicorn level of 8 miles per Kilowatt hour, you pay zero tax and that bands ramp up so cars running below 2 are paying top rate.
If Jag were rebranding and going pink they should do a model called the Pink Panther and rebrand properly - that'd be worth owning. Or at least call it the Penelope.
Nope they were warned a decade ago and people could see it coming with China who have learned fast and improved in battery tech beyond with at was expected by 2024 never mind the new packs out 2025-26, Hyundai, Tesla. They sat back in Europe and like giant tankers failed to change direction. They went into panic mode a few years back and paying the price. Renault has shown you can make interesting retro small electric hatches that will sell like hot cakes. MINI making its Eva models hatch in Oxford welcome. The Car market in general has taken a dump as it was in a Covid bubble. People owned EV’s from new did twenty k miles on them and sold then two year old for more than they paid.

5 degrees - urban and extra urban

LEAFs. LEAF stands for Leading Enviromentally-friendly Affordable Family vehicle, so the acronym doesn't change.
Formula E is going to have a perception problem until they start racing on some proper race courses.
Nissan Leafs I'd say. Technically Leaf is a model name rather than a noun pertaining to things on trees.
First car I thought of when I saw the Puma was the bug eye sprite, a few little changes and Ford could have quite a sporty number
Ioniq 5 great ride great boot and great car :) Get on 19 inch wheels :) NIce and comfy :)
Plural of Leaf is Leafs as it is a brand name.
On the subject of efficiency, EV's should be obliged to say range figures for urban and extra urban ranges. You get it when you buy ICE cars, why not EV's.
And why not the real range and not this wltp rubbish.
The answer is Leaf's, but that's from someone who only got a 'O' level English language so I'm open to correction.
On the other subject, well done Ginny great improvement, I can see you where trying, I'm always here to act as your style guru. 😜
A quick Google check says that The Oxford English dictionary and Merriam-Webster's dictionary say it's leaves
I used to love the EV motorcycles blasting around the Isle of Man TT course. Then they stopped it because everyone thought it was shit.e.
Ginny , what Nefflix Documentary?
And what difference does a heat pump make?
On the subject of Leaf vs. Leaves, apparently LEAF is a backronym for Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family car. I feel like the plural should be LEAFs. Now, what's the collective noun?
Perhaps tax car, should become inefficiency tax. Every car can report mileage driven and kWh received. Have a car running at the unicorn level of 8 miles per Kilowatt hour, you pay zero tax and that bands ramp up so cars running below 2 are paying top rate.
Just a warning: `Car Knowledge` can be misconstrued as `Carnal Edge`... I had to listen back twice to `unnerstand` what you women were saying..!
Formula e - that's Scalectrix right? The cars going round and round with no soul, noise or passion?
Wasn't LEAF supposed to be an acronym (or backronym)? If so then I'd think it's LEAFs. As for the collective noun - a rapidgate of LEAFs?!
Re: “Leaf” collective nouns. Might I suggest, for the secondhand market at least, “a mulch of old leaves”.
09:30 they stop talking about Formula E and start talking about Jaguar. You're welcome.
If Jag were rebranding and going pink they should do a model called the Pink Panther and rebrand properly - that'd be worth owning. Or at least call it the Penelope.
It’s “Leafs” because it’s a name and the usual grammatical rules don’t apply
A foliage of Nissan Leaves.
Leafs, as it is name not a definition.
E.U. destroyed European car makers.
ROFLMFAO

Thanks for this Richard. Leave it with me! Would love to do this.
